Driven: 1996 Mercedes Benz R170 SLK230 Kompressor with only 22,000+ miles on the clock


The Mercedes Benz you see above is the 1996 Mercedes Benz R170 SLK230 Kompressor. It is a roadster by definition and is the first of the small compact Mercedes Benz designed to capitalise on the emergence of the compact luxury car market. The car in some ways was to compete with the more affordable Mazda MX5 roadster as well as ending up going head to head with other compact coupes like the BMW Z3 and the Porsche Boxster.


The designation "SLK" derives from the company's design mission to create a roadster that was sporty, light and short - sportlich, leicht und kurz. It was also one of the first retractable hard top roadsters. Prior to this most came with a canvas soft top with the option of a removable hard top which you stowed away at home. The folding metal roof made it very practical and also added a level of security you don't find in normal soft tops. Thieves with knives would find the knife useless as there was no canvas top to cut through.

Anyway, I got to drive this roadster recently. 22,000 plus miles on the clock and quite a vehicle. It was a company director's car that was hardly used throughout its life. The new owner (only the third) of this car had treated it to a respray after he sourced a facelifted (post 2000 cars) front and rear bumpers and side skirts. AMG 17 inch wheels with the correct offset and tyre size were also sourced. It was given a full checkup at a Mercedes Benz specialist too. So to my eyes this car from the mid 1990s looked pretty up to date. You actually wouldn't have thought that this car came from 1996. It is quite up to date actually.

So whilst the R170 SLK230 Kompressor still looks pretty current it does not drive like a car from 2015. It does feel like something from 1995. It may be a small and compact looking roadster, but when you start driving, it feels like a Mercedes Benz from an age gone by. The recirculating ball steering rack is so detatched from the road that when you turn the wheel hard it actually takes a split second or two before the car actually makes that direction change. You turn the wheel and then straighten it out immediately it would actually feel like the car just started to turn when you have already straightened out the wheel. It isn't direct at all. When you press the accelerator pedal you wait a while before the engine reacts. This is supposedly a very healthy low mileage supercharged roadster. You are cruising at around 2,000rpm. You press full throttle, wait, and then you hear the wail of the supercharged engine reacting. Then you wait till it gets to about 3,500rpm before it explodes. Then the fun begins. 



This car is all about mid range pull and above. It is just about the building up of speed instead of instantaneous power. It does feel in some ways like the C36 AMG I drove a while ago. You press the throttle, speed builds up and suddenly you feel a rapid surge at mid-range and above. This would basically mean that if you leave it to its 5 speed automatic gearbox, you will feel nothing rapid happening below 3,000rpm and suddenly at around 3,750rpm the revs climb harder and higher faster. The engine had just woken up and suddenly found some legs. I don't think there is a hole in the gearing of the car. For a supercharged engine this car is very cammy in feel with power coming in later in the rev range. Like a rolling stone. It starts of slowly and then halfway down the hill it becomes unstoppable. That sudden rush makes the drive thrilling to some aspects.

Official specifications say that the R170 SLK 230 does the 0-100kmh time in about 7.6seconds for a 1996 model. I have no doubt this car would manage the same time but is from a standing start. Driving it on the roads requires some work on you part. Whilst specs say that its 280Nm torque comes in at 2,500rpm I doubt this is so. This car had 22,000 genuine miles on the clock. A low miler with a healthy engine. Everything only comes into play above 3,500rpm. At least I get to enjoy the whine of the supercharger. It does add some character that the stock exhaust does not add to the drive experience - the exhaust is tinny in sound. Needs one of those Remus or Brabus backboxes to bring out some bass.

Now handling of the SLK230. So you basically if you're gunning it, you HAVE TO turn in early to corner, then you also have to plan ahead on when and where you'd like the power to come in too. This is actually a car that you would need to do some planning and managing if you want to drive really fast. There is grip in the chassis and the larger 225/45/17 and 245/40/17 tyres (set on AMG alloy wheels). But being a mid-1990s Mercedes Benz, the traction control plays it safe and if you exited a junction in the wet, it would be flashing away whilst you are flooring it. It isn't super intrusive but you know its there if you really start pushing it. The traction control also does not fully go away even if you turn it off. The brakes are quite reasonable with sufficient (for something so old) bite. It does have a bit of travel but it isn't as bad as if it were a W124 Mercedes Benz sedan. 

So a Porsche Boxster from the same era would run rings around this SLK. But it still brings you a sense of occasion when you drive this. Maybe this is what it is all about with the SLK230. I still like the car even though I would have to actually work hard to drive properly fast in it. Maybe this is because trying to drive fast in a modern car isn't as challenging as driving this. It is quite easy to drive fast in a Volkswagen Passat 1.8TSI compared to this. Maybe it is the thrill of driving a brute or a challenge that makes this drive in the SLK230 a drive to remember more than even if you go faster in a more modern car.


