Ebola Can Go Airborne - Russell Blaylock MD
“It's a viral organism and at first it was only spread by fluid, body fluids,” he said. “So you had to come in contact with the body or get some of the fluids, serum or blood, in order to contract it. It was not airborne.

"There's evidence now from a Canadian study that in fact it may be airborne and what they do is they separate animals and they infect one group of animals and see if it will spread to the isolated other ones that are exposed to the air, and it did spread," Blaylock said. "Now the U.S. doctors are saying that they don't believe that, but the  Canadian study was very well done and it's sort of irrefutable evidence.”

Quarantine is the only sure way to keep it from spreading, Blaylock said. But in Africa, where it has reached a public health crisis, people were not quarantined soon enough, allowing the disease to rapidly spread.

“When we first had Ebola appear in Africa, they did a pretty good job of quarantining and it didn't really spread,” he said. “But this time, unfortunately,
they let it get out. Families were invading areas that they were told not to go into because they wanted to see their loved ones the last time, and they underestimated the virus itself because they were wearing these HazMat suits and protective gear, but the virus still spread to them.”

Blaylock said it is highly risky for the government to ship Americans who contracted Ebola while working in Africa back to the United States for treatment.

“One of the big mistakes they made is shipping these people back to the United States because they can share the virus two months later,”  he said. “A carried situation, for instance, in the semen it's alive for two months after the patient recovers.”

Blaylock, author of the “Blaylock Wellness Report,” said he does not trust the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to protect the American public.

“I don't have confidence in the CDC,” he said. “They have numerous times shown that their interest is in money from different sources.  They've made so many errors; they've shipped out a dangerous virus to researchers from the USDA that could have caused an epidemic of Bird Flu. So I don't have a lot of confidence in the CDC.”

On the upside, according to Blaylock, should Ebola make its way to the United States, it is not likely to have the same 90 percent-100 percent mortality rate it does in Africa.

“Almost all Africans are infected with parasites, parasites suppress the immune system,” he said. “So these people have poor dietary supplementation which makes their immune system weak. They have the parasitic infections which inhibit the immune system's ability to fight viruses”

He suggests D3 vitamin supplements and a low-sugar diet since sugar is proven to suppress the immune system.

Ebola and the Marburg Virus + Vitamin C
the 2005 epidemic in Angola which was first referred to as an Ebola like virus has now been called the Marburg Virus.  It does not make a difference from the point of view of treatment with massive doses of intravenous sodium ascorbate.  Both diseases kill by way of free radicals which can be neutralized by massive doses of sodium ascorbate intravenously.

A virus by its very nature mutates...

Recall that 1996 book published by my colleague of many years titled "Aids, Ebola, and Emerging Viruses"?

FYI: The US CDC is the patent holder for the ebola virus.

See this page I developed years ago when the SARS outbreak had everyone in a terror, or so the CDC and FDA hoped.  http://www.leaflady.org/immune_system_health.htm

Part 1 - A different way of looking at Ebola

The growing epidemic of Ebola in Africa is a big cause for concern among the general public. The media coverage of this aggressive illness is not much help. Though there is a truth to the aggressive and disturbing nature of Ebola, there is some hope nestled in our growing understanding of the infection. Although it has high mortality but we have to look at folks who survived, what was the protective mechanism in these folks? In this article we will look at the nature of this virus and what we can learn about protecting ourselves.

First recorded Ebola outbreak originated in Democratic Republic of Congo in the year 1976.[1] Since then , there have been over 20 outbreaks in various countries in Central and Western Africa. The mortality rate among infected persons during these outbreaks has been 50-90%.[1] High mortality rate has made Ebola virus one of the most aggressive infectious agent known to people. The recent outbreak in West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria has been the largest in the short history since our introduction to this virus.[2]

Ebola is relatively rare infection among humans. Fruit bats of Africa are believed to the original host of the Ebola virus. Human infections like occur due to direct contact with blood or other body secretions of infected animals. “In Africa, infection has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead or in the rainforest.”[1] Within the community, the infection spreads via human-to-human transmission. The routes of transmission are still limited to direct contact with blood and other body secretions of the infected or dead victims of Ebola.[3]

The Ebola Infection
Upon contraction of the Ebola virus, the illness begins with flu-like symptoms, body aches, fatigue, headaches, and fever. Some may also develop a bruising rash on the skin, described as a hemorrhagic rash. In the later stages, these individuals develop loss of appetite, severe stomach ache, diarrhea with or without bleeding, and vomiting.[4] Hemorrhage and loss of blood are the most devastating aspects of the infection and often result in fatality. The infection runs its course within 14-21 days.[5] During  this time, if the virus does not kill the infected person,  the immune system of the person is able to overcome the disease.

