Newly launched Ford Ranger gets 5 star ASEAN NCAP Rating

The newly launched (facelifted) Ford Ranger has scored highest in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) with the strongest evaluation score of 15.45/16 points in the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP). The class-leading safety features loaded into this pickup truck has helped the Ford Ranger raise the bar on safety in the pickup segment by leveraging Ford's global engineering resources and advanced safety technologies. Even the two airbag version scores highly too.

Ford Ranger receives maximum 5-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP. (From L-R): Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon, ASEAN NCAP Chairman, YBhg. Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman, MIROS, David Westerman, managing director, Malaysia and Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Ford Motor Company.
So feel free to chose this as your next pickup truck if you are interested in buying one and safety is your number one priority. Me? I'd like a Ford Ranger because it is practical, easy to drive even though its huge, quite fun on the throttle and has loads of equipment too. NCAP is good if you are involved in an accident. But don't. And its good to know that if you happen to be in one in a Ford Ranger, your chances of survival are high.

PRESS RELEASE
Ford Ranger Receives Maximum 5-Star Safety Rating from ASEAN NCAP

  • Ford Ranger scored highest in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) with the strongest evaluation score of 15.45/16 points

  • Class-leading safety features help Ford Ranger raise the bar on safety in the pickup segment by leveraging Ford's global engineering resources and advanced safety technologies

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Nov. 11, 2015 – The class-defining new Ford Ranger has received the highest safety rating among all pickup trucks being tested by the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) with the strongest evaluation score in the segment of 15.45/16 points.

“Achieving 5-star ASEAN-NCAP is an important milestone in the new Ranger’s success story as we designed and developed this vehicle to challenge the conventional world of pickup trucks and provide customers with more class-leading safety features than ever," said Mark Kaufman, president, Ford ASEAN.
“Safety is always Ford’s top priority. We are hugely proud of the results we have achieved and today's announcement is further proof that the new Ranger is true to our ‘Built Ford Tough’ heritage with outstanding levels of safety customers expect in this all-important vehicle segment.”

Ford has leveraged its global engineering tools and advanced safety technologies to offer an unmatched level of occupant protection for the new Ranger. From body structure that includes a side impact protection beam to a collapsible steering column, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), the new Ranger delivers top performance in both active and passive safety.

The tested model also was equipped with dual front airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Roll Over Mitigation (ROM) and ISOFIX for child seat attachment.

In Malaysia, Ranger’s safety package is unmatched, with up to six airbags – three times more than any other pickup in the country. Ford’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX child safety mounts also come standard, making Ranger the only pickup truck in Malaysia to offer these two important safety features across all variants. All Ranger variants in Malaysia also feature driver and front passenger seatbelt reminders.

The new Ford Ranger builds on its reputation as the most capable, powerful and smartest pickup truck with an array of driver assist technologies that help to make your drive more convenient. These include:

  • Lane Keeping Alert and Lane Keeping Aid work together to help to prevent the driver from unintentionally drifting out of a lane when driving at high speeds. If the forward-facing camera detects the vehicle is straying from its lane, Lane Keeping Alert warns the driver with a vibration in the steering wheel. If no action is taken to correct the drift, Lane Keeping Aid applies steering torque to guide the vehicle back into its lane

  • Adaptive Cruise Control makes use of radar sensors to maintain both a preset speed as well as a preset distance from the vehicle ahead. When the system detects a vehicle ahead, it decelerates automatically to maintain a safe distance. It accelerates back to the driver’s preset cruising speed when the road ahead clears. An adjustable speed limiter helps drivers avoid unintentionally exceeding their selected speed

  • Forward Alert works with Adaptive Cruise Control to give drivers a visual and audible warning when the gap to a vehicle ahead drops below a safe distance. The system also charges the brakes to ensure optimum braking performance

  • Front and Rear Park Assist uses sensors to detect obstacles and provide audible warnings when the vehicle approaches obstructions at low speeds, such as when parking. A rear-view camera gives a clear view behind the vehicle, giving greater confidence when parking and hitching up a trailer

