All New Hyundai Tucson officially launched

Hyundai Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has officially launched the all-new Hyundai Tucson here at Hyundai Motor Company's (HMC) brand new Asia Pacific Training Academy in Petaling Jaya today. The third generation Tucson was developed from the ground up as an urban SUV with an emphasis on ensuring affordability and drivability. Hyundai Motor’s latest design philosophy, the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 was employed as the guideline for both the interior and exterior design. So the Tucson looks like a shortened, slightly smaller Santa Fe. This is a good thing as the Santa Fe is one of the nicer looking affordable SUVs on sale in Malaysia today.

This locally assembled C segment -SUV is currently only available in a 2WD. So its actually all 'wayang' or all show with its SUV body and looks. Of course, being an urban SUV, All-wheel drive would actually never be used by 99% of the buyers out there.

It comes with the Nu 2.0 MPI engine with 155 ps and 192 Nm torque sent through the front wheels via a 6 speed automatic gearbox .This engine has to lug 1,435kg which is actually quite light for a C segment SUV. It has a low drag coefficient of 0.33. Good for a SUV.

Customers of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson will have two variants to select from - the Elegance and the Executive. The Elegance retails at an introductory price of RM125,311.51 while the Executive variant retails at an introductory price of RM138,925.68. Price indicated is inclusive of GST but excludes registration fee, road tax, insurance and hire purchase ownership claim fees (only applicable in Peninsular Malaysia). According to HSDM, pricing for both the variants will increase by RM3,000 starting January 2016. Added buyer's incentives would be HSDM also offering 50,000km free service with a validity of 3 years with every purchase of the new Tucson, which is equivalent to 6 times of free service.

This Tucson is so much better looking than the peanut shaped Tucson. That car was very feminine in terms of styling. It was all curves and gentle corners. This one is edgy and somehow more manly. The interior seems to have gotten better plastics and the layout looks slightly better. The earlier cabin wasn't that bad in the first place so Hyundai has taken in a step further. Equipment wise and the way the interior is presented isn't an issue with me. I actually think this new one looks better than the old one and that is the biggest change that is worth telling you guys about this all-new Tucson. Those looking at Honda CRVs, HRVs or the Mazda CX-5 now have another good looking option to choose with this new Hyundai model.

ALL-NEW BOLD AND SPORTY TUCSON MAKES ITS ENTRY
Third generation Tucson Carries on the Legacy of the Tucson

PETALING JAYA, 12 November 2015 – The All-New Tucson, which has just been launched, is expected to excite the market with its impressive new design that blends sportiness and refinement.

Since the launch of the first generation model, the Tucson has made an impression and has a strong reputation worldwide. The third generation Tucson will carry on the legacy of its predecessors but with a huge leap forward to deliver even greater customer satisfaction to meet the ever-growing customer expectations.

The third generation Tucson was developed from the ground up as an urban SUV - a fundamental shift while striving to maintain Tucson’s strong reputation and high quality. Emphasis was placed on ensuring affordability and drivability for compact SUV drivers. Hyundai Motor’s new design philosophy of Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 was employed as the guideline for both the interior and exterior design of this Tucson, giving it a distinctive Hyundai Motor family look.

Mr Lau Yit Mun, the Managing Director of Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) expects the all-new Tucson to boost Hyundai’s sales in Malaysia with its new sporty bold design, upgraded features and a growing demand for SUVs in Malaysia.

“Hyundai’s innovative design has never failed to impress car enthusiasts. The launch of the all-new Tucson demonstrates Hyundai’s design and technological capabilities in producing yet another game-changing product.” said Mr Lau.

This locally assembled C-SUV Tucson is currently only available in a 2WD Nu 2.0 MPI engine with two variants to select from - the Elegance and the Executive. To top it off, HSDM is also offering 50,000km free service with a validity of 3 years with every purchase of the new Tucson, which is equivalent to 6 times of free service.

SUV enthusiasts can expect more Tucson variants next year as HSDM is currently studying the market to offer more options to suit various customers’ needs.

In line with Hyundai’s “Modern premium” brand direction, HSDM is providing new values and experiences to customers through ways that are unique to the brand, going beyond customers’ expectations with reasonable pricing, among others. Customers can choose from seven appealing exterior colours which include Pure White, Platinum Silver, Pepper Grey, Sepia Topaz, Ara Blue, Ruby Wine and Phantom Black, and three leather packages namely Black, Red and White. These interior options are normally offered by luxury carmakers but HSDM is making them available for its customers as well.

