Recently, five lucky Malaysians had won the grand prizes of the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup promotional contest held on the 31st of May to 30th July 2015. The lucky five won an all-expense paid trip to Zhuhai, China to catch the fourth round of the 2015 Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup (SAATC) motorcycle racing championsion which was held recently. I suppose you can consider them the extra support or cheerleaders for the seven Malaysian riders competing in that round. 

A week after the Grand Prize winners had enjoyed their trip to China, Consolation prize winners were treated to a fun day out on the tracks at the Elite PLUS Speedway Go-Kart Track at Shah Alam.  They were given an opportunity to go on laps on the 150cc MiniGP bikes (which  look absolutely tiny on some of the prize winners) or go-karts, compliments of Shell Advance.  Some of the Malaysian riders taking part in the 2015 SAATC also came for a meet-and-greet session and to train at the track.

Kuala Lumpur, October 2, 2015 – Five lucky Malaysians had the opportunity to catch the best young Asian riders in action at the fourth round of the 2015 Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup (SAATC) motorcycle racing championship in Zhuhai International Circuit, China, recently.

The five were Annuar bin Chik, 49, from Selangor; Khoo Hong Lee, 59, from Johor; Ng Hock Yong, 44, from Johor; Ng Sow Keng, 54, from Selangor; and Rusainy Zaman bin Jusoh, 41, from Pulau Pinang. As Grand Prize winners of the 2015 SAATC promotion held from 1st May till 30th July, 2015, they had received an all-expense paid trip to Zhuhai to lend support to the seven Malaysian riders competing in that round.

Nineteen year-old rider Adam Norrodin gave hope for a Team Malaysia victory with pole position during qualifying for Race 1 but a mistake in the actual race meant that it was not to be.  In Race 2, he again performed strongly and was in second position for much of the race only to finish fourth in the end.  Sixteen year-old Helmi Azman was the next best performer with 8th placing in both races followed by lanky Fakhrusy Rostam who was placed 10th.  Shafiq Rasol and Azroy Anuar had missed fortunes when both crashed in the first race although the latter performed credibly by finishing in 9th place in Race 2.

A week after the Grand Prize winners had enjoyed their trip to China, Consolation prize winners were treated to a fun day out on the tracks at the Elite PLUS Speedway Go-Kart Track at Shah Alam.  They were given an opportunity to go on laps on MiniGP bikes or go-karts, compliments of Shell Advance.  Some of the Malaysian riders taking part in the 2015 SAATC also came for a meet-and-greet session and to train at the track.

Shell Lubricants General Manager Leslie Ng, said that the consumer contest further strengthened the brand’s association with motorsports.

“Our aim is to help bikers enjoy every ride by experiencing more power and a smoother ride every time with our Shell Advance range of motorcycle lubricants.  The trip to Zhuhai and the track day at Elite Speedway also provided an immersive experience of the exciting world of motorsports to our loyal customers,” he said.

Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore - Champions crowned.


Yesterday, on the 1st of October 2015, a total of 16 finalists from the bus and truck category competed in what Scania believes to be the toughest practical finals that they have organised to date in the Scania Driver Competitions. Eight truck and eight bus drivers duked it out against each other in their respective categories in the Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore and as in any competition, there can be only one winner (for each category of course).


Mr. Saiful Nizam Abd Aziz of Bank Simpanan Nasional was the champion in the bus category whilst Mr. Abdul Aziz Amir of Shaziman Transport Sdn Bhd was crowned champion in the truck category. Each champion took home RM10,000 in cash, a championship trophy and a certificate of achievement. The companies they represented were awarded a RM5,000 worth Scania service voucher. 


In order to win, both Saiful Nizam (pictured above holding his trophy) and Abdul Aziz (pictured below) and the other finalists were shortlisted from a total of 1,005 participants during an initial theory submission stage with participants coming from both Malaysian and Singapore. The participation numbers were up by 50%. This meant that there are more commercial drivers aware of such competitions that ultimately equip them with experience, knowledge and a chance to test themselves with each other. In fact, there was a finalist in the bus category, Mr.Mohd Ridzuan Abdul Rahman who entered this competition on his own initiative (which includes time away from work and also money to attend the event). It shows the professionalism and dedication of the people who are actually the backbone of the regional road transport industry.