Researchers have been able to shed a lot of light on how the Ebola virus affects the biology of the infected person. This may also shed some light on ways to defend against the infection. Ebola virus contains two very similar glycol-proteins (GPs); which form the interactive protein structure that appears on the surface of the virus.[5] The GPs bind to the receptor proteins located on the host human cells on various organs. Cells of the gastrointestinal tract, bloodstream, and immune system are the first to be affected by viral invasion. After invading the cell, virus over-takes the cell’s protein production and depletes the cell. Infection of circulating immune cells like monocytes and dendritic cells weakens the immune cells; because they are circulatory, these cells carry the virus to all parts of the body.[6] Viral activity also manipulates these cells to create high amount of inflammatory signaling molecules. In response to inflammation,
endothelial cells of the blood vessels become more porous causing bleeding problems. The worst effects of the infection are seen on circulatory and immune system of the infected person. These effects result in the symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, hemorrhage, and immune debility experienced by Ebola patients.

The Role of the Immune system and the Survival Factor
One arm of Ebola’s fatality weakens the immune system making it difficult for the body to mount a response. However, the body and the immune system are persistent for survival – research looking at the immune function of survivors and nonsurvivors is teaching us about nature’s best strategy to overcome. The first defensive response of the immune system is to recognize and bind to the viral proteins. This is a double-edged sword, because this is also the easiest way for the cell to become infected. The surveillance immune cells (B-cells) bind to virus and produce IgM antibodies to recruit other immune cells to neutralize the virus.[7] Antiviral T-cell lymphocytes become involved; these produce IgG antibodies that reinforce the defensive action against the virus. Production of IgM and IgG antibodies represent virus-specific signals for the immune system to recognize and eliminate the virus.

Studies that compared immune systems of survivors with the immune function of non-survivors of Ebola illustrate the differences in immune activity. Among survivors of Ebola infections during a 1996 outbreak in Gabon, Sudan; it was found that these individuals had greater concentration of IgM and IgG antibodies7    and also had more sustained antiviral T-cell response. Comparatively, all of these were deficient among the non-survivors. The immune system of the non-survivors was slower to respond, thus sustained greater loss due to death of immune cells – this resulted in ultimate fatality.[7]

In a study of 2000-2001 Ebola outbreak in Gulu, Uganda; researchers looked at similar parameter of the immune system[8]. In this study, the researcher looked at the immune responses of blood samples from survivor and non-survivors of this outbreak. It was discovered that survivors had developed antibodies against various proteins on the virus. These antibodies were still active in the survivors after the infection had passed. In a 12 year follow-up study with the survivors, the immune systems still carried IgM antibodies against the viral proteins.[9] These individual still produced a significant immune response to injected viral proteins over a decade after exposure to the illness.

This group of studies and others like them are recognizing the central role of the immune system in survival. For an infection like Ebola, which has no apparent clinical cure, natural reinforcement of the immune system may represent an oasis of hope in the desert of fear and panic.

Prevention is the best treatment: As far as we know, this virus is transmitted through bodily fluids and it is not air borne. You are not going to contract this virus in flying or sitting next to Ebola infected person, unless come in contact with blood, vomitus, stool, urine or get injected with infected needle. Proper infection control techniques will be highly effective in controlling this disease. Even once you are in contact with these bodily fluids, washing with soap can be highly effective in warding off this infection, unless you have open wounds on your skin.

Natural strategies for a resilient immune system
Healthy nutrition is the best way to keep your immune system boosted. Diets that are high in a variety of vegetables and fruits are most beneficial. Fruits and vegetables are packed with naturally occurring vitamins and minerals that support healthy enzymatic function in the body. A review of research indicates that fruits and vegetables in the diet support antioxidant, detoxification, immune activity and hormonal metabolism in the body.[10] Dietary mushrooms are source of polysaccharides like β-glucan, that are directly modulate activity of the immune system.[11] An average healthy diet must include up to 4-5 servings of a variety of vegetables every day; and 1-2 servings of fresh fruits every day.