However, once you are pottering around in the suburbs things are sedate and serene. As its a Mercedes Benz, this roadster does wafting and open top motoring very well. Everything at low speeds is perfect. The steering weight, the throttle, the steering and everything you touch feels good. It is a little brittle according to the owner. This was the time when Mercedes Benz decided that their cars were overbuilt and they decided to cut costs. Big mistake. It cost them and it was only after 2004-2005 that things were nearly as normal as before. The only non-build quality issue that is irritating is the noise the folding hardtop makes when it is up. It squeaks and rattles a fair bit. It needs frequent lubrication of the rubber seals and joints but that is a chore that hasn't been done yet. The owner has to frequently utilise the folding roof often so that the motor is exercised too. Lack of use would also jam it up. Convertible ownership has its ups and downs. 

Now that was a nice pun, wasn't it. And yes. I loved this car. I loved its characteristics and its flaws. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. Most old Mercedes Benz aren't. But that sense of occasion they give is something I always treasure. 

The 17 inch AMG alloy wheels make the car look better than on its standard 16 inches.

To approach the child safety concerns, the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP), a body that gives ratings to vehicles with child occupant protection, will be organizing an ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Day. The event will be held on 11 November 2015 at Autoliv Hirotako Safety Sdn. Bhd. The objectives of the event are to promote the use of child restraint system (CRS) and to introduce the standards related to CRS to the general public. The highlight of the event will be a demonstration to evaluate the performance of child seat.

ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Day
Kajang, 16 October 2015 – Child occupant safety inside a vehicle is one of the most concerned topics discussed recently. There have been incidents whereby a child could have been saved if he/she was properly restrained. Even the vehicle itself plays a significant role in providing protection to the child occupant with child safety fitment system.
To approach the child safety concerns, the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP), a body that gives ratings to vehicles with child occupant protection, will be organizing an ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Day. The event will be held on 11 November 2015 at Autoliv Hirotako Safety Sdn. Bhd. The objectives of the event are to promote the use of child restraint system (CRS) and to introduce the standards related to CRS to the general public. The highlight of the event will be a demonstration to evaluate the performance of child seat.
ASEAN NCAP Chairman, Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon said, “ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Day is a positive step towards promoting the importance of using CRS. CRS is able to minimize the risk of a child being fatally injured when involved in an accident. We are also inviting a speaker from Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP) to share their experiences in CRS and hope to educate the public on this.”
According to ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, “We have been planning the event since middle of this year. The timing is opportune with the recent complaint we received from a consumer regarding the removal of top tether in one of our tested vehicles”. He added that top tether is an important component to improve child protection system inside a vehicle apart from ISOFIX. However, Khairil also emphasized that, “The significant value of top tether can only be seen when the child is restraint inside a child seat. If no child seat is used, with or without top tether, it will not make any difference of protecting the child inside the vehicle.”
ASEAN NCAP Child Safety Day event at Autoliv is spearheaded by Mr. Yahaya Ahmad, ASEAN NCAP child safety expert. Yahaya said the Child Safety Day aims to promote safe travelling with children. He added, “Other than simply using child seats, it is also important to correctly install child seats inside a vehicle by parents or care givers in order to obtain maximum protection. Hence, we are also arranging for an expert to perform a demo on how to use child seat correctly.”
Currently the ASEAN NCAP Child Safety is only opened to invited guests. Interested parties who would like to attend the event are encouraged to register themselves with ASEAN NCAP Communications Officer, Mrs. Salina Mustaffa at 03-89249200 (ext. 425) by 30 October 2015 as only limited seats are available.
ASEAN NCAP
ASEAN NCAP is a new addition to the NCAP organizations around the world, which is targeted to enhance safety standards, raise consumer awareness and thus encourage a market for safer vehicles in the Southeast Asia region (ASEAN community). This is a collaborative effort by MIROS and Global NCAP, in which the latter funded the pilot phase of the project. ASEAN NCAP is also supported by the membership of Automobile Associations from Malaysia (AAM), the Philippines (AAP), Singapore (AA Singapore), Cambodia (AAC) and Thailand (RAAT).
Currently, ASEAN NCAP Steering Committee (SC) is chaired by the Director-General of MIROS/ASEAN NCAP Chairman, Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon and the Technical Committee (TC) is chaired by the ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim.
Frontal Offset Crash Test
Frontal Offset crash test is conducted by having crash test dummies (Hybrid III 50th percentile - male) at both the driver and front passenger seats and two child dummies (P3 and P1.5) inside the child restraint system (CRS) in the test car that moves at 63 km/h (closing speed) when it hit a crash barrier (crushable aluminium barrier). The test results are described below.
  • Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) – Driver & Front Passenger
The result from sensors installed in the dummies and at the body of the car will be analyzed and classified by human body region. To sum up, the worst result from each dummy (implies injury level; compared) by body region is considered and accumulated (A). The assessment on the vehicle is also carried out to consider real-world situation known as “modifier” assessment (B). Any “penalty” (B) will be deducted from the previous score (A) to produce the final score (C = A – B). Out of 16 points (C), the star rating will be determined by the following scheme.