HOW BOLD IS THIS NEW TUCSON?

BOLD AND SPORTY YET REFINED

Designed based on Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design theme, the Tucson employs refined aesthetics with sculpted body forms and sporty contours for an athletic, bold and striking appearance. The front of the All-New Tucson is dominated by the Hyundai signature hexagonal front grille, which connects to the headlamps with LED Positioning Lamps to create a distinctive identity. A wing-shaped appearance to the front bumper, which incorporates the LED daytime running lights, gives the car a unique style and provides a visual reference for the car’s wide track.

By moving the A-pillar back, it becomes visually disconnected from the long bonnet, accentuating the sleek profile. The directional shape of the wheel arches contributes to the agile and dynamic appearance, even at standstill. The expressive ‘Z’ character-line above the rear wheel arches creates a sculptural side profile and a powerful stance. The rear has a clean design with horizontal lines that flow from the rear wheel arches and accented by slim taillights giving it a refined sophisticated look. The rear angle also conveys stability and a wide, sporty stance, for agility both on and off-road.

Finally, a bevel-cut chrome exhaust tip and a standard rear spoiler adds even more sporty cues from the rear view.

ELEGANCE + ERGONOMICS FOR A COMFORTABLE RIDE
On the inside, a premium wrapped instrument panel will be offered, with extra-wide instrument panel contours to enhance occupants’ overall sense of interior roominess. A stitched, soft-touch pad is located near the driver’s right knee, for better comfort during long commutes or spirited cornering. Interior touch points have been upgraded with premium, soft-touch materials and all interior switchgear have a more refined feel during operation.

The all-new Tucson is longer (+3.0 inch), wider (+1.1 inch) and has a longer wheelbase (+1.2 inch) than the previous model for greater interior volume and versatility. Overall, cargo room has been increased to 31.0 cubic feet (from 25.7), up more than five cubic feet over the previous model. The rear lift gate opening has been enlarged in every dimension, for greater cargo flexibility. The 60/40 rear seatbacks have a greater range of adjustable recline for varying combinations of passengers and cargo, with an increased available recline of 37 degrees compared with 28 degrees for the previous model.

POWERFUL AND EFFICIENT POWERTRAINS

The Tucson maintains the Nu 2.0 MPi engine with a direct-injected four-cylinder powerplant that produces 155 ps and 192 Nm torque. With a body weight of 1,435kg, the Tucson delivers the best power to weight ratio in its class. Coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission that offers SHIFTRONIC™ manual shifting mode as well as an overdrive lock-up torque converter, higher fuel economy at highway speeds can be achieved.

REFINED, RESPONSIVE CHASSIS

The entire Tucson chassis is more rigid, now using more than 50 percent Advanced High Strength steel compared with 18 percent for the former model. The new Tucson also benefits from strategic use of structural adhesives at higher stress points on the chassis and more extensive use of hot-stamping methods for greater rigidity. The structure also uses four-point bushing mounts for improved comfort and reduced road noise.

The Tucson suspension has been enhanced for more precise handling without sacrificing ride comfort. The front suspension is a MacPherson strut design, with coil springs, gas-filled shock absorbers and a 24.7 mm stabiliser bar. The rear suspension is an independent, multi-link design, now with dual lower arms for optimal ride comfort and body control. Overall, front and rear suspension setups are now 20 percent stiffer than the outgoing Tucson’s.

Rear suspension control arms have been lengthened to minimise camber and toe changes throughout the suspension travel range, which has been increased to better absorb larger impacts. In addition, the jounce bumpers now use a more sophisticated, hydraulic-type design, for more refined responses over larger road impacts. Suspension bushings are now composed of a higher-dampening synthetic rubber that is 30 percent stiffer for smoother ride characteristics when compared with conventional rubber.

The Tucson also offers a choice of three Drive Mode selections i.e normal, sports and eco to match the drivers’ mood and driving conditions.

