MINI John Cooper Works receives “sport auto award 2015”

The current MINI John Cooper Works recently came as top choice in the Sport Auto magazine's annual readers' choice category for Imported Small Car Category. For those who are unaware, Sport auto is a German automobile magazine. More like THE German auto magazine to read when it comes to performance cars.

Sport Auto magazine is one of the most referred to magazine as the magazine publishes its "Supertest" of cars, featuring the laptime of the car(s) the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The laps are usually driven by the former editor-in-chief Horst von Saurma. The magazine also runs a challenge for the fastest lap time driven with a car that is German road legal (TÜV) inclusive of even the tyres and that the car is also registered in Germany.

So I suppose this is a big thing over in Europe. Very prestigious to a certain extent. The MINI JCW in some ways deserves this. Its handling is now backed up by power these days. Previously it was only a 1.6liter turbocharged engine but now, a 2.0liter turbocharged petrol engine giving 231hp and oodles more torque over the 400cc smaller engine. Add juicy bits that make it into the JCW special and it would be a fun cocktail. This is what makes the JCW version of the MINI Cooper S the one to get.

PRESS RELEASE
MINI John Cooper Works receives “sport auto award 2015"
Munich. The MINI John Cooper Works continues its series of successes at the annual “sport auto” magazine readers’ choice and takes first place in the importer small car category. Thanks to its outstanding performance and properties, the MINI John Cooper Works has always had an exceptional standing among the competition.

The MINI John Cooper Works is driven by the most powerful engine ever installed in one of the British premium brand’s production models, the 2 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology generating 170 kW/231 hp (fuel consumption according to EU: 6.7 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 165 g/km). The top athlete’s technology for the engine, suspension and aerodynamics derives directly from motor racing and defines its exclusive properties and its orientation towards extreme driving fun. Its distinctive character is emphasised by model-specific exterior and interior design features. In conjunction with the 6-speed manual transmission, the MINI John Cooper Works accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds reaching a top speed of 246 km/h. It is also optionally available with the 6-speed Steptronic sports transmission.

The “sport auto award” has been issued since 1980 and ranks among the most longest-standing automobile awards. This year 13,601 readers voted in 30 series production car categories and 10 tuning model classes.

2016 Mini Clubman - A Mini 5 Door Station Wagon in not so many words

The new Mini Clubman has recently been previewed and launched. I think this is a useful Mini Clubman or Mini Shooting Brake (or Wagon) compared to the earlier one which I was first familiar with - the one with the one rear door located at the right side of the car. It wasn't an issue if it were left-hand drive but if the car were in right-hand drive form, it would meant that the people at the rear would also step out into traffic unlike the the left hand driver cars' rear passengers would alight onto the sidewalk.  I didn't quite fancy it. Imagine your toddler exiting the car on that not very safe side of the road if you drive a right hand drive Clubman. This 2016 Clubman has fixed it all by offering proper doors at the rear. You got to thank the normal Mini 5 door for this.

So this new one is a good thing. The Clubman is now a proper 5 door station wagon. It is longer than the standard Mini 5 door but not by much. I don't actually know whether you're just paying a bit more for the extra length and the extra height at the rear to carry only slightly more stuff. Actually I don't know. People who buy Minis aren't into utilitarian thought. More about style over anything actually.