Exercise is an important foundation of health. Exercising supports the immune system through its physiological and mechanical effects on the body. Exercise can help flush out infective agents and cancer-causing toxins by promoting elimination of waste through urine and sweat.[12] It improves circulation of in general – promoting circulation of immune cells and antibodies through all parts of the body. In a research study, moderate exercise performed over 12-15 weeks reduced the number of sick days by half.[13] On the other hand; excessive rigorous exercise can weaken the body’s defenses. Moderate exercise includes, 30-40 minutes of brisk walk 4-5 days every week.

Sleep is one the most healing aspects of daily life. It is the one time when the anabolic (building) functions in the body outpace the catabolic (destructive) functions in the body. Undisturbed sleep can be one of the most regenerative activities that an individual can have every day. Sleep is part of the sleep-wake cycle that helps to balance the circadian rhythm of hormones and physiological activity of the body. This aspect of sleep has a powerful regulatory effect on immune function of the individual;[14] More specifically, sleep has been shown to improve communication between immune cells and improve immunological memory.

Stress is a natural part of life that is an essential motivator survival and change. However, excessive stress and inadequate stress management can become detrimental to health. Just like a stretched rubber-band loses its elasticity over time, a stressed system loses its immunity as well. Chronic stress can make a weak immune system even weaker, increasing susceptibility to disease.[15] Simple stress relieving activity like exercise, deep breathing, yoga, and joyful recreational activity must be incorporated into daily life to induce effective transition into a relaxed state.

Herbal support is the next line of protection that adds to the benefits of daily activity. Ayurveda offers a wide range of herbs called rasayana. According to the Ayurvedic theory, rasayana herbs are rejuvenative medicines that promote health at all tissue levels of the body. The traditional model of tissue formation teaches us that the components of blood related to nourishment like plasma (rasa) and red blood cells (rakta) are formed first. On the other hand, Ojas which represents components of the hormonal system, immune cells, etc. are formed at the end of the process of tissue formation. Rasayana herbs have the capacity to support healthy metabolism at all levels tissue formation – thus, promoting nourishment and protection.

Amla, Emblica officinalis, is one of the more popular rasayana. It has been used as part of a traditional formula called Chyawanprash for over 2000 years. Amla is a very useful antioxidant and liver supportive herb. Antioxidant function of this herb has a regenerative effect on the immune system.[16] The liver supportive activity of Amla has been shown to restore anti-oxidant system of the liver and restore elevated liver enzymes to normal. It has been observed to protect liver damage due to toxins and protect development of liver cancer.17,18 Liver is the primary detoxing organ of the body. Optimal function of the liver reduces toxic burden and allows the immune system to deal with real threats.

Ashwagandha, Withania somnifera, is an excellent adrenal supportive herb that has tonifying effect on the whole hormone system. Ashwagandha contains glycoside compound of Ashwagandha have been observed to reduce stress on the adrenal gland and stimulate the thyroid gland activity.[19] This demonstrates the anti-stress activity and pro-metabolic activity of Ashwagandha. Both of these reinforce immune activity of the individual, indicated by the mobilization and activation of immune cells.[20] Ashwagandha has also been observed to reverse immune-suppression caused by steroid use.[21] Ashwagandha herb is one of the best hormonal and immune modulator offered by Ayurvedic tradition. In 1903 plague epidemic, people who were given Ashwagandha survived. Ashwagandha does not have strong antibacterial properties, but it does stimulate host defense.

Turmeric, Curcuma longa, this common household spice is emerging as a miraculous anti-inflammatory agent. While healthy, controlled inflammation is a part of a normal immune response; excessive inflammation causes tissue damage and depletion of the immune system. Turmeric contains the compound curcumin, which is recognized for helping control inflammation as effectively as Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). In animal studies, Curcumin has been observed to be equal Ibuprofen to prevent inflammatory plaque formation in Alzheimer disease.[22] Curcumin does this without the risk of toxicity seen with NSAIDs. Additionally, Curcumin’s effectiveness has been demonstrated in chronic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and other metabolic diseases.23,24,25 When unnecessary inflammation is brought under control this takes a lot of stress from immune system and the adrenal gland – this also protects from inflammatory tissue damage.
Altogether, managing inflammation in this way makes the immune system more efficient.