LOWER NVH, BETTER AERODYNAMICS

To improve NVH characteristics, the all-new Tucson has applied a number of sound dampening and insulation measures, such as:
  • Engine mounts have been enlarged to better absorb engine vibrations.
  • Rear cross-members have changed from a direct-mount design to a bushing-mount design.
  • Sound insulation materials have been added to inner fenders, underbody, instrument panel, transmission tunnel and all cabin pillars.
  • Using 335 feet of structural adhesive to insulate against road noise, where the previous model used none.
  • Door latch mechanisms were extensively refined, with lower noise, pull resistance, internal friction and great closure damping.
  • To lower wind noise in the cabin, aerodynamics have been improved to 0.33 Cd, a 0.02 lower coefficient of drag (Cd) than the former model.

Tucson’s lower coefficient of drag was achieved through a special aerodynamic design focus on the A-pillar design, rear spoiler side trim and underbody panels, all of which reduce air vortex and resulting aerodynamic drag.

IMPROVED STEERING FEEL

In addition, the steering wheel’s spoke is reshaped with a cross-cut view (an irregular shape) and the diameter is reduced by 10mm to improve handling and grip. All remote control switches are grouped within easy reach to enhance comfort and provide better control. The hand-resting area is also enlarged to provide greater comfort while driving. Steering feel has also been enhanced with an improved motor-driven power steering system and extensive use of lightweight, rigid aluminium for the rack assembly, for greater precision and feedback. Overall friction for the steering system has been reduced by more than 20 percent compared with the previous model.

The Tucson’s motor-driven power steering is more efficient and quieter than traditional hydraulic systems by reducing parasitic losses from ancillary belts and their continual drag on the powertrain. Furthermore, the steering system has been upgraded for more precise and rapid adjustments in steering feel with changing driving conditions. The steering wheel itself now offers a wider range of tilt and telescopic adjustment for greater driver comfort.

COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY FEATURES

Built with over 50 percent of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS), the new Tucson has the highest usage of AHSS in its class and with a structure that is enhanced for crash safety. The Tucson is engineered to provide its passengers with multiple defensive safety layers. The A-pillar and mirror blind spots were reduced for enhanced driver visibility. The steel unibody has integrated crumple zones and a high-tensile front sub-frame designed to work together to reduce the forces that typically reach the passenger compartment. The center pillars serve as the anchors of a ring structure, which improves, overall side structure stiffness while also creating more room for the door armrest and seat. All four doors also have internal guard beams to protect passengers in a side-impact collision.

The entire body shell has been made stiffer and lighter thanks to extensive use of advanced high-strength steel, and the use of Tailor Welded Blanks (TWB) reinforces key structural members. TWB assemblies combine steels of different thickness and grades using a sophisticated laser welding and stamping process to achieve an optimal stiffness-to-weight ratio. TWBs reduce body weight while enhancing crash energy management.

As with all Hyundai models, the new Tucson also features a state-of-the-art safety system that offers optimal driving stability. These include the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, Hillstart Assist Control (HAC), Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with an Automatic Vehicle Hold feature. The Elegance variant is fitted with two airbags while the Executive variant has six airbags.

More information on the specifications for the two variants can be found in the specification sheet.

HSDM offers a 5-year or 300,000km (whichever comes first) warranty on all its new passenger vehicles. A 24-hour road assist service is also now available to new and existing Hyundai vehicles.  For more information or to place bookings, interested parties can head to the nearest sales outlet or call Hyundai’s Customer Careline at 1-300-13-2000.

All New Hyundai Tucson on display at Paradigm Mall

There is a Hyundai roadshow this weekend at the Paradigm Mall in Petaling Jaya. They are displaying the soon to be launched 2016 Hyundai Tucson over there.

It looks good. Very much like a scaled down Hyundai Santa Fe, which to my eyes is one of the nicer looking SUVs under RM200k.
It will be powered by the same engine as the current Sonata, the 2.0liter NU engine with 155ps 192nm torque. Even the gearbox is the same 6 speed automatic.

It says 'executive' on the tailgate. So this could be the one with most of the bells and whistles.

Hyundai Motor is the 39th biggest brand in the WORLD

Hyundai is currently the fourth largest vehicle manufacturer in the world. Hyundai operates the world's largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility in Ulsan, South Korea, which has an annual production capacity of 1.6 million units. The company employs about 75,000 people worldwide. Hyundai vehicles are sold in 193 countries through some 6,000 dealerships and showrooms. The company first started in 1967 as an assembler. It is now the 39th biggest brand in the world and the 7th biggest automobile brand in the world according to Interbrand.