  • Other smart technologies on the new Ranger include Hill Launch Assist, to help you confidently start off from a slope, whether in forward or reverse; Hill Descent Control, which uses the traction control system to help you descend steep slopes at a constant speed; Adaptive Load Control, which adjusts the Electronic Stability Control system based on vehicle load; and Emergency Brake Assistance, which provides additional pressure to the brake system to increase braking force when you apply the brakes quickly in an emergency situation

The highest variant in the Ranger line-up, the Ranger Wildtrak also includes side and rear curtain airbags for enhanced protection.

The new Ford Ranger was introduced in ASEAN in 2015, and is built at Ford’s AutoAlliance Thailand joint-venture in Rayong, Thailand.

Ford looks towards nature to find answers - First step, the Gecko Lizard

And....meanwhile....Over at the FOMOCO (Ford Motor Company) Headquarters in the States, researchers of Ford have decided to study more of nature to seek out new solutions that are sustainable to modern day challenges in design and its impact to the environment. The first step is that little lizard called the Gecko.

This little lizard can stick upside down and on most surfaces. The sticky toe pads would be researched to improve adhesives (used in automobiles especially in the interior plastics and other polyurethane that needs to be stuck together). The science involved is called BIOMIMICRY, or copying what is biologically made naturally and adapting it to what humans build.

Of course, sometimes the Gecko is also used for another company for stickiness too. On the all-wheel drive systems for grip and traction. This idea for using the little gecko for other sticky uses is new to me. Anyway, what this means in plain old English is that the research should allow us to have better glue that is easier to be recycled. Isn't that easier?

PRESS RELEASE
Looking to the Gecko for Answers; Ford to Seek Solutions by Mimicking Nature

 Ford researchers will study the gecko’s sticky toe pads for clues to improve adhesives and

increase the recyclability of auto parts

 Biomimicry is an innovative approach that looks to nature for sustainable smimiolutions to

modern-day challenges; biomimetic innovations could transform the interior design of Ford

vehicles

 Ford Motor Company recently hosted a biomimicry workshop at its Dearborn campus with

participation from Procter & Gamble and The Biomimicry Institute

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 4, 2015 – Ford Motor Company will chart new territory as it seeks to

create adhesive innovations inspired by the gecko. Ford will also work with Procter & Gamble,

sharing research findings as both companies look to biomimicry for a host of business solutions.

For years, Ford researchers have considered ways to make auto manufacturing more

sustainable. A key challenge is glue used to adhere foams to plastics and metals can make

disassembling parts for recycling nearly impossible.

Enter the gecko.

The lizard’s toe pads allow it to stick to most surfaces without liquids or surface tension. The

reptile can then easily release itself, leaving no residue. Consider, too, that a typical mature

gecko weighing 2.5 ounces is capable of supporting 293 pounds.

The gecko could inspire a host of adhesive innovations for global applications at Ford, said

Debbie Mielewski, Ford senior technical leader for plastics and sustainability research.

“Solving this problem could provide cost savings and certainly an environmental savings,” said

Mielewski. “It means we could increase the recycling of more foam and plastics, and further

reduce our environmental footprint.”

Buoyed by the biomimetic method, Ford recently hosted a forum at its Dearborn campus with

participation from Procter & Gamble and The Biomimicry Institute, a nonprofit committed to

promoting the innovative approach of looking to nature for sustainable solutions to modern-day

challenges. Nearly 200 researchers and designers took part in the day-long session to learn

about biomimicry and how to apply it to their work.

“We are excited for the opportunity to participate, together with Ford – with whom we have a

history of collaboration – in The Biomimicry Institute workshop,” said Lee Ellen Drechsler,

director for corporate connect and development, The Procter and Gamble Company. “We have

an interest within Procter & Gamble for using biomimicry as a way to broaden our approach to

solving tough research challenges.”