Guduchi, Tinospora cordifolia, is a versatile herb for supporting immune and liver function. Guduchi is traditionally used in wide variety of conditions for its combination of anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune modulating and liver supportive actions.[26] A review of research indicates that Guduchi produces Its anti-inflammatory effect through blocking the effect of inflammatory signals like histamine, bradykinin, etc.[27] Immune supportive activity of this herb is demonstrated in animal studies by elevation and circulation of B-cell and T-cell lymphocytes, which perform surveillance and elimination of infective agents.28,29 In a demonstration of its dual functions as liver and immune support, Guduchi treated amoebiasis in animals by reversing liver abscess.[29]

Conclusion
In the midst of worries of a global epidemic, natural medicine offers some very helpful and applicable strategies for protecting oneself. These are simple life-promoting daily activities that help the individual conform with nature. Blending with nature in this way is what allowed our ancestors to survive when there were no drugs available. Following the nature’s wisdom is the ideal way to bring balance and health; this is the first step to effective prevention.

Part 2 -

Nutritional Law and Medicine
It has long been apparent that an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases is common in malnourished human populations. This has traditionally been viewed as simply a consequence of the fact that the immune system must be maintained by adequate nutrition in order to function optimally. Only recently has data begun to accumulate in support of the idea that nutritional factors may sometimes have a direct effect on pathogens, and that passage through nutritionally deficient hosts may facilitate evolutionary changes in infectious agents.[1]
The mechanisms of cell death, apoptosis, necrosis, pyroptosis, or autophagic cell death depends on a cells ability to cope with the conditions to which it is exposed. The adaptive capacity of a cell ultimately determines its fate when it comes under stress. The strength or what we can call a cells adaptive capacity is directly related to nutritional sufficiency and proper cellular respiration that removes all toxins and wastes through the cell wall.
Patients who are critically ill with Ebola have high nutritional requirements that need to be addressed. Nutritional feeding is critical to patient outcome. Natural Allopathic Medicine takes a different approach than contemporary medicine. Instead of using toxic pharmaceuticals that diminish the immune system by further driving down nutritional status we use we treat and cure through the fulfillment of nutritional law.
We do not need to develop expensive drugs waiting while millions potentially die. Right in the emergency room are already excellent medicines that doctors are familiar with that save lives every day. Nutritional medicine is safer and more effective than pharmaceutical medicine. Just ask an emergency-room or intensive-care-ward doctor right after he has injected magnesium chloride or sodium bicarbonate to save someone’s life.
With Ebola raging in Africa and threatening the rest of the world it is inexcusable that medical and health officials continue to frown on the use of un-patentable medicines like those mentioned above. The substances in the Natural Allopathic protocol for Ebola offer a power unequalled in the world of medicine that we can harness to save many lives of people infected with Ebola. However, some people would enjoy seeing millions if not billions of people die to reduce population down to a more manageable level. Others would rather stick with their professional pride or obedience to medical officials and let patients die than even think of what should work to decrease the death rate from Ebola.  It really would be a shame if the medical world stands by and lets this pandemic take hold.
The secrets of emergency room and intensive care medicine holds the key to resolving Ebola. Magnesium salts, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), iodine, selenium and vitamin C are concentrated nutritional medicinals that have been used in the direst of medical circumstances. They are widely available, inexpensive and safe to administer round the clock at high dosages.
The core of the Natural Allopathic protocol redefines the way emergency room and intensive care should be practiced on Ebola patients with proven fast-acting, safe, concentrated and mostly injectable nutritional medicines. If the Ebola infection truly gets out of hand, it is comforting for parents to know that they can legally administer these same medicinals if infected people are treated at home. All of the Natural Allopathic Medicines can be also taken orally or used transdermally (topically) to almost the same effect if treatment is started early enough.
People who either choose home care or have no other option need to treat everyone in the home at the same time whether demonstrating symptoms or not. Waiting for the contagion to spread inside a family, or with health care professionals in hospitals and clinics, is unwise. The main idea is to get out in front of the virus.

EPA: Out of Control

Cleanup to Start in East Fork Ninemile; Watch for Traffic

Here is an example of still another toxic waste dump being created in the epicenter of the Bunker Hill Superfund Site. Technically it may be a mile or so removed from the “BOX” or original 21 sq. miles. Nevertheless the message is one of a warning to residents who may be living in the area to watch out for heavy equipment as well as other risks to those who live in the area. Every indication is revealed that dangerous contamination is being dug up and transferred to another location close by.

The part about “securing” the lead and heavy metals, which amount to God only knows how many years and dump truck loads is being place in a smaller, managed location to keep it from being moved downstream? Everything runs down stream whether it be isolated i.e. out of the radar of affected citizens visibility but not out of the danger of  fugitive windblown dust.

Why was permanent waste disposal never discussed to the public?