It built and designed its first car in 1975. In the 1980s it first started exporting cars to North America. In the 1990s Hyundai set up a plant in India and it is now its center for small car production. It is the 7th most notable car brand according to Interbrand and is worth USD$11.3Billion.

Makes you wonder how they've done so well in about 47 years (with a self designed car coming at least a decade later) compared to say a brand with 32years old. Maybe its time to look east again, but further north this time.

Hyundai Tucson and Sonata Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards

In one of the American automotive industry’s most rigorous tests of vehicle safety, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson and 2016 Hyundai Sonata earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. This is the first time Tucson, which received a significant redesign for the 2016 model year, has received the highest honor from IIHS.

We currently get the Hyundai Sonata 2.0 and that is a mighty fine car to drive. It has been winning awards over in America and there is no doubt that it is a good D segment car for most of us to own. As for the all-new Tucson, I actually can't wait for it to reach Malaysian shores. The overall styling of the new Tucson apes its larger sibling, the Santa Fe. That is a well proportioned SUV. So this slightly smaller SUV now gets the same styling cues which I like. I dig those muscular wheel arches. If this new third generation Hyundai Tucson drives as well as the current crop of Hyundais sold here, then it will be something to look forward to.

PRESS RELEASE

Hyundai Tucson and Sonata Earn
IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards

-Hyundai Tucson and Sonata earned the Insurance Institute for Highway    Safety’s (IIHS) 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+
-First time Tucson receiving the highest honor from IIHS

October 1, 2015 - In one of the industry’s most rigorous tests of vehicle safety, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson and 2016 Sonata earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. This is the first time Tucson, which received a significant redesign for the 2016 model year, has received the highest honor from IIHS.

IIHS rates vehicles for occupant protection based on performance in five tests: moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. Winners of the 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test. Vehicles also need an available front crash prevention system with an advanced or superior rating.

"Hyundai's redesign of the Tucson earns the 2016 model our top rating in the small overlap front test, and the Sonata retains its acceptable rating," said David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer. "Both vehicles have an available front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating in the IIHS autobrake test, a key criteria to qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award."

“Hyundai’s commitment to occupant safety is paramount throughout our entire lineup,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “We strive to develop technologies that assist in avoiding crashes all together, like forward collision warning, lane departure warning and emergency brake assist, and are pleased the Tucson and Sonata have received these awards related to occupant protection when collisions do occur.”

Multiple advanced safety technology options are available on the 2016 Tucson, including AEB with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Backup Warning Sensors and a standard rearview camera. In addition, advanced high-strength steel represents over 50 percent of the new Tucson’s structure, for enhanced crash safety. The vehicle also features a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that alerts drivers if one or more tires are under-inflated, including the tire’s location.

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Sonata lineup includes Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control System, seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, four-wheel disc brakes and ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with indicators for each tire. Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Smart Cruise Control with spot/start capability, Rear Parking Sensors, Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) are available as options.

Spy photos of the upcoming all new Hyundai Elantra

This is the soon to the launched all new Hyundai Avante Elantra. Avante in Korea and most probably Elantra in Malaysia and everywhere else (as usual). Someone sneaked a photo of it out from the Hyundai factory in Korea and I must say that it looks good.

The car looks like a shrunken down Hyundai Sonata as well as the usual Audi-esque design cues you see everywhere in Hyundai and Kia these days. Especially at the front end of the car. In fact, the overall design looks better than most Audi cars these days. I blame this good fortune on Peter Schreyer, the ex-Audi designer who has made both Hyundai and Kia vehicles look extremely good these past few years.

Take a look at that front end - boomerang driving lights on the bumper, a large hexagonal grille that is more shapely than even a Sporty Audi A5, those slits for headlights and a bonnet that has a rake downwards as it reaches the nose. All of these little touches actually lift the car's styling to another level. The only gripe I would have it the rear end. Whilst it is taken from the Sonata and has those nice LED tail lights, the lower part looks a little too plain. Oh well, you can't win 'em all. This is actually pretty good considering the price range this Elantra / Avante will be selling in.

My prediction for Malaysian sales is that the car would be in by mid next year in CBU (fully imported form) before CKD local production is commenced. This would be a nice car for a small family or one that wishes to downsize and still get some nice exterior styling and a refined C segment drive too.

The interior gets the current Sonata styling too - better center vents and infotainment screen placement compared to before.