The result for child occupants will be based on the CRS used in the test as well as the injury level read by the in-dummy sensors. The P3 and and P1.5 child dummies represent 3-year-old and 18-month-old infant, respectively. Thus, by test definition, the result can be defined as “the level of protection for the child occupant by using the stated CRS model in that car with specified (available) CRS attachment method e.g. by using ISOFIX, top tether or solely seatbelt”.
The final result that is in percentage-based will be derived from the following scheme.

Starting January 2015, side impact test (UN R95) was introduced as a new pre-requisite in AOP for 3-Star and above (pass-fail).
ASEAN NCAP Rating Plate – Results Simplified for Public Consumption
As the result of the test is primarily for public consumption i.e. for consumers to consider the quality of safety protection offered by the car model based on NCAP assessment, they can simply refer to the star rating for AOP as well as COP. Due to the above mentioned changes in the rating scheme, a new result plate is introduced effective from September 2013.

Volkswagen Beetle Bug edition and Beetle Club edition all sold out in record time


Sometimes cars just sell themselves. Volkswagen Malaysia has just sold out its run of the Beetle Bug edition (above) and the Beetle Club edition (below) . Info Loker Oktober 2015 PT Pupuk Kaltim - PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (disebut juga Pupuk Kaltim) adalah sebuah salah satu perusahaan industri strategis di Indonesia dengan lima unit pabrik Amoniak dan lima unit pabrik Urea yang terletak dalam satu lokasi yang terletak di Bontang, Kalimantan Timur dan merupakan anak PT Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company (dahulu PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja). Sementara unit pabrik NPK tersebar di tiga kota (Bontang, Semarang, dan Surabaya), termasuk juga produksi pupuk organik (dinamakan zeorganik) yang tersebar di lima daerah (Demak, Banyuwangi, Parepare, Badung, dan Lombok Timur).
Pada tahun 1977, sebuah proyek pupuk lepas pantai dimulai di atas dua buah kapal milik Pertamina, produsen minyak Indonesia yang terbesar, yang kemudian menjadi awal dari berdirinya PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur. Kesuksesan proyek tersebut akhirnya mengawali berdirinya sebuah pabrik seluas 493 ha (hektar) yang tadinya merupakan area hutan yang sangat padat di lereng perbukitan hutan Kalimantan Timur. Tepatnya pada tanggal 7 Desember 1977, PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (Pupuk Kaltim) resmi berdiri. Bahan baku utama bagi pabrik di Bontang ini adalah gas alam yang disalurkan melalui pipa dari Muara Badak, sekitar 60 km dari lokasi pabrik.
Lowongan Kerja Oktober 2015 PT Pupuk Kaltim - Pada awalnya proyek Pupuk Kaltim dikelola oleh Pertamina dengan fasilitas pabrik pupuk terapung atau pabrik di atas kapal. Karena beberapa pertimbangan teknis maka sesuai Keppres No.43 tahun 1975 lokasi proyek dialihkan ke darat, dan melalui Keppres 39 tahun 1976 pengelolaannya diserahkan dari Pertamina ke Departemen Perindustrian.
Tahun 1979 pembangunan pabrik Kaltim-1 mulai dilaksanakan dan masa operasi komersial pertama kali dimulai pada tahun 1987. Pabrik Kaltim-2 mulai dibangun pada awal tahun 1982 dan diselesaikan 3 bulan lebih cepat dari jadwal yang ditetapkan serta berhasil mencapai masa operasi komersial lebih cepat dari Kaltim-1, yaitu pada tahun 1984. Pabrik Kaltim-1 dan pabrik Kaltim-2 diresmikan oleh Presiden Soeharto pada tanggal 28 Oktober 1984.
Pabrik Kaltim-3 dibangun tahun 1986 dan diresmikan pada tanggal 4 April 1989. Selain itu dibangun pula unit pembuatan urea formaldehyde (UFC-85) dengan kapasitas 13.000 ton per tahun yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pupuk urea yang dihasilkan.

Cikal bakal perusahaan ini adalah PT Pembangkitan Tenaga Listrik Jawa-Bali I (PLN PJB I), yang didirikan pada tanggal 3 Oktober 1995 sebagai anak perusahaan PLN yang waktu itu baru saja berubah statusnya dari Perum menjadi Persero. Pada tanggal 3 Oktober 2000, PJB I berubah nama menjadi PT Indonesia Power. Indonesia Power mengelola 8 Unit Bisnis Pembangkitan: Priok, Suralaya, Saguling, Kamojang, Mrica, Semarang, Perak-Grati dan Bali.
Bisnis utama IP adalah pengoperasian pembangkit listrik di Jawa dan Bali yang tersebar di 8 lokasi. Unit usaha pembangkitan IP diberi nama Unit Bisnis Pembangkitan (UBP).
