CONFERENCE OF ASEAN ROAD SAFETY 2015

Top Experts Meet To Find Ways to Enhance Road Safety in ASEAN

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 NOVEMBER 2015: As the United Nations’ Decade of Action for

Road Safety reaches its mid-point, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research

(MIROS) gathered the region’s top experts to galvanise efforts to enhance road safety.

The 4-day Conference of ASEAN Road Safety 2015 (CARS 2015) is the first ever road

safety event organised on a regional scale and saw the participation of more than 300

experts, comprising policy makers, scientists, researchers, practitioners, law enforcers,

academicians and a wide range of public and private organisations from ASEAN region.

Held at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel from 3rd to 6

“Road Safety: Addressing the Bottom Billions” to reflect the majority of the region’s

population who are in the middle and lower income categories. The conference decided

to focus on the middle and lower income groups as they are exposed to higher risks of

road trauma because many of them are motorcycle riders, while drivers are less likely to

be able to afford cars packed with safety features.

Recognising that road trauma has an incredible impact on the health and economic

growth of all nations, the United Nations announced 2011 to 2020 as the Decade of

Action for Road Safety with the aim of reducing the number of road accidents globally.

At the start of the decade in 2011, more than 75,000 people died in road crashes in

ASEAN countries and many more sustained long term injuries. In Malaysia, the Royal

Malaysian Police recorded 476,196 cases of road accidents in 2014, with 6,187

Appointed as the ASEAN Road Safety Centre in November 2014, MIROS is taking the

lead to enhance road safety in the region by gathering experts to exchange insights and

findings to improve road safety efforts further.

“While each country has their respective road safety enforcement, advocacy and

research agencies, we believe that by synergising our efforts and knowledge, we can

achieve better results. Efforts to improve road safety is no doubt a priority of all

governments, as traffic accidents can result in damages to vehicles, injuries and loss of

lives,” said Deputy Transport Minister of Malaysia, YB Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, who

officiated the opening of CARS 2015.

A total of 63 research papers were submitted and discussed at the conference. The

papers revolve around these topics: Road Safety Management, Sustainable

Infrastructure, Vehicle Safety, Road Users, Pre and Post-crash Trauma, Safety

Technology, and a special topic on Motorcycle Safety. At the end of CARS 2015, some

of the outstanding papers will be published in the Journal of Transportation Safety and

Security on “Road Safety in Developing Countries”.

“We will use CARS 2015 as a launch pad to establish a regional network of road safety

experts. This synergy will allow for continuous cooperation and alignment of road safety

efforts across the region,” said MIROS Director-General Professor Dr. Wong Shaw

About Conference of ASEAN Road Safety 2015 (CARS2015)

The inaugural Conference of ASEAN Road Safety 2015 (CARS2015) (was previously

branded as ARSC2015) aims to bring together policy makers, scientists, researchers,

Shell Launches the Shell V-Power LEGO Collection - Now Available at Shell Stations throughout Malaysia

#ReadySetBuild - Shell officially launched its new Shell V-Power LEGO Collection at Sunway Pyramid today. This is an exclusive range of small LEGO sets that are based around Ferrari and Shell respectively. The collection was created in collaboration with Ferrari and the LEGO group and introduces six new models - four iconic Ferrari cars (with a tiny pull-back motor in them), a Finish Line and Podium set which includes a LEGO minifigure (minifig), and a set of the Shell Station modelled after the one at Ferrari's Foriano Circuit - Ferrari's private racetrack in Maranello. The Shell Station set comes with a Shell Scientist minifig.

Tuan HJ Azman Ismail (pictured above, in the middle), Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd said that Shell are excited that through the Shell V-Power LEGO Collection, they can bring people together. He said that "Motorists, race fans, toy enthusiasts, children and adults alike (will) make Shell a happy pit stop for all. We believe that the simple act of building can be more meaningful and fun if shared with others. Our hope is for our customers to not simply build the Shell V-Power collection but form closer bonds in the process"

He further added that many Malaysians had played with LEGO bricks when they were young. " So why not relive the good old days with friends? With the school holidays fast approaching, perhaps parents can spend more time with their children by building Ferrari collectibles and LEGO playsets" he added.

