What's Up at Cargill

To me it is unconscionable to market these manufactured sweetener products as they are man made and not in the whole, natural form.  What bothers me more is the lack of responsibility shown by the USA national nurse practitioner (NP) association that has Cargill's stevioside extract and erythritol combination product, 'Truvia', sponsoring an upcoming meeting/conference.
As a long time NP I personally do not use any of these products because I know the science behind the ingredients and I know they can cause adverse effects.

Now Cargill takes it one step further with its joint plan to engage in making a fermented "rebiana" with Evolva.  This manufactured in the lab/factory "stevia" is made with yeast and low cost plant sugars.
Stevia extracts – without agriculture?
Evolva and Cargill join forces on fermentation-derived extracts -
Swiss firm Evolva Holding has partnered with Cargill to develop and commercialise stevia extracts derived from a fermentation process, rather than through traditional extraction from the stevia plant.
Not only should you know what is in your food and how it is made, you may wish to consider that there may be adverse effects. (See "Problems with new sweetener" below.)

Many years ago now stevia was blocked by the FDA to allow more room for aspartame. While stevia had been used for eons in South America and Japan as a sweetener is seems as if it wasn't welcome here in the US.

The answer to this is that the sugar alcohol based sweeteners do cause gastrointestinal disturbances and this is one reason why we do not recommend nay products containing a blend of chemically altered stevia. Problems ...

When Antibiotics Stop Working

In 1993 I worked on an approach to drop a direct hit on a rampage of flesh eating bacteria in Seattle.  Since that time we have seen over an over again more and more reports on ever increasing resistant bacteria.

This article below is one of more than 30 from Natural Health News dating back to 2004 -

Since few have been interested in my approach over these years, I felt it imperative with the new outbreak of what is termed "CRE", to repost on this issue.

The antibiotic being relied on for CRE in hospital or long term care centers is an old one which seems to have some very serious risks to health as well.

Of course little has been said about the impact of cell phones and the static electric field they create that carry bacteria and viruses from room to room.

Less has been said about the closed mindedness in mainstream medicine about any other way to address it than antibiotics.

We should be doing far better and we should have people willing to get their head out of the sand and develop more creative problem solving approaches.

I did.

I just want someone with courage to step up to the plate and test my method.

They might be amazed!

Everyone Needs to Improve Their Liver Health and Function

I found this article on line and with Spring coming along quickly I thought it would be informative.

Top Recommendation for Optimum Liver Function and Top 10 Herbals for Liver Cleansing

One of the most important organs in the body is your liver. The liver has many functions such as excretion of hormones, drugs and cholesterol, metabolizing protein, fat and carbohydrates, blood detoxification and purification (every minute your liver filters more than one litter of blood), activation of enzymes and storing vitamins, minerals and glycogen. Beside all of these, the liver works with other organs in the body to process and digest food properly. Your liver can heal and recover itself quickly but it can also get damaged quickly. Statistics show that more than 25% of Americans have fatty livers.

-You can improve your liver by consuming organic diet, avoiding alcohol, antibiotics and antacids, consuming less animal products, less of foods that have bad cholesterol, saturated fats and carbohydrates; avoiding toxic foods, additives, preservatives and genetically modified foods.

-Based on a study by University of Australia, genetically modified wheat can stimulate enzyme suppresser. The enzyme suppressor might attack enzymes in the body that produces glycogen; a hormone that regulates the metabolism of blood sugar. This can lead to liver failure or even death in some cases.

-Start your morning with drinking water. Drink lots of water and if you can add a squeezed organic lime to your water it would be great. Avoid sugary drinks, energy drinks, caffeine and sodas. Drinking water, preferably spring water cleanses body and gets rid of toxins.

Phosphorus and Cost Containment

Some NIH material is below on phosphorus.  Many years ago now some one at Medicare decided you could save on health care costs if you deleted this test from the blood chemistry panel.  Fact is that this test is really necessary to make sure you have some idea of how calcium is functioning and your level of bone health.  Labs charge in the area of $120 extra for this test depending on the lab and where you live.  Not much to be said for contining health costs.
Phosphorus is a treat minerals found in some foods such as Cereal Grains, Pasta, Pumpkin, Squash, and Watermelon Seeds. It plays an important role in proper cell functioning, regulation of calcium, strong bones and teeth, and for making ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and also the phospholipids that form all cell membranes(1a).

Phosphorus and bone health
Phosphorus, which constitutes hydroxyapatite with calcium, is a important component of bone. It is considered that there is no need to worry about the lack of phosphorus in the ordinary dietary habits, because a various of foods contain phosphorus.  There is a report of parathyroid hormone and bone resorption markers are increased in case of low calcium/phosphorus intake ratio. In the Dietary reference intakes for Japanese, 2010, shows 3,000 mg/day as a tolerable upper intake level of phosphorus. Some issues such as the intake ratio of calcium to phosphorus and an effect of organic phosphorus and inorganic phosphorus remain to be solved.  SOURCE

FLU Shot and the Elderly: Nothing New

You will have heard in recent days that the spin on the recent flu vaccine failure, especially with the elderly, is making the rounds on almost all media outlets.  When I first heard this I thought where have these people been and why aren't they reporting with real facts and connected reporting of the same issue for many years past.
February 21, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) — It turns out this year's flu shot is doing a startlingly dismal job of protecting senior citizens, the most vulnerable age group.
The vaccine is proving only 9 percent effective in people 65 and older against the harsh strain of the flu that is predominant this season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. SOURCE
I guess it is the continuation of the promotion of confusion or just plain not wanting you to know.

In general the issue of vaccinating Elders and getting poor results is not new.  And if it is well established that the effectiveness is  just not there then why continue the practice?
"... the vaccine's ability to keep the elderly alive was, "if present at all...very small and statistically non-significant and may simply be a healthy- user artifact that they were unable to identify".
" If an elderly person is not in good health, flu vaccination does little to help ward off lung infections, Dutch investigators report."
" In a review of 64 studies in 98 flu seasons, For elderly living in nursing homes, flu shots were non-significant for preventing the flu. For elderly living in the community, vaccines were not (significantly) effective against influenza, ILI or pneumonia.
Reference: “Vaccines for preventing influenza in the elderly.” The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. 3(2006)."
NB: Also note that water fluoridation suppresses immunity and is having the effect of limiting vaccine effectiveness at an average rate of 50%.  Funny how this number is similar to the reported diminished effectiveness in the 2012 vaccine.

An Apple a Day Really Did the Trick

4 September, 2008

While many foods contain quercetin, the apple is an excellent source of this substance, and provides fiber too.

The apple contains many nutrients for health.

Substance Found In Fruits And Vegetables Reduces Likelihood Of The Flu

ScienceDaily (2008-09-03) -- Mice given quercetin, a naturally occurring substance found in fruits and vegetables, were less likely to contract the flu. The study also found that stressful exercise increased the susceptibility of mice to the flu, but quercetin canceled out that negative effect. Quercetin, a close chemical relative of resveratrol, is present in a variety of fruits and vegetables, including red onions, grapes, blueberries, tea, broccoli and red wine. ...  read full article