The biomimetic approach is not new. The Bullet Train in Shinkansen, Japan was inspired by the

kingfisher. Velcro took its cues from a burr. And improved medical needles were developed

based on the mosquito. Interest in the approach has increased in the last decade as awareness

of climate change and environmental challenges is heightened, said Gretchen Hooker, project

manager for design challenges at The Biomimicry Institute.

Founded in 2006, the group works to empower people to create sustainable products and

services using biomimicry. In addition to mobilizing educators and regional practitioners through

the Biomimicry Global Network, the organization provides a platform to learn and practice

biomimicry through multiple design challenges. These include open innovation, academic-

corporate partnerships and corporate-employee challenges where employees get hands-on

training while developing new solutions to issues corporations face. AskNature.org, the

organization’s online database of biological solutions, offers inspiration to those looking to find

answers in biomimicry.

“Ford and P&G are the first companies to take part in these new corporate-employee

challenges,” said Hooker.

Beyond recycling, the Ford design teams have worked for nearly a decade to find nature-

inspired technologies, with recent successes in yarn production for seating materials and

headliners.

Ford is the only automaker to use Unifi’s high-performance REPREVE fiber, made from 100

percent recycled materials including plastic bottles, in its vehicles. Ford employs REPREVE in

five of its vehicles – the new F-150, Explorer, Edge, Focus Electric and Fusion – making it a

globally used material. The use of REPREVE represents Ford’s commitment to reduce, reuse

and recycle, part of the automaker’s global sustainability strategy to lessen its environmental

footprint.

Ford designers are now looking to expand upon that commitment, turning to nature to further

improve the sustainable materials in vehicle fabrics. The gecko may also inspire fabric

technologies that could transform the cabin of Ford vehicles, researchers said.

“As we look to further our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint, taking a holistic,

biomimetic approach makes sense because nature has efficiencies in design and uses minimal

resources,” said Carol Kordich, global sustainable fabric strategies and development, Ford.

“Nature is the ultimate guide.”

5 short films celebrating the MIGHTY, but Small Ford Ecoboost engine

C:\Users\cmiles\Desktop\FINAL SMB FILES\Small but Mighty Content for Markets - Light Version v2\3. Sizzle Reel Pitch Note\Images in Pitch Note\2015Mustang_t5e8790.jpg

Downsizing is the keyword with automotive engines these days. The Ford Motor Company has embraced this concept wholeheartedly. It isn't just big and mighty 5.0 V8s that power such cars like the Ford Mustang above, but a 2.3lliter Ecoboost engine. Still making 310hp / 430Nm, it still makes a large American sports car go pretty fast. In fact, the 4.6liter V8 that powered the previous generation Mustang GT made just 300hp / 433Nm. The Ecoboost is a fabulous work of engineering.

The first Ford EcoBoost engine was introduced in 2009 and since then, 5 million EcoBoost-equipped vehicles have been sold globally. In the Asia Pacific region, demand for the EcoBoost engine range is growing and Ford will be launching more vehicles equipped with the fuel-efficient technology. By the end of 2015, Ford will offer EcoBoost in Asia Pacific in more than 20 vehicles.

In Malaysia, Ford offers the award-winning 1.0L EcoBoost in the sporty Fiesta, while the versatile Kuga features a 1.5L EcoBoost, the high performance Fiesta ST has a 1.6L EcoBoost, and the stylish Mondeo, S-Max and Focus ST are powered by 2.0L EcoBoost engines.

So Ford has decided to celebrate the engine by making short films. Five of them as explained below -

Ford EcoBoost: Small But Mighty

Celebrating small acts and ideas that pack a mighty punch through five entertaining short films

Films inspired by Ford’s Small but Mighty EcoBoost engines, which deliver great power, save fuel and produce fewer emissions
Ford Motor Company presents a series of entertaining short films that celebrate the theme of Small but Mighty. The shorts, created by five emerging filmmakers from around the world, celebrate small acts and ideas that pack a mighty punch. The theme of Small but Mighty is inspired by Ford’s much-celebrated range of EcoBoost engines.

