What You Should Be Eating and Drinking For Health and Beauty and Why

When it comes to staying healthy and aging well, there are so many things we need to consider. We have to exercise, maintain a good mental attitude, get enough sleep, engage in healthy relationships, take care of our skin and, of course, near the top of the list of factors that contribute to great health is good nutrition.

What "good nutrition" is, however, can be confusing. Ideas about nutrition have changed over the years. Two decades ago, we were told it was healthy to eat a "low-fat" diet. Unfortunately, in an effort to reduce unhealthy fats, people began eating low-fat processed foods. We didn't realize then that many of those low-fat foods were laden with extra sugar. Nor did we understand the dangers of excess sugar. We know now that something we thought was good for us has contributed to health problems.

Over the past couple years, I've been reading the latest books and articles on nutrition and anti-aging. What's touted consistently now is a diet of whole, unprocessed foods that discourage inflammation. The anti-inflammatory diet is what seems to have the most health and beauty benefits.

Dr. Oz, Dr. Howard Murad, author of The Water Secret and Dr. Jessica Wu, author of Feed Your Face, and several other doctors writing in the field of health and beauty all agree that inflammation is one of the worst offenders. They say that we promote inflammation when we eat foods that are too high on the glycemic index. And what kinds of foods are those? Foods that are high in sugar and simple carbohydrates. An anti-inflammatory diet will help to keep blood sugar levels in check, keep the skin young, and be a boon to overall health.

Here's a list of foods synthesized from a variety of sources. Most of these are recommended by a number of specialists in the field of anti-aging. What's great is that foods that help us stay young-looking also help us stay healthy.

Eggs. In an article in Time Magazine from September of 2011 written by Dr. Oz, eggs were among the foods "vindicated," and now considered to be part of a healthy diet. Previously thought to be detrimental because of their cholesterol content, in moderation, eggs are great because they're nutrient dense, provide high quality protein and are not high in calories. Another doctor, Howard Murad, recommends that women eat eggs to combat "hormonal aging." He says that eggs and other embryonic foods (seeds and beans) help women preserve optimum estrogen levels naturally.

Leafy greens. Spinach, kale, collards, romaine lettuce, etc. provide vitamin C, vitamin E, and Lutein, a nutrient that contributes to healthy, great looking skin.

Broccoli. Low in calories, and high in fiber, broccoli is a powerhouse of nutrients, including vitamin C, potassium, vitamin K, B6, folate and surprisingly, calcium.

Sweet potatoes. A good choice when you need complex carbohydrates. Rich in vitamin A, which is great for the skin and the eyes, the sweet potato is high in antioxidants (including beta-carotene), has cancer fighting abilities, and its vitamins can help boost your immune system. High in fiber, it's an excellent addition to the diet if you're looking to burn fat.

Mushrooms. According to Dr. Howard Murad, author of The Water Secret, Mushrooms are full of vitamins and have strong antioxidant properties and may inhibit tumor growth. Mushrooms also help prevent breakdown of collagen and elastin, helping your skin to stay firm and plump.

Tomatoes. Dr. Jessica Wu, a Beverly Hills dermatologist calls tomatoes "a skin superstar." High in lycopene, they help protect the skin from sun damage. Eating plenty of tomatoes can help prevent wrinkles, age spots, and inflammation.

Apples. They contain Phloretin, a powerful antioxidant. Phloretin neutralizes a large number of free radicals (which contribute to aging), and reduces inflammation and hyper-pigmentation.

Blueberries. Low in calories and virtually fat-free, blueberries are full of fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. These are on Dr. Oz's "anti-aging" checklist and some studies have shown that blueberries are beneficial for the brain and can help lower the risk of Alzheimer's Disease.

Almonds. They contain copper, selenium, zinc and healthy monounsaturated fats and fiber. Eat them, but in moderation, due to their high caloric content. According to Dr. Wu, almonds can help in the battle against gray hair, because eating almonds has been shown to increase the levels of catalase in the body. Catalase is an enzyme that neutralizes natural peroxide. When our scalp stops making catalase on its own, our hair begins to loose its pigment.

Walnuts. Loaded with omega 3 fats, walnuts are good for the skin. They're a good source of phosphorus, zinc, copper, and thiamin. Yes, they're high in calories, but a handful of nuts a day can actually benefit weight loss, because they can curb the appetite. Also, the fiber in nuts helps prevent the absorption of some of the calories.

Plain yogurt. The culturing process makes yogurt easier to digest than milk, so it's a good source of calcium if you're lactose intolerant. Yogurt contributes to colon health because of its intestine-friendly bacterial cultures, which lower the risk of colon disease.