Road Test: 2015 Hyundai Elantra 1.6 A/T Elegance

Lots of people buy cars in the RM50,000-RM90,000 price range. This range includes a variety of cars ranging from small hatchbacks to small sized family sedans. The most popular would be the 4 door sedan. We Malaysians love cars with 4 doors and a boot. This car concept still holds true even though Perodua and other manufacturers have made inroads with popular small hatchbacks. But do note that you do see a large number of B segment sedans out there.

The thing with B segment sedans on sale right now is that they are mainly sedans based on B segment hatchbacks. This basically means a supermini sized car with a wheelbase of under 2,600mm most of the time and is also narrow. It usually means entry level fittings as it is obviously made to a price and designed to the category and price it needs to sell. Now usually if you buy a supermini, you have this amount of soundproofing, this amount of space and maybe this amount of engineering required and usually manufacturers, do to wanting to keep costs down give you this amount of car. This is why you do not get the amount of refinement, high speed performance and other good stuff you could get if you bought a larger C (small sized family car) or D (full sized car).  So whilst popular, those who bought B segment cars, or small sedans are paying less for more compromises.

So if you are one of those on a budget, a B segment car makes sense as it would have good fuel economy and is affordable to purchase. The top specced cars would have all the electronic equipment thrown in it - like SATNAV, blueteeth, USB ports, infotainment, some cow skin for seats and other perceived items of luxury. But you don't really get really good stuff like extra space, extra roadholding that comes from a longer wheelbase) and added soundproofing as well as other stuff that has to be engineered into the car during manufacturing. This is why a larger category car is always the better buy in terms of actual value for money. You want a better infotainment system? Buy one after market.

This is where the 2015 Hyundai Elantra facelift comes in. I tested the Hyundai Elantra 1.6 A/T Elegance and it actually ticks all the correct boxes when it comes to affordable car ownership in Malaysia. It costs RM88,577.34 with insurance to buy and drive away. It is a C segment or small family sedan that you can buy for the price of a top of the range B segment sedan (like the smaller Toyota Vios and Honda City or that fugly Nissan Almera).

It is a larger car. It has a 2,700mm wheelbase compared to many B segment cars which have a sub 2,600mm wheelbase. This means that there is more space between the front and rear wheels folks. This is the space required to fit the passenger cabin of a car and an extra 100mm in length actually makes ANY car a nicer place to be in. That longer wheelbase also translates to a comfortable ride too. And the boot is big too.

Aside from the space, the interior is also made up of nicer to touch plastics. There is a soft touch dashboard instead of one with just hard plastics. The plastics used are well put together and feel like a C segment car. This Elantra, being a facelifted version gets better placed air vents in the middle that can now direct air to the rest of the cabin instead of blowing air to my fingers and hand. Hyundai has corrected this major flaw in the Elantra with this facelift. The seats which are of course manually adjustable gives decent support and I somehow find myself perched lower than when I drove the Elantra when it was first launched a few years back in Malaysia. So Hyundai has corrected the flaws in the cabin. Yay.

As for the driving experience, the engine, a 1.6liter 130ps/157Nm 4 cylinder engine coupled to a 6 speed automatic is actually smooth and provides ample performance. I think Hyundai has tweaked the power delivery of this facelifted model as it feels like it has more low down power than before. 0-100kmh is done in about 11.5seconds. This is about right for a 1.6liter C segment sedan and that 6 speed automatic is as good as the one fitted in the Sonata. It is smooth and has suitable gear ratios. It is willing to drop down two gears if you are in the mood for spirited driving.

The all round disc brakes is a nice thing to have at this price range. No drum brakes is always a plus point. Brakes feel good and easy to modulate. Cruising at around 140kmh is also pretty serene. That very aerodynamic looking shape allows the Elantra to be quiet at high speeds. There is very little wind noise even from the front A pillars of the car (Again, its that longer wheelbase - it allows a very aerodynamic design compared to smaller, B segment cars).

The only real issues with this basic, entry level model is there is some slack and vagueness in the steering. I think it is because of the 16inch wheels and tyre combo. You cannot expect ride comfort and pin sharp handling from comfort spec 205/55/16 tyres. Good ride though. This fact was confirmed by a Mercedes Benz owner as well as my eleven year old daughter who said that the rear seats are comfortable enough for her (take her word for it as she has spent most of her life in the back seats of everything from an SUV, MPV, luxury sedans, airport limos, taxis and to hitching a ride in a tow truck). So personally, the Elantra 1.6 base model here is about very average in terms of driving pleasure. It does everything else very well though. I am also sure that handling is the furthest from the minds of families who want comfortable and decent transport.