Ford’s EcoBoost engines deliver great power, use less fuel and generate fewer emissions compared with larger-displacement naturally aspirated engines. Filmmakers took up the challenge to craft short films that capture the spirit of what the engine range is all about, and demonstrate a moment in life, a person or an idea that is Small but Mighty.

From a man with incredibly strong super hero-like arms, to a young boy who dominates the soccer field; from a super granny, to a couple who are inspired by little moments that shape the mighty world – the short films explore a variety of subjects, but at their core the compelling message of Small but Mighty shines through.

Soccer Prodigy

A pint-sized football champ proves that size doesn’t matter in Soccer Prodigy. The director Jude Chun cast a talented 8 year-old with incredible ball-handling skills. The young boy’s impressive moves on the pitch steal the show in this comic book-style short.

Small but Mighty Arms

Andy Kelemen – an award winning filmmaker – produced Small but Mighty Arms. In the style of a mockumentary, the film’s comedic narrative revolves around the life of a slim man who at first struggles but then finds amazing use of his incredibly strong arms.

Mighty Ride

Viewers get taken on a heartwarming journey in Mighty Ride. Directed by Ricky Rojas, the film is based around an ethereal daydream, and features a series of stunning landscapes. It’s about the small details, moments, and actions that shape lives and the big, mighty affect they have.

E:\main figure\10.201-03.jpg

Bite with a Kick

Independent filmmaker Ellenor Argyropoulos created Bite with a Kick. The film – which is set in the Australian outback – tells the story of a family on a camping adventure, and the surprising power of a small chili.

Small but Mighty Vignettes

Daniel Brothers and Lauren Schad of Long Way Home Films weave together a series of highly visual scenes of small feats, which prove that good things really do come in small packages. Ranging from the hilarious to the heart-warming, the five scenes will leave you wanting more.

New Ford Ranger officially launched in Malaysia

The burnt orange one is the 3.2 WildTrak, 2.2 XLT is in grey

The Ford Motor Company together with local distributor Sime Darby Auto Connexion launched the new Ford Ranger earlier today. This is a very facelifted version of the Ford Ranger we see on our roads. It features a new front end design as well as more equipment and stuff.

The new Ranger gets Upgraded diesel powertrains make the new Ranger quieter, with better fuel-efficiency than before. The latest 2.2-litre Duratorq four-cylinder TDCi diesel engine delivers improved fuel efficiency and refinement whilst providing 160 PS of power and 385 Nm of torque – an increase in both power and torque over the current 2.2-litre Ranger.

The more macho 3.2liter Wildtrak gets the latest 3.2-litre Duratorq five-cylinder TDCi diesel engine. Upgrades including an updated exhaust gas recirculation system help to improve fuel efficiency by up to 12 percent, while putting out a best-in-class 200 PS of power and 470 Nm of torque. The revised engines allow more pulling as well as extra load carrying capabilities.

Other notable equipment includes six airbags, and driver assistance technologies like Lane Keeping Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control and Electronic Stability Control. This time the Ranger also gets front and rear park sensors as well as a reverse camera to make life much easier for people driving this extremely nice to drive pick-up truck. It also features a 230v power socket. This means you could power your laptop or even a fridge directly from the Ranger. Imagine going camping with a fridge. It would actually mean meat or fish caught whilst hunting can be kept fresh. As long as you keep the diesel engine running that is.

Of course, for me the most notable changes are the front end of the Ranger. It features a more cohesive front end styling but I do know there would be some of those that like the previous Ranger front end that somehow suits the very tough looking F O R D aftermarket front grille. Maybe we would see this new one with it soon if some enterprising fella gets it done.

The interior also gets new seat materials as well as a classier looking dashboard with that integrated infotainment screen in the middle.

All in all the new Ford Ranger is a nice upgrade over the new.