So how do you go about getting these unique, LEGO sets? You need a minimum purchase of RM40 of Shell V-Power and Shell FuelSave fuel or purchase a 4litre pack of Shell Helix motor oil. Once that purchase is made, you will be able to purchase one of the six LEGO model sets which are priced at RM9.90 and RM13.90. It is RM9.90 if you pump RM40 worth of V-Power 97 or V-Power Racing or buy 4liters of Shell Helix HX5 or 4 liters of HX7. You will have to fork out RM13.90 for each LEGO set if you pump RM40 worth of Shell FuelSave 95 or Shell Diesel.

There is also a limited edition Shell Tanker for RM9.90 with every RM40 pump of Shell V-Power or if you purchase either 4liters of Shell Helix HX5 and HX7. You can however get the Shell Tanker free if you purchase the 4 liter pack of Shell Helix Ultra engine oil. The Shell Tanker should only be available after the 13th of November 2015.

Speaking about the LEGO model sets release dates, the models were made available from the 1st of November 2015. The first Shell V-Power LEGO collectible sets have been released so far and new models will be released every Sunday - from the 1st of November 2015 to the 13th December 2015. It would be available at all Shell stations for purchase until 31st January 2016 or while stocks lasts.

Customers are also encouraged to share on Social Media (on INSTAGRAM) photos of their Shell V-Power LEGO models and their building moments (family bonding memories, friends building the sets. etc) by using the hashtag #ReadySetBuild and #my to the photos. There may be some interesting events coming on soon with regards to the photo sharing activities, so stay tuned folks.

Aside from the above, Shell is also inviting everyone to visit the Shell V-Power LEGO activity centres at Sunway Pyramid, Petaling Jaya on the 5th to 8th November 2015 and at the Gurney Plaza, Penang on the 12th to 15th November 2015 where they will get a chance to view half sized (1:2 scale) LEGO brick based Ferrari models as well as the full sized, 1:1 scale Ferrari LEGO model car. The half sized cars are larger versions of the four Ferrari cars which you can buy - the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Ferrari F138 F1 car, the Ferrari 250GTO and the Ferrari 512S. But I like the full sized LEGO model of the Ferrari F1 car. It uses LEGO bricks for the body and aero bits, with a replica of the carbon fiber driver's tub, real suspension parts sticking out of the LEGO shell. Pretty interesting. Since it took 214,950 LEGO bricks and about 810 days to build.

There will also be roving trucks that will bring the Shell V-Power LEGO experience to the public with the life sized LEGO model of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Car too. The Truck will display the car in the Klang Valley, Ipoh, Melaka and other seclected locations throughout Malaysia.

More information of the Shell V-Power LEGO collection as well as upcoming activities pertaining to this promotion could be found at www.shell.com.my/lego.

Ford looks towards nature to find answers - First step, the Gecko Lizard

And....meanwhile....Over at the FOMOCO (Ford Motor Company) Headquarters in the States, researchers of Ford have decided to study more of nature to seek out new solutions that are sustainable to modern day challenges in design and its impact to the environment. The first step is that little lizard called the Gecko.

This little lizard can stick upside down and on most surfaces. The sticky toe pads would be researched to improve adhesives (used in automobiles especially in the interior plastics and other polyurethane that needs to be stuck together). The science involved is called BIOMIMICRY, or copying what is biologically made naturally and adapting it to what humans build.

Of course, sometimes the Gecko is also used for another company for stickiness too. On the all-wheel drive systems for grip and traction. This idea for using the little gecko for other sticky uses is new to me. Anyway, what this means in plain old English is that the research should allow us to have better glue that is easier to be recycled. Isn't that easier?

PRESS RELEASE
Looking to the Gecko for Answers; Ford to Seek Solutions by Mimicking Nature

 Ford researchers will study the gecko’s sticky toe pads for clues to improve adhesives and

increase the recyclability of auto parts

 Biomimicry is an innovative approach that looks to nature for sustainable smimiolutions to

modern-day challenges; biomimetic innovations could transform the interior design of Ford

vehicles

 Ford Motor Company recently hosted a biomimicry workshop at its Dearborn campus with

participation from Procter & Gamble and The Biomimicry Institute

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 4, 2015 – Ford Motor Company will chart new territory as it seeks to

create adhesive innovations inspired by the gecko. Ford will also work with Procter & Gamble,

sharing research findings as both companies look to biomimicry for a host of business solutions.

