More on Cell Phone and EMF Health Risks

For almost twenty years I have been writing about the risk of EMF and cell phone use to your health. This new study is of concern because we do know of the real impact of oxidation stress on the body.  Perhaps it is time to rethink your reliance on cell phones, tablets, and all microwave devices.
Cellphones cause oxidative stress, may up cancer risk
TEL AVIV, Israel, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- There  is considerable oxidative stress on the tissue and glands close to a cellphone when in use and this may increase cancer risk, Israeli
researchers say.

Dr. Yaniv Hamzany of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of  Medicine and the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department at the  Rabin Medical Center looked for clues in the saliva of cellphone users.

Since the cellphone is placed close to the salivary gland when in use, he and fellow researchers Raphael Feinmesser, Thomas Shpitzer, Dr. Gideon Bahar and Rafi Nagler of Tel Aviv University and Dr. Moshe Gavish  of the Technion in Haifa examined the saliva content of 20 heavy-user patients, defined as speaking on their phones for a minimum of 8 hours a  month.

Most participants speak much more, Hamzany said, as much as 30-40 hours a month. Their salivary content was compared to that of a control group, which consisted of deaf patients who either do not use a cellphone or use the device exclusively for sending text messages and other non-verbal functions.

The study, published in the journal Antioxidants and Redox Signaling,  found compared to the control group, the saliva of heavy users showed indications of higher oxidative stress -- a process that damages all aspects of a human cell, including DNA -- through the development of toxic peroxide and free radicals -- a major risk factor for cancer.

Although the study didn't uncover a conclusive "cause and effect" relationship between cellular phone use and cancer, the research adds to  the building evidence cellphone use might be harmful in the long term, the researchers said.

Digital Dementia

Can't say Natural Health News did not warn you it was coming

In 2004 I was teaching classes on the topic of EMF induced health risks.  Now we have more than enough proff and this is just one more fact of the problem.

Some teens in South Korea exhibiting 'digital dementia'
Published: June 26, 2013 at 8:51 AM

SEOUL, June 26 (UPI) -- Some teens in South Korea are exhibiting what is being described as "digital dementia," or deterioration of thinking and memory, a psychiatrist says.

Psychiatrist Kim Dae-jin at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital recently diagnosed a 15-year-old boy with symptoms of early onset dementia due to intense exposure to digital technology -- television, computer, smartphone and video games -- since age 5. He could not remember the six-digit keypad code to get into his own home and his memory problems were hurting his grades in school.

"His brain's ability to transfer information to long-term memory has been impaired because of his heavy exposure to digital gadgets," the psychiatrist told the Korea JoongAngDaily.com.

South Korea is highly wired -- 65 percent of teens have smartphones -- and doctors said they were finding a growing number of cases of memory problems, attention disorders and emotional flattening among children and teens who spent a lot of time Web searching, texting and using multimedia.

"Overuse of smartphones and game devices hampers the balanced development of the brain," said Byun Gi-won, who runs the Balance Brain Center in Seoul, which helps those with cognitive problems related to computers and smartphones.

Youth might be at more risk than adults because up to age 25, their brains are still developing.

"From the early 2000s, I've seen a drastic increase in patients with reduced memory spans, especially young people. When I looked at it, most of them were exposed to the heavy consumption of digital gadgets," Dr. Kim Young-bo at Gachon University Gil Medical Center's brain research institute in Incheon told the newspaper.

"The gadgets ease the burden of memorizing tedious information but if we don't use our brain functions, the overall cognitive skills of being aware and perception will ultimately decrease."

Better Let Go of that Cell Phone

Opinion: Cell Phone Health Risk?

Security concerns during the Cold War may have led to the generation of misinformation on the physiological effects of microwave radiation from mobile phones.