In addition our office has firsthand knowledge of how the public comment period went to folks in that area and a copy of the comments to the two comments that were received. This hardly equates to the CERCLA law of informing citizens of the toxic waste dumps and other major decisions of Region X. One from  a man who lives on 02, oxygen, 24/7.

It is clear that this is a new repository, the heavy equipment, contractors, workers, transporting of hundreds maybe thousands of dump trucks of toxic waste is to go on for several years. Not to mention that Woodland Park area is the location of a large low income public housing complex where many families with children live, it is also a residential neighborhood with narrow driving passage ways.

LOOK FOR Old Mission State Park on Map, repository is greyish area to the NE across the road. Wetland is to the left of the dump site, river is to the south of the Mission.

It is safe to say that permanent waste disposal was never considered. The copy of the response to the two public comments from reg. ten includes mention of the justifying of this site so as to “ultimately avoid transporting of waste through Wallace” So want rational is being used here for the approval of tons of toxic cleanup waste being transported several miles from all over the site on I-90 to be dumped at a National Historic Landmark in a highly populated area as well as desecration of Native American land?

The repository is in an elevated  hill location, all pollution runs downhill, it is documented by epa to be seeping “very high levels of metals that discharge into Canyon Creek”.

Would someone with a brain check into this?

Busted: Cholesterol Claims

Cholesterol Claims Confound
Cholesterol-battling plant stanol-based Benecol has been busted in the UK for exaggerating TV advert claims even though they were based on UK National Health Service, British Heart Foundation (BHF) and World Health Organization (WHO) data.
A veteran healthy foods consultant called the ruling “stupid” and advised Raiso-owned Benecol’s UK license holder, Johnson & Johnson, to sue the UK agency in question.
The ads for Benecol drinking yoghurt claimed, "two out of three adults have high cholesterol" in the UK, but the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the claim manipulated BHF and other data and, therefore exaggerated the health benefit of the product.”
‘Stupid?’
Despite being approved by the broadcast approver, Clearcast, the ASA also ruled the ad had inappropriately used an EU-approved cholesterol reducing claim by stating Benecol was, “proven to lower cholesterol by up to 10% in just three weeks."
“This attack on a European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)-approved claim has to be one of the most stupid regulatory rulings that I have seen,” opined industry consultant, editor and analyst Julian Mellentin.
The ASA panel who arrived at this decision must be composed of people with zero understanding of the regulation and the science. They should be called to account.”
ASA reasoning
The ASA said the Benecol ad had not been clear enough about what cholesterol levels of 5 mmol/l meant, even if WHO figures showed two thirds of people had raised cholesterol based on this measure. BHF data was similar.
In casting the ad as “misleading” and “exaggerated”, the ASA said some of the data was based on LDL cholesterol and not total cholesterol, and that some dated from five or more years ago.
Further, “While we acknowledged that the NHS Choices article submitted stated that total cholesterol of less than 5 mmol/l was advised for healthy adults, we noted that it did not state that all levels of over 5 mmol/l were considered to be ‘high’, rather than, for example, being considered raised or of moderate risk.”
“In addition, we were concerned that the BHF 2007 report gave blood cholesterol levels for England but that it did not include a UK figure.”
For the claim itself the ASA noted the European Commission backed claim wording flexibility but in this case was, “concerned that although the ad stated ‘LOWER CHOLESTEROL UP TO 10% in 3 weeks’, and ‘PROVEN TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL’, it did not include the required information about high cholesterol being a risk factor in the development of CHD [coronary heart disease].”
“We therefore considered the meaning of the authorised disease risk reduction claim was significantly altered.”
It said the supplementary information was not prominent enough in the ad compared to other information and concluded, “The ad must not be broadcast again in its current form.”
Challenge?
But this logic failed to impress Mellentin.
“The regulator is once again ignoring the fact that a company is using a legally permitted claim, that the wording falls very clearly within the boundaries of what is permitted by the regulation and that the product and the claim have been supported by eminent independent bodies such as the British Heart Foundation and several others.”
“It's time that companies resisted this type of ignorance and regulatory arrogance. If Benecol was my company I'd take the ASA to court where they would be subjected to a humiliation that they richly deserve.”
Benecol cholesterol-lowering claims were approved in many countries before the 2009 EU nutrition and health claim approvals that also included related plant stanols compounds.
That stated: The Panel concludes that for an intake of 1.5 - 2.4 g/d an average reduction of between 7 and 10.5 % can be expected.”
A summary of those claims can be found here .