The Scania Driver Competitions 2014/2015 Malaysia-Singapore finals were held over two days over at the Sepang International Circuit, drivers at the finals had to go through the fuel economy driving test and the defensive driving test on the first day of the finals. The second and final day, they had to go through the 'Knock-the-cone-and-head precision test (where the drivers have to drive and actually touch the cone/head without making it topple over within a specific time) and the 'Boardwalk' obstacle test (reverse slalom through a few cones then reverse whilst ensuring the truck or bus' tyres hit three planks laid out behind the trucks which were staggered to one side one after the other squarely. It was tough, but these finalists are built of tougher material.

Now an event like this would not have been possible with good partnerships and sponsors. Tyre company Michelin Malaysia was the main sponsors and such a driver competition was a great way for Michelin to showcase the capabilities of their tyres in terms of the important stuff like safety, comfort, longevity and fuel economy.

2016 Mitsubishi Lancer - This is still it....


This, is the 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer. Details of it has just been released for all to see. 

It is basically the same car we first saw in 2007. It is a facelift. In fact it is the first real facelift since the car first came out in 2007. The one they had a few years ago was some bits here and there with the same bumpers and stuff. This one you get a new front bumper with integrated DRLs (more than previously) on the outside and inside you get a very, very, very, very, oh you get my point slightly redesigned center console with an upgraded infotainment system. The rear of the car seems to have remained the same...bumper and all.




The changes inside are so miniscule that I had to stare at the pics of the dashboard before and after the change. It is only underneath that all new Lancer models get the full chassis safety package - Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control Logic (TCL), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), a seven air bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS),



Anyway, this car is soldiering on to at least 2018 with high performance Lancer Evolution X and the Ralliart versions dropped by 2016 (the Evo X is on its swan song wherever its sold). So what you see may be what we will get in the very near future if and when Mitsubishi Malaysia brings it in. I suppose you already know that Mitsubishi has changed its focus to its pickups, SUVs and electric vehicles instead of normal passenger cars. This is why the Lancer has stayed in production for a period longer than most Japanese manufacturers usually keep their models in production.

I'm sorry folks, you basically get a new front bumper, a new radio, some painted trim in the middle of the front dashboard and tons of safety features as standard but its basically the same car. This is the best Mitsu can do for now. Not that its a bad thing. It is a nice looking car in the first place and its styling does not seem that dated even today. Don't know about 2018 though.

Hyundai Tucson and Sonata Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards


In one of the American automotive industry’s most rigorous tests of vehicle safety, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson and 2016 Hyundai Sonata earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. This is the first time Tucson, which received a significant redesign for the 2016 model year, has received the highest honor from IIHS.



We currently get the Hyundai Sonata 2.0 and that is a mighty fine car to drive. It has been winning awards over in America and there is no doubt that it is a good D segment car for most of us to own. As for the all-new Tucson, I actually can't wait for it to reach Malaysian shores. The overall styling of the new Tucson apes its larger sibling, the Santa Fe. That is a well proportioned SUV. So this slightly smaller SUV now gets the same styling cues which I like. I dig those muscular wheel arches. If this new third generation Hyundai Tucson drives as well as the current crop of Hyundais sold here, then it will be something to look forward to.

-First time Tucson receiving the highest honor from IIHS

October 1, 2015 - In one of the industry’s most rigorous tests of vehicle safety, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson and 2016 Sonata earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. This is the first time Tucson, which received a significant redesign for the 2016 model year, has received the highest honor from IIHS.

IIHS rates vehicles for occupant protection based on performance in five tests: moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. Winners of the 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test. Vehicles also need an available front crash prevention system with an advanced or superior rating.

"Hyundai's redesign of the Tucson earns the 2016 model our top rating in the small overlap front test, and the Sonata retains its acceptable rating," said David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer. "Both vehicles have an available front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating in the IIHS autobrake test, a key criteria to qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award."

“Hyundai’s commitment to occupant safety is paramount throughout our entire lineup,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “We strive to develop technologies that assist in avoiding crashes all together, like forward collision warning, lane departure warning and emergency brake assist, and are pleased the Tucson and Sonata have received these awards related to occupant protection when collisions do occur.”

Multiple advanced safety technology options are available on the 2016 Tucson, including AEB with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Backup Warning Sensors and a standard rearview camera. In addition, advanced high-strength steel represents over 50 percent of the new Tucson’s structure, for enhanced crash safety. The vehicle also features a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that alerts drivers if one or more tires are under-inflated, including the tire’s location.

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Sonata lineup includes Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control System, seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, four-wheel disc brakes and ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with indicators for each tire. Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Smart Cruise Control with spot/start capability, Rear Parking Sensors, Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) are available as options.