Be wary of "non-fat" milk and yogurt. According to Dr. Oz, "When you remove all the fat from whole milk, you're left with too high a concentration of natural sugars, which interacts like candy with your hormones, especially insulin."

I was curious about this, and so began paying attention at the grocery store. When I looked at labels on regular plain yogurt, sure enough, the non-fat variety had a higher number of sugars. I now opt for low-fat, rather than non-fat. Some non-fat Greek yogurts did NOT have high sugar contents, so those are a good choice.

FYI, fat free foods often have added sugar to make up for the reduction in fat and good taste. Dr. Alan Lustig gave a lecture on the dangers of sugar and he credited the proliferation of low-fat foods in the American diet with higher levels of obesity and diabetes. According to Lustig it is not the fat that's makes us fat and sick, it's the sugar.

Salmon. Rich in omega-3s, salmon is recommended by many anti-aging specialists. Dr. Nicolas Perricone, author of The Wrinkle Cure says that eating salmon will keep your skin looking younger longer. Eating salmon helps reduce inflammation and can also help prevent heart disease, due to its high omega 3 content.

Red wine. (In moderation, no more than 2 glasses a day.) Thought to raise good cholesterol and reduce the bad kind, as well as protect arteries against cholesterol-related damage. You may have heard of the benefits of Resveratrol, which red wine contains. However, according to Dr. Oz, you'd have to drink 60 liters to get the full benefits. Still, if you're going to drink alcohol, red wine is the best choice for your health. White wine doesn't contain Resveratrol.

Dark chocolate. Eat dark chocolate in moderation (meaning no more than one oz. a day or every few days) and reap the benefits of its antioxidant content and high concentration of flavanols. Dr. Wu says that dark chocolate consumption can promote better circulation, improved skin hydration, and can help the skin resist the signs of sun damage.

Olive Oil. This is a "healthy fat" which, according to Dr. Murad will feed your brain, skin, and your cellular membranes. It's one of the essential fatty acids that helps keep us hydrated, supple, youthful, and beautiful.

Coconut oil. Another healthy fat. Previously thought to raise cholesterol, recent studies have proven that coconut oil raises the good cholesterol, while keeping bad cholesterol in check. Also, there's new evidence that suggests coconut oil is salutary for the brain and can guard against Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Green tea. An excellent source of antioxidants, in particular Epigallocatechin gallate, green tea is one of the best things you can drink for health and anti-aging. It helps enhance the skin's ability to fight sun damage. It also fights inflammation.

Oatmeal. Filling and high in fiber, oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate that can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Just be sure to eat the kind without added sugar and chemicals. You can add your own nuts, and/or fruit to make it taste good. Even if you add a sweetener, better to be able to control the amount you use, rather than consume all the extra sugar in pre-packaged brands.

Quinoa. Quinoa tastes and acts like a grain, but it's actually a seed. It's high in antioxidants, fiber and protein (it contains all the amino acids), and low in calories.

Of course there are many more healthy foods than those on this list, but these are the foods on the lists of a number of doctors specializing in anti-aging, and health & beauty.

A Few Foods You Should NOT Be Eating or Drinking and Why:

White bread, donuts, cookies, pastries, cakes and sugary cereals. These high glycemic foods contain trans fats and sugar, which contribute to inflammation.

According to Dr. David J Goldberg, author of Light Years Younger, these foods all contain "high-glycemic" carbohydrates, which flood the body with glucose molecules minutes after they are eaten. All these foods have been linked to decreased insulin sensitivity, which means they impair the body's most important glucose regulating mechanism. To save your skin, favor foods low on the glycemic index.

Sodas. (Diet or regular.) Both regular and diet sodas pose health risks. A recent study showed that regular soda contributed to hard to detect fats in the organs, particularly in the liver. And the artificial sweeteners and dyes in diet soda have been linked to brain cell damage. Sodas also cause the body to draw calcium from the bones, contributing to osteoporosis.

Sugar. Processed sugar doesn't contribute to good nutrition and too much of it can be harmful. Aside from contributing to weight gain and diabetes, excess sugar ages the skin via a process called glycation wherein harmful sugar molecules attach to the collagen and elastin in the skin and make it rigid. These molecules build up and eventually cause wrinkles. Sugar also contributes to more health issues than were previously understood. According to Dr. Alan Lustig, who gave the famed lecture Sugar: The Bitter Truth, sugar should be deemed a toxin. Fruit, which is high in natural sugar is okay, because it contains fiber which helps keep it from spiking the blood sugar level, but juice, with all the fiber removed, is less beneficial.