Truth in Publishing?

UPDATE 4-14-14:  A "friend" of Adams posts this expose on another fraud in supplements Adams is selling.
Can You Trust Your Supplements: http://jonbarron.org/dietary-supplements/can-you-trust-your-supplements

As it stands now, based on some recently uncovered information, the "health ranger" is now a "News Journalist".

Software creator to "editor" and also a so-called independent reviewer.

You have to be the real judge of exactly what color chameleon it is today.  Might have been different yesterday, perhaps different tomorrow.

As I've mentioned I have been copied from the inception of this wunderkind's creations.  He started lurking in 2003 and copying without attribution.  Could be flattery, maybe.  But what about his defamation, and I've never even talked with the fellow.

I've always stood on the fact that I have worked in media with many well respected companies over the years, and I follow ethical practices.

Here's one thing you might find interesting. If there was real transparency that would be better. After all, isn't it "Truth Publishing"?
Sound too good to be true? That's what I thought at first, too. But then I took the time to meet the people, research the rainforest herbs and experience their healing effects myself. Now I'm not only convinced this is the company that's going to pave the way to sustainable business practices in the coming years, I'm also convinced it represents the very best business opportunity available in the natural health industry today for anyone interested in an independent, at-home business where you control your own financial destiny. That's no casual claim, either. Keep reading to see why I've become such an outspoken advocate of the Amazon Herb Company, even while refusing to become a associate myself (due to journalism ethics, because if I got involved with the company, I could no longer offer a truly independent opinion like what you're reading here).

Simply 4 Alzheimer's

Make sure you are using fully natural vitamin E, no synthetics: "The hell with dl"

Despite the occasional negative publicity surrounding vitamin E, this nutrient has proven itself time and again to be one amazing antioxidant. Case in point: Research published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association has shown that vitamin E can help slow functional decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease.1

This development is particularly significant since no cure for Alzheimer’s exists—only treatments to slow the progression of the disease. Currently, two main classes of drugs are approved for Alzheimer’s treatment: cholinesterase inhibitors (such as Aricept®, Exelon® and Razadyne®) and memantine (Namenda®).

These drugs may treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s—like memory loss and problems with reasoning—but they also have their fair share of troublesome side effects, including nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased bowel movements, headache and dizziness.

Researchers have found, however, that vitamin E may actually work better than certain conventional treatments in slowing cognitive decline.

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, investigators wanted to determine the effectiveness of vitamin E, mematine or a combination of the two in slowing the progression of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease in patients already taking a cholinesterase inhibitor like Aricept®.

Participants received 2,000 IU vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) per day, 20 mg memantine per day, a combination of the two or a placebo.

At the end of the five-year study period, the researchers analyzed data from 561 of the participants (140 taking vitamin E, 142 taking memantine, 139 using the combination treatment and 140 on placebo). They found that the group given the vitamin E had a delay in clinical progression of the disease of 19 percent per year (in other words, a delay of 6.2 months) compared to the placebo group.

In addition, those in the vitamin E group did not demand increased attention from caregivers.

More importantly, contrary to other studies that have implicated vitamin E as the cause of increased mortality—especially at higher doses2-3—this study actually concluded that vitamin E has a good safety profile, with greater death frequency in the groups that took the memantine or the vitamin E/memantine combination than the vitamin E group.

In conclusion, the researchers wrote that, among patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s, “2,000 IU/day of alpha tocopherol compared with placebo resulted in slower functional decline. There were no significant differences in the groups receiving memantine alone or memantine plus alpha tocopherol. These findings suggest benefit of alpha tocopherol in mild to moderate Alzheimers disease by slowing functional decline and decreasing caregiver burden.”

This isn’t the first study to praise vitamin E’s brain-protective powers. Another study showed that people with the highest plasma levels of total vitamin E, total tocopherols and total tocotrienols had a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to those with the lowest levels.4

Specifically, people with the highest plasma total vitamin E or total tocopherols had a 45 percent decreased risk of developing the disease, and those with the highest total tocotrienols had a 54 percent reduction in risk, as compared to people with the lowest levels.

Is E an Option for You?

Only a qualified medical professional—ideally one with vast knowledge in nutritional supplementation—can determine whether or not high doses of vitamin E would be appropriate for you or your loved one with Alzheimer’s.

The recommended daily allowance for healthy adults is a meager 22.4 IU, but tolerable upper intake levels go as high as 1,500 IU.5 The JAMA study used 2,000 IU. For general brain and memory health/maintenance, 400 IU per day should suffice.