For years, Ford researchers have considered ways to make auto manufacturing more

sustainable. A key challenge is glue used to adhere foams to plastics and metals can make

disassembling parts for recycling nearly impossible.

Enter the gecko.

The lizard’s toe pads allow it to stick to most surfaces without liquids or surface tension. The

reptile can then easily release itself, leaving no residue. Consider, too, that a typical mature

gecko weighing 2.5 ounces is capable of supporting 293 pounds.

The gecko could inspire a host of adhesive innovations for global applications at Ford, said

Debbie Mielewski, Ford senior technical leader for plastics and sustainability research.

“Solving this problem could provide cost savings and certainly an environmental savings,” said

Mielewski. “It means we could increase the recycling of more foam and plastics, and further

reduce our environmental footprint.”

Buoyed by the biomimetic method, Ford recently hosted a forum at its Dearborn campus with

participation from Procter & Gamble and The Biomimicry Institute, a nonprofit committed to

promoting the innovative approach of looking to nature for sustainable solutions to modern-day

challenges. Nearly 200 researchers and designers took part in the day-long session to learn

about biomimicry and how to apply it to their work.

“We are excited for the opportunity to participate, together with Ford – with whom we have a

history of collaboration – in The Biomimicry Institute workshop,” said Lee Ellen Drechsler,

director for corporate connect and development, The Procter and Gamble Company. “We have

an interest within Procter & Gamble for using biomimicry as a way to broaden our approach to

solving tough research challenges.”

The biomimetic approach is not new. The Bullet Train in Shinkansen, Japan was inspired by the

kingfisher. Velcro took its cues from a burr. And improved medical needles were developed

based on the mosquito. Interest in the approach has increased in the last decade as awareness

of climate change and environmental challenges is heightened, said Gretchen Hooker, project

manager for design challenges at The Biomimicry Institute.

Founded in 2006, the group works to empower people to create sustainable products and

services using biomimicry. In addition to mobilizing educators and regional practitioners through

the Biomimicry Global Network, the organization provides a platform to learn and practice

biomimicry through multiple design challenges. These include open innovation, academic-

corporate partnerships and corporate-employee challenges where employees get hands-on

training while developing new solutions to issues corporations face. AskNature.org, the

organization’s online database of biological solutions, offers inspiration to those looking to find

answers in biomimicry.

“Ford and P&G are the first companies to take part in these new corporate-employee

challenges,” said Hooker.

Beyond recycling, the Ford design teams have worked for nearly a decade to find nature-

inspired technologies, with recent successes in yarn production for seating materials and

headliners.

Ford is the only automaker to use Unifi’s high-performance REPREVE fiber, made from 100

percent recycled materials including plastic bottles, in its vehicles. Ford employs REPREVE in

five of its vehicles – the new F-150, Explorer, Edge, Focus Electric and Fusion – making it a

globally used material. The use of REPREVE represents Ford’s commitment to reduce, reuse

and recycle, part of the automaker’s global sustainability strategy to lessen its environmental

footprint.

Ford designers are now looking to expand upon that commitment, turning to nature to further

improve the sustainable materials in vehicle fabrics. The gecko may also inspire fabric

technologies that could transform the cabin of Ford vehicles, researchers said.

“As we look to further our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint, taking a holistic,

biomimetic approach makes sense because nature has efficiencies in design and uses minimal

resources,” said Carol Kordich, global sustainable fabric strategies and development, Ford.

“Nature is the ultimate guide.”

Matthias Muller, Chairman of the Board of Management, Volkswagen AG announces key steps to realign the group

Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG (ex-CEO of Porsche), has announced the five key steps to realign the Group especially in light of the current 'DieselGate' crisis that the group is facing. I think this is very much needed as we are now hearing that the 3.0liter Volkswagen/Audi diesel engine also has some cheat device for emissions testing in them.

The crisis faced by Volkswagen group is really huge. For the first time in years the group has posted a loss. There are 600,000 employees worldwide to care about too. The key steps would be put in place (five of them) and we would now see a new game plan that would see the Volkswagen group's future to the year 2025 would be rolled out by middle of 2016. This effectively replaces the earlier Group Strategy 2018.