Natural Health News has over 100 posts about cell phone and health, use our search window to read more...
By Allan H. Frey | September 25, 2012
Recently, Congress tasked its investigative arm, the General Accountability Office (GAO), to consider the health risks of mobile phones and to report back to Congress. While a previous report published in May 2010 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that there was no evidence of increased health risk resulting from exposure to the radiofrequency (microwave) energy emitted by cell phones, the World Health Organization reported the following year that cell phone radiation may be carcinogenic. Also in 2011, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse published a paper in JAMA reporting that 50 minutes of cell phone use by people altered glucose metabolism in the part of the brain closest to where the cell phone antennas were located. This summer, the GAO completed the task and sent a report to Congress stating that the risks were unclear and deserved greater scrutiny from the government.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC)  “should formally reassess and, if appropriate, change its current RF energy (microwave) exposure limit and mobile phone testing requirements related to likely usage configurations, particularly when phones are held against the body,” the GAO wrote.
The controversy over whether the technology poses a risk to human health is substantial. And while much of science could be considered controversial, what has, and is, happening in microwave research is not a routine scientific dispute. Concerns about the health risks of cell phones, confusion regarding the evidence for or against such risks, and even misinformation in the scientific literature may all be collateral damage of the Cold War between the USSR and the United States. This was a time when the use of microwave-generating equipment, such as radar, was seen by some as critical to the security of the United States, and efforts were taken to ensure that such innovations were not suppressed by findings that suggested such technology to be unsafe.
Hiding data
During the Cold War, a group at Brooks Air Force Base (AFB) was tasked with reassuring residents when the Air Force wanted to install radar (microwaves) in their neighborhood. To meet that responsibility, the Brooks group hired contractors to write Environmental Impact Statements to justify the placing of the radars—an obvious conflict of interest. Even worse, when a scientist did publish findings that might indicate a risk, Brooks selected contractors to do experiments that suggested the scientist’s research was invalid or not relevant to the safety of Air Force radar.
For example, after my colleagues and I published in 1975 that exposure to very weak microwave radiation opens the regulatory interface known as the blood brain barrier (bbb), a critical protection for the brain, the Brooks AFB group selected a contractor to supposedly replicate our experiment. For 2 years, this contractor presented data at scientific conferences stating that microwave radiation had no effect on the bbb. After much pressure from the scientific community, he finally revealed that he had not, in fact, replicated our work. We had injected dye into the femoral vein of lab rats after exposure to microwaves and observed the dye in the brain within 5 minutes. The Brooks contractor had stuck a needle into the animals’ bellies and sprayed the dye onto their intestines. Thus it is no surprise that when he looked at the brain 5 minutes later, he did not see any dye; the dye had yet to make it into the circulatory system.
Another Brooks AFB responsibility that further incentivized the spreading of misinformation was to lead a lab on a classified microwave-bio weapons program. Competition between this effort and the microwave-bio research programs undoubtedly going on in other nations at the time would explain the Brooks group’s attempts to block and discredit unclassified research in the microwave area and the subsequent publication of the results: it did not want advances in knowledge to appear in the scientific literature where the USSR could benefit from it. This is not unlike the recent uproar over whether bird flu results should be published—or even done at all—because of the fear that they may help terrorists develop biological weapons.
Stalling funding
In addition to actively suppressing results of microwave-bio research, the Brooks group also attempted to block funding for such research in the first place—and largely succeeded. For example, after we and others published the first papers in the mid- to late-’70s showing that very low intensity microwaves could open the bbb, the Department of Defense (DOD) issued a report, written by a psychologist at a Kansas Veterans Administration hospital who was neither trained nor experienced in research on the bbb, that concluded “…if a real potential for catastrophic effects exists, it would be evident from the research already reported in the literature.” (An original draft of the report also noted that “DOD funding of research evaluating the effects of microwaves on the bbb should be of low priority,” though this statement was removed before the report was released to the public.)
Largely as a consequence of this report, funding for open microwave-bio research in the United States was essentially shut down. Several months after the report was released, I requested renewal of government funding, which in part supported research on the bbb. I received a letter stating that funding would not be granted unless I dropped the bbb part of the proposal. And in a September 1981 article in Microwave News, 2 years later, the editor wrote, “Surprisingly, no new [bbb] work was reported this year.”
Even now, the recent GAO report states, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) “is the only federal agency we interviewed that is directly funding ongoing studies on health effects of RF energy (microwave radiation) from mobile phone use.” And the NIH funded only one relevant completed experiment, by an in-house researcher, during the time the GAO did its assessment. For many years now most of the published microwave research—what little that has been done—has been conducted in other countries. And as I noted in a recent paper, many, if not most, of those have been epidemiological studies looking for health problems associated with outdated technologies that are not relevant to the phones used today or that will be used in the future.
Thus, the shutdown of normal open microwave research in the U.S. and the misinformation placed in the literature appears to be collateral damage of the actions of people who saw themselves as fighting a war. And since the research was not allowed to proceed in the normal fashion, we don’t have the set of data needed to determine if there is a health hazard of mobile phone use—and, if so, how serious the hazard is.  This suppression of research has now made hundreds of millions of people subjects in a grand experiment that may involve their health, without their informed consent, and the outcome of which can have substantial medical, legal, and economic consequences.