In many cases, the risks of disease progression far outweigh any potential risks of taking high doses of certain drugs or supplements—but only you and your doctor can make that determination. But, as this study shows, vitamin E offers great promise, and its potential should not be ignored.

Eat Your Greens and Stay Healthy

Eat Your Greens, or Your Gut Gets It

While Congress lets Big Food crush school lunch reform, new research shows just how bad the status quo is. By Tom Philpott | Wed Nov. 16, 2011 4:00 AM GMT While Big Food rams its Tater Tots and frozen pizza school lunch agenda through Congress [1], we're learning more about the effects of diets high in starchy foods and low in green vegetables. And it's not pretty. I pointed yesterday to a vast recent Harvard study [2]finding that heavy consumption of potatoes—even in nonfried forms—leads to unhealthy weight gain. Now, from UK scientists, comes a study (press release here [3]; abstract here [4]) suggesting that green vegetables may have even more dietary importance than we previously thought. (Hat tip Atlantic Life [5].)

The researchers subjected mice to a diet stripped of vegetables and found that after just three weeks, the mice lost 70 to 80 percent of a kind of white blood cell called intraepithelial lymphocytes, which, the press release states, "play a critical role in monitoring the large number of micro-organisms present in the intestine, keeping infections at bay and maintaining a healthy gut." Also read: How the beef and dairy industries make sure school lunches stay loaded with fat. [6] The researchers posit that a substance known as indole-3-carbinol, prominent in leafy greens, is responsible for maintaining these white blood cells. Take it out of the diet, apparently, and the cells die. Here's a graphical depiction of their findings: One of the researchers, Marc Veldhoen, remarked that, "since the new diet contained all other known essential ingredients such as minerals and vitamins," the results surprised him. But I'm not surprised at all.

Foodstuffs are complex; they are not the sum of their vitamins and minerals, calories and fiber, fat and protein, or any other isolated substance currently being fetishized or demonized by the food industry. As this study shows, you can't calculate the level of vitamins and minerals found in leafy greens, synthesize them, combine them in a vitamin pill, and then happily dispense with leafy greens. Whole foods interact with our bodies in ways we are only beginning to understand. I predict someone will be inspired by this study to isolate indole-3-carbinol, synthesize it for a mass-produced pill, and market it as an immune-enhancing wonder supplement. If it happens, I'm willing to bet that that researchers will find that indole-3-carbinol supplements don't do the work of leafy greens, either. Recall that when scientists discovered the benefits of antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, the supplement industry rushed out with all manner of antioxidant potions—which proved to be worthless [7]. It turns out that isolated beta-carotene added to a pill or a can of soda doesn't offer the same benefits as beta-carotene in the context of a carrot. Unfortunately, a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study [8] found that more than two-thirds of US adults fail to meet the recommended daily intake of at least five fruits and vegetables per day. "Eat real veggies" is something we could be teaching kids in school cafeterias. Instead, we're going to keep teaching them to scarf down stuff like "potato smiles [9]."

Aluminum & Dementia

Aluminum & Dementia, fluoride reaction emphasized

Doug Cross is a chartered biologist, who fought for victims of the waterpoisoning incident when 20 tonnes of aluminium sulphate were put in the wrong tank in Camelford, Cornwall, in 1988. He is a BSc (Hons) PGCE, CBiol MiBiol, EurBiol.
He writes: below is the text of my web page dated 20th May 2012,summarising recent developments in our understanding of the link betweenaluminium and Alzheimer' s Disease, and the very real concern of some of our most eminent research specialists over the potentially lethal obsession of the dental public health sector of making the situation even worse by adding fluoride to aluminium-contamina ted water! The title refers to two of the greatest threats to public health - I have not included the second (the impact of using alumninium hydroxide as an adjuvant in vaccines) as it's not relevent to the fluoridation debate - but it's worth being aware of this as well! Pass this on if you wish - the vaccine article can be found on the same web page indicated below. Doug.

The new paradigm - aluminium may be responsible for two of the greatest threats to public health.
Doug Cross
20th May 2012

The most persuasive argument against water fluoridation is that fluoride can contributes to the epidemic of dementia. Whilst proponents and opponents of fluoridation argue over the minute details of its direct impacts on health, an almost unnoticed revolution in the understanding of dementia in the elderly is set to render such debates trivial in comparison. New research into the relationship between aluminium poisoning and dementia has suddenly thrown a new spotlight on the contribution that water fluoridation could be making to the future burden of dementia within our society. We ignore this new understanding at the peril of both ourselves and our descendants.