PRESS RELEASE
New Ford Ranger Is Most Capable, Powerful, Smartest Pickup in Malaysia

  • Ranger features a class-leading suite of safety features, including up to six airbags, and driver assistance technologies like Lane Keeping Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control and Electronic Stability Control

  • Upgraded diesel powertrains make the new Ranger quieter, up to 12 percent more fuel-efficient and even more capable than before

  • Best-in-class payload and water-wading make Ranger Malaysia’s most capable pickup

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, 8 Oct. 2015 – Ford Motor Company and its local distributor Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC) today launched the tougher, smarter, more efficient new Ranger in Malaysia, which is available in Ford showrooms nationwide starting tomorrow.

The new Ranger sets a new benchmark in the pickup truck segment with an unmatched blend of capability, safety and advanced technology.

“True to our ‘Built Ford Tough’ heritage, the new Ranger offers more power and payload capacity than any other pickup in Malaysia. It’s also the only pickup to feature a range of new safe and smart technologies, and raises the level of refinement in the segment,” said David Westerman, managing director, Malaysia and Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Ford Motor Company.

The Ranger’s suite of new technologies are complemented by a stylish, smart and functional new interior, as well as best-in-class water-wading, towing and payload capabilities.

Under the hood, significant improvements in Ford’s latest generation 3.2-litre Duratorq five-cylinder and 2.2-litre Duratorq four-cylinder TDCi diesel engines help the new Ranger deliver up to 12 percent better fuel-efficiency.

“We know that Malaysian drivers want the ruggedness of a truck and the comfort of a passenger vehicle, and we’re confident the new Ranger offers them this versatility, helping them achieve more, whether at work or with their family,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, managing director, Sime Darby Auto Connexion.

Capability and refinement
With a class-leading ability to wade through water up to 800mm deep, and 230mm of ground clearance, the new Ranger is the most capable pickup in Malaysia. Thanks to a 28-degree approach angle and 25-degree departure angle, the new Ranger was designed and engineered to handle even the most extreme terrains with ease.

An electronically controlled transfer case allows drivers in 4x4 models to shift on the fly from 4x2 to 4x4 high with a knob on the centre console. For low-speed torque or additional downhill braking, drivers can also engage low-range 4x4 gearing, while an electronic locking rear differential helps to improve traction in difficult conditions. These off-road strengths are matched by towing capability of up to 3,500 kg and exceptional payload capacity of up to 1,200kg.

The Ranger achieves all this with a level of refinement not usually seen in the pickup truck segment. While the current Ranger already sets the standard for ride and handling, Ford engineers fine-tuned its suspension for additional comfort and even better handling.

The driving experience is further enhanced by an electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system, which provides precise steering with a natural and confident feel. With EPAS, steering is light and manageable for low-speed manoeuvring, such as parking, and precise at higher speeds – with assistance varying as necessary based on speed, steering wheel angle, cornering forces and acceleration or deceleration.

Powerful and more fuel efficient
The new Ranger’s impressive power, capability, and payload and towing capacity are made possible thanks to powerful and efficient engines paired to either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.

For maximum power and torque for heavy-duty towing, Ford is offering the latest generation of its globally proven 3.2-litre Duratorq five-cylinder TDCi diesel engine. Upgrades including an updated exhaust gas recirculation system help to improve fuel efficiency by up to 12 percent, while putting out a best-in-class 200 PS of power and 470 Nm of torque.

Customers can also choose the latest generation of Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq four-cylinder TDCi diesel engine, which delivers significantly improved fuel efficiency and refinement while providing 160 PS of power and 385 Nm of torque – an increase in both power and torque over the current 2.2-litre Ranger.

The smartest of its kind
Equipped with an array of smart technologies, the Ranger’s intuitive features make any task a breeze. The high performance WildTrak variant features SYNC 2, the latest generation of Ford’s in-car connectivity system that boasts an eight-inch colour touchscreen to operate phone, entertainment and climate control using a simple voice command system.

With Ford’s advanced hands-free technology, drivers are able to safely observe the rules of the road while staying connected. The popular XLT variant also features SYNC with a 4.2-inch display.