Give it up for Earth Day and Your Health

April 22, 2012 - Earth Day: A day without wireless

Wireless devices damage the environment in many different ways.

Wireless devices are energy hogs. For instance, it takes three times as much energy to make a simple phone call on a cellphone compared to a landline (http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2009/06/embodied-energy-of-digital-technology.html#more). Wireless internet access requires far more energy than fiber optic internet access. Fiber optic internet access to the premises is the state-of-the-art gold standard in broadband. Used with hardwired modems, it is the most energy efficient, highest speed, highest capacity, and most reliable option for broadband. Furthermore, it is safe and secure.
Use of energy-wasting wireless devices, therefore, accelerates the environmental damage caused by mountaintop removal coal mining (http://ilovemountains.org/), tar sands oil extraction (http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/03/canadian-oil-sands/kunzig-text), and fracking (http://www.gaslandthemovie.com/) because of their higher demand for electricity production.
As if this were not bad enough, the pulsed modulated microwave radiation utilized by wireless devices to communicate interferes with the navigational abilities of bees, birds, bats, and a variety of other creatures (http://www.hese-project.org/hese-uk/en/issues/nature.php?id=bees). One study linked nest proximity to cell phone antennas to significantly poorer reproductive success for white storks, including incomplete nest construction, absence of chicks, and increased chick death (http://www.livingplanet.be/Balmori_EBM_2005.pdf). Laboratory studies show it causes various developmental abnormalities and decreases fertility, suggesting other species likely experience decreased reproductive success (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19264463).
It’s not just the rest of the planet that regrets the human love affair with wireless. Many humans are experiencing health problems from exposure to the pulsed modulated microwave radiation utilized by cellphones, WiFi, baby monitors, and utility smart meters (a.k.a. AMR or transmitting meters) etc.
Many humans experience dizziness, heart arrhythmias, headaches, poor sleep, low energy, inability to concentrate, short-term memory problems, facial flushing and skin rash when exposed to radiation from wireless devices (http://www.magdahavas.com/?s=bradycardia) . These are just a few of the symptoms of radiofrequency sickness (http://www.electricalpollution.com). Radiofrequency sickness develops when people are over-exposed to radiofrequency radiation, which includes the pulsed modulated microwave radiation inherent in wireless devices.
Exposure to radiofrequency radiation has also been linked to an increased risk for cancer, including lymphoma, leukemia, brain tumor (cellphones), melanoma, parotid gland tumors, and breast cancer (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20693976). In fact, in spite of incredible industry pressure, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified radiofrequency radiation as a class 2B possible human carcinogen (http://www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/pr/2011/pdfs/pr208_E.pdf). Had the IARC panel been allowed to consider all the evidence, Dr. Franz Adlkofer, former executive director of the VERUM Foundation for Behavior and Environment stated that, “the classification likely would have changed from ‘possibly’ carcinogenic to ‘probably.’”, in an October 2011 presentation at the Harvard Law School (http://www.law.harvard.edu/news/2011/11/18_safra-center-cellphone-radiation-corruption.html).
The use of wireless devices has increased markedly in recent years and so have the resultant radiation exposures. The pulsed modulated microwave signal utilized by wireless devices is extremely biologically active, intrinsically unnatural, and not regulated to prevent biological effects (http://www.emrpolicy.org/litigation/case_law/docs/noi_epa_response.pdf) These ubiquitous consumer devices have never been safety tested for animals or humans and no post-market surveillance is in place.
Show respect for the Earth. Take Earth Day to turn off your wireless devices to save energy and out of consideration for animals, plants, and fellow humans.