The prevalence of dementia, and particularly Alzheimer' s Disease (AD), is already a far greater health concern than cancer, and it's expected to triple in the next thirty years. For years the cause of AD has been controversial, and the main contender as the causative agent, aluminium, has been a matter of hot dispute. "It' s the third most common element in the Earth's crust," these environmentally illiterate ignoramuses claim, "It can't possibly be toxic!" Well it is, and now we have the proof. Now things are about to change. In an authoritative review published last year in the highly regarded Journal of Alzheimer' s Disease, Lucija Tomljenovic concludes unequivocally that aluminium accumulation in brain tissue over a lifetime is a leading cause of the onset of Alzheimer' s Disease in the elderly.

She warns that "In stark contradiction with the abundance of research evidence . . there appear to be "several hostile intellectual attitudes" that reject the possibility that Al toxicity contributes to the growing incidence of AD. She says that the evidence that aluminium is not merely associated with AD, but actually contributes significantly to its development, "is built upon very solid experimental evidence and should not be dismissed."

Most of the bioavailable aluminium that accumulates in our brains comes from our drinking water. That's right - it appears that the almost universal use of aluminium sulphate in modern water treatment works may actually constitute one of the greatest health threats to the older people in our

As Tomljenovic says, resistance to the evidence that aluminium is a causative agent for dementia is extremely dangerous: "Such widely circulated opinions hamper implementation of preventive plans to lessen exposure to aluminium which, according to some leading scientists advice, would be the most sound and cost-effective approach to the growing incidence of Alzheimer's dementia."

Why is this of interest to the anti-fluoridation community - and of course, those intellectually paralysed health professionals and politicians who still think that it's a great policy? Because anything that increases theability of aluminium to get into our bodies is liable also to be capable of accelerating the onset of dementia in old age - and fluoride is the most effective substance that increases its absorption from the environment.

Tomljenovic describes the problem very clearly: "In the presence of fluoride, only trace amounts of Al are needed to produce substantial neuronal injury. Both fluoride and Al when complexed in AlF-x [fluoroaluminates] appear to be more easily absorbed from the GI [gastrointestinal] tract compared to their ionic forms."

She is particularly concerned over the practice of water fluoridation: "In spite of these observations, water fluoridation persists in USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, whilst most of Europe has abandoned this practice. . . .In fluoride-treated water, fluoroaluminates are the prevalentspecies. The enhanced transport of fluoroaluminates across the GI tract and the BBB [blood-brain barrier], in context to their highly neurotoxic potential, raises significant concerns about the prevalence of these compounds in drinking water of various countries" .

The practice of adding to our drinking water the very substance that is most likely to increase the risk of aluminium intoxication leading to Alzheimer' s Disease in the elderly - fluoride - could not represent a more direct threat to the future welfare of increasing numbers of our elderly. Already one in five over the age of 80 develops dementia, and things are only going to get worse.

It is essential that we get rid of the aluminium in our public drinkingwater supplies, and stop stupidly adding fluoride to it. The evidence that the cumulative effects of chronic aluminium intoxication are responsible for this and related disastrous medical condition is now overwhelming, and causation established beyond reasonable doubt. Claiming that there remains any uncertainty about aluminium as a primary cause of AD, in the face of the convincing evidence that it is, is as perverse as the persistent andperverse fiction that fluoride is 'safe and effective' as a prophylactic treatment for dental decay.

Now it is apparent that two rampant forms of man-madeenvironmentally- mediated epidemic disease - dental fluorosis and dementia - could quite easily be brought under control. But this requires both the health and water sectors to recognise their responsibilities and take appropriate action.

Dental fluorosis could be brought under control within a decade or so, as the last vulnerable children pass through adolescence and experience the degradation of their teeth caused by their unfortunate exposure to fluoride during their earlier childhood.

But even if we take action now to replace the aluminium-based flocculants that are almost universally used in modern water treatment with less hazardous substances, most of us will not see a significant reduction in the prevalence of Alzheimer' s Disease within our own lifetimes. The latent development period for dementia appears to be sixty to seventy years, suggesting that exposure over many decades eventually causes an inexorable progression towards the onset of this dreadful result of chronic poisoning.

But that is no excuse for failing to act now - this is truly a just case for the imposition of the Precautionary Principle, for the future benefit and protection of those who will come after us.