A lot of hard work ahead for one of the automobile industry's biggest players. And one of the hardest hit in recent history.

PRESS RELEASE
Matthias Müller unveils next steps for the Volkswagen Group

• Support for customers top priority

• Volkswagen looks beyond current crisis

• New strategy to be unveiled in 2016

Wolfsburg, October 28, 2015 – Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Board of Management

of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, has announced the five key steps to realign the

Group. “We have to look beyond the current situation and create the conditions for

Volkswagen’s successful further development”, said Müller in Wolfsburg on

Wednesday. He presented a five point plan that he intends to use so that Volkswagen

remains one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers in the future. Müller is

confident that “Volkswagen will emerge from the current situation stronger than

before”. He announced that the cornerstones of the Group’s Strategy 2025 will be

presented next year.

The Volkswagen CEO explained that his top priority is to support the customers affected by

the diesel issue. “Our customers are at the core of everything that our 600,000 employees

worldwide do”, he said. According to Müller, Volkswagen is working intensively to develop

effective technical solutions. In contact with the Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA – German Federal

Motor Transport Authority) the implementation is set to begin in January 2016.

Müller’s second priority is to systematically drive forward and complete the investigation into

what happened. “We must uncover the truth and learn from it”, he said, adding that

Volkswagen is being extremely thorough in its analysis. For this purpose, audit firm Deloitte

has been engaged in addition to the steps already announced. According to Müller, those

responsible for what has happened must face severe consequences.

Müller’s third priority is to introduce new structures in the Volkswagen Group. “The key point

is that Group management will be decentralized to a greater extent in the future”, he said,

with more independence for the brands and regions. Müller stated that the Board of

Management will focus on addressing cross-brand strategies, leveraging synergies and

ensuring that Group resources are used effectively. “We will review in detail our current

portfolio of more than 300 models and examine the contribution that each one makes to our

earnings.”

As his fourth priority, Müller is driving forward a realignment of the Group’s culture and

management behavior. He noted that the pursuit of perfection, the employees’ commitment

and social responsibility in the Volkswagen Group must be retained. However, he believes

that changes are necessary in how Volkswagen communicates and how it handles its

mistakes. “We need a culture of openness and cooperation.” Müller also called on everybody

at Volkswagen to display more courage, greater creativity and a more entrepreneurial spirit in

their dealings with one another.

The Volkswagen CEO announced that the fifth priority will be to transform the Group’s

Strategy 2018 into a Strategy 2025. “Many people outside of Volkswagen, but also some of

us, did not understand that our Strategy 2018 is about much more than production numbers.

A lot of things were subordinated to the desire to be “Faster, Higher, Larger”, especially

return on sales.” According to Müller, the point is not to sell 100,000 more or fewer vehicles

than a major competitor. Instead, the real issue is qualitative growth. Müller announced that

the cornerstones of the Group’s Strategy 2025 will be developed over the coming months,

and that it would be unveiled mid-way through next year.

Toyota Ranks Highest in New–Vehicle Sales Satisfaction Among Mass Market Brands for a Third Consecutive Year

I just had the time to read up on JD Power's latest findings about the 2015 Malaysia Sales Satisfaction Index Study which was released at the end of October 2015. Toyota as usual has come in as number one. Not surprisingly of course. Now what is my opinion about this?

Note that this are mass market brands. This means no Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz or Rolls Royce. I also see an absence of Volkswagen in the report. Volkswagen is a mass market brand. It is not a premium brand. This could mean that Volkswagen has not participated this time around or JD Power has not got a fairly large response from customers of that brand.

The Japanese seems to have got the sales process correct. Everyone seems happy with it. I think happy sales personnel would be happy to meet and greet customers. It is also how the showroom of each brand is laid out. These days most of us like to be impressed with large 4S centers. Note that Toyota has a lot of large ones. As does Honda. Mitsubishi is a surprise as it runs things on a smaller scale. They must have a dedicated sales team that knows its stuff well and treats its customers with respect.