Another first-in-segment for the new Ranger is Ford’s exclusive MyKey system, which allows the programming of various features, such as setting the maximum speed limit, a seatbelt reminder and the maximum volume of the audio system.

A host of other convenient features have been designed with the driver in mind. The new Ranger is the only pickup in Malaysia to include audible parking sensors in both the front and rear. It also features Front and Rear Park Assist and a rear-view camera, which gives a clear view behind the vehicle and is especially handy when parking and hitching up a trailer.

Two other convenient features are a light installed in the cargo tray, which gives all the light needed to complete a job, and a 230-volt power socket that can be used to power a laptop computer anywhere, from a work site to a family road trip. Both handy features are exclusive to the Ranger in the pickup segment.

New advanced safety features
New advanced safety features and driver assist technologies help the driver stay in control, even in the toughest road conditions.

The Ranger’s reinforced safety cell is supplemented with the protection of frontal impact airbags for the driver and passenger in all variants, and a class-leading six airbag configuration in the WildTrak variant, which also features side and curtain airbags.

The Ranger also comes fitted with Forward Alert, a smart driver assistance feature that gives drivers a visual and audible warning if the vehicle in front gets too close.

In addition, the Wildtrak features Adaptive Cruise Control, an intelligent feature that uses radar sensors to detect traffic ahead, and automatically adjusts the cruise control speed to maintain a safe distance from the car in front.

Complementing this is Lane Keeping Aid, which uses a front-facing camera located behind the rear-view mirror to read lane markings and detect if the driver unintentionally leaves their lane. Lane Keeping Aid uses a smooth steering torque intervention to gently pull the driver back on course. If the driver continues to drift off course, Lane Departure Warning can warn the driver by vibrating the steering wheel.

Ford’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX child safety mounts also come standard, making Ranger the only pickup truck in the Malaysia to offer these two important safety features across all variants. ESC is an active safety system that improves driver control under all conditions and maximises vehicle traction and stability both on- and off-road, and automatically reduces engine torque and/or applies a braking force to individual wheels if it senses the vehicle is turning more or less than intended.

Other smart technologies across all variants include Hill Launch Assist – which holds the Ranger in place for up to three seconds when the driver removes their foot from the brake – Adaptive Load Control, which maximises control when carrying heavy loads, and Emergency Brake Assist.

Tough and modern design
The new Ranger’s bold, modern look lends it a powerful presence on the road, and immediately conveys a sense of capability. A more muscular hood flows into a strong new trapezoidal grille, while imposing projector headlamps make the truck instantly recognisable, with a bold, technical look.

The Ranger’s updated exterior design stays true to its purpose as a tough and dependable truck, while the stylishly sleek and modern interior, packed with an array of smart technologies, gives both driver and passengers much needed comfort and a sense of openness they expect from this large vehicle. While the interior is more car-like, the materials used are extremely practical and durable to handle the harsh life of a work truck.

From today until 11 October, customers can experience all the capabilities of the Ford Ranger for themselves at the ‘Tough Done Smarter Experiential Test Drive’. Each visitor will be paired with a professional driver, who will lead them through an exciting course that simulates tough driving environments, like wading through water and navigating steep terrain. A variety of the new Ranger’s features will be demonstrated, including driver assist technologies like the e-Locking Rear Differential, Hill Launch Assist, Hill Descent Control, and Forward Collision Warning, as well as Ford’s SYNC 2 connectivity system.

The ‘Tough Done Smarter Experiential Test Drive’ will be held at the Central Park Avenue outdoor area of the new wing (use the main entrance on the Ground Floor) at 1Utama Shopping Centre. No advance bookings required. Admission is free.

Pricing and Colours
Official pricing for the Ranger in Peninsular Malaysia includes the Ranger XL priced from RM91,588 on-the-road, the Ranger XLT priced from RM101,388 on-the-road, and the 3.2L Ranger WildTrak priced at RM132,188.