Sure this car does not have all the bells and whistles of something fully specced like a nice infotainment system instead of a basic radio/CD player and other luxuries. But at least the vanity mirrors in the front sun visors both have lights and covers. Very upscale.  I had this base Elantra I was not unhappy at all with it even once. It did what it was meant to do, which is transport me from A to B in relative comfort. The Elantra may have been around for awhile already but it did not fall short of any expectation on what a sub RM90,000 family sedan should be. Or how a RM100,000 C segment car should be either. There would not be much difference if you drove a Toyota Corolla Altis or even a Honda Civic instead of this. It fact, because of this it is the most spacious, comfortable, refined car in the price range. The only other cars that come close are the Kia Cerato 1.6 (slightly pricier) and the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Sedan (better handling less interior space). But I have to say, the Elantra, whilst being the cheapest, covers most of the important bases when it comes to affordable family motoring.

I truly wonder why there are not a whole lot more of them on the roads of Malaysia. At this price range I do suggest that people stop being brand snobs and actually buy value. Imagine, a larger segment car for the price of a smaller one. It's the deal that those who are looking should grab. That slightly Italic 'H' logo, i.e Hyundai, should not be taken lightly anymore. It is actually very, very capable.

Pros: very affordable, spacious, good ride quality, decently equipped, larger than most cars offered at this price, good drivetrain, fresh looking styling, a soft touch dashboard when all in this price range is hard plastic

Cons: vague steering with some off center freeplay, average handling,

Conclusion: best sedan money can buy under RM90,000. May not be a driver's car, but it does everything averagely well.

The Hyundai Sonata wins another award over in America - They seem to love it there

Recently, the Hyundai Sonata garnered another award over in America. AutoPacific is a future-oriented automotive marketing and product-consulting firm. Every year AutoPacific publishes a wide variety of syndicated studies on the automotive industry and this year, the Sonata wins the AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Award for mid-sized sedans (yup, a D segment car is a 'mid' sized car over in the United States of America).

Now I sometimes do hope that such an award would translate to more Sonatas on Malaysian roads. They're certainly better than some Japanese D segment cars out there today. Of course, I also note that the interior of the USDM Sonata pictured below looks a little bit more luxurious than what we get here. I suppose it's that little bit of wood here and there which we don't get. It does lift the interior ambiance a tad bit in my opinion. Of course, there are those who do not like wood as it makes the car look uncle-like. Does it really?

AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Award

July 9, 2015 - The 2015 Hyundai Sonata earned the top mark in the midsize sedan category in AutoPacific’s 19th annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards for its outstanding quality. In addition, Hyundai ranked within the top three mainstream brands in owner satisfaction.

“Today, there are many midsize sedans for shoppers to choose from, but the Sonata stands out in the crowded segment for satisfying owners from interior comfort and styling to fuel economy and performance,” said Brandon Ramirez, senior group manager, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The Sonata achieves the highest customer experience with its quality combined with value, technology, design and safety.”

The Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are based on survey responses from more than 66,000 owners of new 2015 model-year cars and light trucks. The annual survey measures owner satisfaction on 50 separate attributes. These awards identify the most satisfying vehicles on the market and are an industry benchmark that measures how satisfied owners are with their new vehicle.

“Hyundai is continually improving owner satisfaction in key areas like reliability and quality, yet it is also hitting the mark with safety, braking, handling, styling and seat comfort, not to mention a very satisfying warranty program,” said George Peterson, president, AutoPacific.

The seventh-generation 2015 Sonata offers a more refined look through a new Fluidic Sculpture design language, stiffer body structure, enhanced ride quality, reduced noise, vibration and harshness and more convenience features. No longer reserved for luxury cars, advanced safety technologies such as Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Lane Departure Warning System are all available in this midsize sedan.

Furthermore, the Sonata’s smart trunk gives owners a convenient hands-free way to open the trunk while keeping both feet firmly planted on the ground, so putting items away is easier and more convenient. The owner simply needs to approach the Sonata’s trunk with the key fob in a purse or pocket and wait three seconds. The trunk will automatically open, making it easy to place items inside when hands are full. Sonata truly democratizes the premium design and convenient technology of the Genesis sedan for the mid-size class.