Chipping you with drugs

This last week several articles hit the news about the use of microchips to administer drugs.  Some people may think this is a great advance in pharmaceutical science but I got shivers reading it.  Worse was thinking about the consequences from the well known risk of EMF exposure and tumours from pet chips.

What to me is worse is the first trial was designed to deliver a drug prescribed mainly to women, although men get it as well: The osteoporosis drugs.

Osteoporosis drugs have many drawbacks.  The same drugs have many risks including the risk of very bad fractures and having your jaw bone eaten away (necrosis).  For the most part the drugs are fluoride based and cause the osteoclasts in the bone health cycle to be stopped. In this study, however parathyroid hormone was used with the rationale that people do not like to get injections.

No one seems to think about the drug risks let alone the chip risk or more exposure to EMF that we do know causes cancer.
'Pharmacy on a chip' gets closerBy Jonathan Amos
The futuristic idea that microchips could be implanted under a patient's skin to control the release of drugs has taken another step forward.
US scientists have been testing just such a device on women with the bone-wasting disease osteoporosis.
The chip was inserted in their waist and activated by remote control.
In his article Amos did note that one device failed. In the report of the study the information about the failures in the very small sample size used was not noted.

Serious concerns must have been ignored by the "scientists".

What does happen if the device fails?
What does happen if the device administers all the doses at one time?
What does happen if the device explodes?
What does happen if the person with the device gets a cancerous tumour? (This is a foreign body.)
What does happen if other environmental factors constantly ping this device?

Many more questions must be asked.

And what if this is a way to track your every move?

Read up on risks of microchips for companion animals, this is relevant information for people chipping too -  http://www.chipmenot.org/microchiprisks.htm

Hormone Disruption: Fluoride and Your Wireless Device

RE - http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0009912011027330

It shows that long term exposure (six years) to both cellphones and their base stations can alter human hormone profiles.

The most significant (which the authors describe as highly significant in the text) are their effects on the thyroid hormones, which show a marked reduction over this period. Although the authors do not say it (I suspect that they dare not if they want to get their work published) this would result in hypothyroidism, the most important symptoms of which are fatigue and obesity.

WEEP reader comments:

If cellphone exposure is combined with a fluoridated water supply, the low thyroid outcome is even more likely.

See this history of the fluorine/iodine antagonism connection, and the use of fluorine-based drugs to treat overactive thyroid.

http://poisonfluoride.com/pfpc/html/thyroid_history.html

Please join the spreading campaign to remove fluoride (from toxic-waste source) out of drinking water.

http://cof-cof.ca/hydrofluorosilicic-acid-origins/

'This water-based “wet scrubber” hydrofluorosilicic acid, containing the contaminants, is then taken out of the chimneys and stored in open-air cooling lakes, further exposed to airborne contaminants. Industry produces millions of gallons of this liquid hazardous waste. It costs thousands of dollars per ton to properly neutralize and dispose of hydrofluorosilicic acid, therefore, industry would rather just sell it to you as “product”.'

http://cof-cof.ca/top-ten-arguments-against-fluoridation/

And then if you are exposed to mercury too... and then the EMF shuts down detox, well we have got to do something about the use of these toxic substances.  Martin Weatherall, WEEP.