What about Proton and Perodua? At the bottom of the chart but they are at the bottom of the food chain. Maybe if you buy cheap you get peanuts. Of course, Perodua is actually Daihatsu in disguise. A Daihatsu is actually part of Toyota. So why doesn't the Toyota philosophy trickle down to Perodua then? Again. Perodua serves at a lower price points. You don't expect red carpet treatment do you?

I also have to say that some us Malaysians are fussy fellas. That could be the actual result of this JD Power survey.

.PRESS RELEASE
Toyota Ranks Highest in New–Vehicle Sales Satisfaction Among Mass Market Brands for a Third Consecutive Year
KUALA LUMPUR: 30 OCTOBER 2015 — The percentage of consumers in Malaysia who are purchasing their household’s first vehicle is increasing dramatically, creating new challenges and opportunities for dealer salespeople, according to the J.D. Power 2015 Malaysia Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) StudySM released today.
The study, now in its 13th year, has been redesigned in 2015 and examines six factors that contribute to overall customer satisfaction with their new-vehicle purchase experience in the mass market segment. In order of importance, those factors are salesperson (19%); dealer facility (19%); delivery timing (17%); deal (16%); delivery process (16%); and sales initiation (13%). Dealership service performance is based on a 1,000-point scale. The study examines service satisfaction in the mass market segment.
Overall sales satisfaction in the mass market segment averages 752 index points in 2015.[1]
The study finds that 40 percent of new-vehicle buyers in 2015 acquired their household’s first new vehicle, a 15 percentage point increase from 2014. Overall satisfaction among these first-time buyers averages 766, compared with 740 among replacement-vehicle buyers.
The most common sources of information used among both first-time and replacement-vehicle buyers during the purchase decision process are friends/ relatives; owner of same make; and websites. Those who purchase their household’s first vehicle also cite auto shows (48%) and price guides (31%) as information sources, while replacement-vehicle buyers cite ads/ articles in newspapers/ magazines (36%) and dealer owner/ salesperson recommendations (34%).
Similarly, vehicle buyers cite the following common purchasing reasons: attractive design and styling; good fuel efficiency; and low purchase price/ attractive deal. Those who purchase their household’s first vehicle also consider good reputation of the brand (43%) and vehicle performance (42%), while replacement-vehicle buyers also consider roominess/ interior space/ comfort (45%) and good vehicle quality/ reliability (43%).
“Consumers who are buying their first vehicle have different requirements and expectations during the shopping experience than those who have purchased a new vehicle before, and that creates challenges for dealer salespeople,” said Rajaswaran Tharmalingam, country head, Malaysia, J.D. Power. “But it also creates great opportunities, as making a shopper’s first sales experience a positive and rewarding one can also build long-term customer loyalty and advocacy.”
Tharmalingam noted that while automakers have established sales processes and operating standards for their dealerships, ongoing training for salespeople is also critical. “The sales approach that works for someone who has purchased several new vehicles in the past doesn’t necessarily work for someone who has never purchased a vehicle before,” said Tharmalingam. “It is important that salespeople are trained to understand the distinct shopping behaviors of the two buyer segments so they can deliver a meaningful sales experience.”

KEY FINDINGS

  • Overall satisfaction for Malaysian national brands in the mass market segment averages 736 in 2015. Overall satisfaction with non-national brands averages 770.
  • The study identifies 22 sales standards that enhance the overall sales satisfaction experience. Customers expect a minimum of 18 of those 22 standards to be met in order to have a positive service experience. When 17 or fewer sales standards are met, satisfaction drops to 693, compared with 825 when all 22 sales standards are met.
  • Among highly satisfied customers (overall SSI scores of 842 or higher), 60 percent say they “definitely would” recommend their purchase dealer to family and friends, compared with only 11 percent of highly dissatisfied customers (scores of 670 or lower).

2015 Malaysia SSI Study Rankings

Toyota ranks highest in overall sales satisfaction among mass market brands for a third consecutive year, with a score of 791. Toyota performs particularly well in all factors except sales initiation. Mitsubishi ranks second at 787, while Honda ranks third at 758.
The 2015 Malaysia Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study is based on responses from 2,371 new-vehicle owners in the mass market segment who purchased their vehicle between August 2014 and May 2015. The study was fielded from February through July 2015.