Low glycemic carbs include: Oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, Soybeans, lentils.

High glycemic carbs (which should be avoided) include white flour, white bread, white pasta, corn, corn chips, cornflakes, processed cereals with sugar, white rice.

Low glycemic vegetables include: Yams, green beans, cabbage, leafy greens, avocado, bell peppers, Tomatoes, broccoli. High glycemic vegetables include: white potatoes, carrots and Parsnips.

Low glycemic fruits include: Apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, melon, kiwi, blueberries. High glycemic fruits include: Fruit juicds, bananas, mangoes and papayas.

There you have it: to eat and not to eat. It's a lot to consider, but hopefully knowing the benefits and risks of your options can help you make good decisions about what you put in your body.

As always, wishing you good health and great beauty. ~ Toni Ann Johnson

Health and Beauty Benefits of Olive Oil

Olive oil is found in almost any kitchen, even those that are sparsely used for cooking. It can be used to spice up pasta, to fry your favorite meat or even add a little kick to the boring salad you're making for dinner. You know it tastes good, but what else is it doing for you? How can you use it for your skin?

Dating as far back as the Egyptian Empire, this oil has been used for centuries as people have realized just how beneficial it can be. There is even a Mediterranean diet that is based on the product. Rich in Vitamin A, B-1, B-2, C, D and Iron, the oil has proven to reduce the signs of aging and directly moisturize the skin. A diet full of olive oil*will leave your skin feeling fresh, looking great and giving you the kind of shine you see on the red carpet. Many people will apply olive oil directly to the face because it gives a soft, smooth glow.

Aside from the skin benefits, olive oil also can be hugely beneficial to your overall health. Researches have found that it can help improve cardiovascular health. It helps protect your digestive tract, and in areas where the product is prevalent, they have reported much lower percentages of people with cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, it reduces blood pressure, and can prohibit ulcers as it works to give you a regular digestive system.

People with diabetes have found that the product can ease the problems associated with the disease. Diabetics find that when in their diet, it provides a satisfying answer to their dietary needs.

Furthermore, diets high in the oil have seen smaller percentages of asthma and arthritis, AND it can help prevent colon cancer.

As you can see, olive oil has so many health benefits. Not only is it delicious, but it can certainly help save your life. While many people purchase olive oil from their nearest grocery store, you can also find bulk wholesale olive oil online or through your nearest wholesaler. Be sure to find a reputable company that sells essential oils and other wholesale bath and body products. You will find that purchasing wholesale can be much cheaper than buying a small bottle at your nearest grocery store. The retail mark up can be incredibly high, so do some smart shopping and order it wholesale. Furthermore, you can buy a gorgeous glass dispenser at many home-good stores and display your oil on your kitchen counter. Whatever your methods, be sure to incorporate more olive oil into you daily diet.

Organic beauty products

Much like organic food, organic beauty products should be made with ingredients that are certified organic, cosmetics and skin care products can be certified through the same processes used for food and the best way to know that you are getting an organic skin care product is to look for the USDA organic seal which means that the product has met the standards of the National Organic Program, the seal can legally be used on products labeled "100% organic" which means what it says or "organic" at least 95% organic products. Products labeled "made with organic ingredients" cannot carry the seal, but they must have at least 70% organic ingredients.

Organic is defined as follows: Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides, fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation so before a product can be labeled 'organic,' a government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. What this means for organic skin products is that the farms that make a product's raw ingredients must use organic farming practices, in addition, the product itself must be produced in a way that keeps the ingredients organic, generally, this means that no chemicals are added during the manufacturing process.

Here are some popular organic beauty products you could lay your hand on:

Jason red elements - Jason products are well known in the organic sector, their new line "Red Elements" is infused with not green, but red tea and both the cleanser and toner have shown promise. Nature's gate organics forget your line wrinkles diffuser - Helps relax facial muscles to decrease the appearance of fine lines.

Zia oat milk detoxifying mask - Best for soothing sensitive or irritated skin, perfect for anyone with problem or sensitive skin and ideal for those with rosacea or eczema as well. Avalons organic renewal and vitality facial cleansing gel - Fine for normal to dry skin, but it also helps soothe sensitive skin too, the mild formula is fine for daily use.

Silky underwear - An innovative product by LUSH made with cocoa butter, jasmine, and cornstarch, it is a perfect body powder for the hot summer months when moisturizer is too much.

Burt's Bees head to toe starter kit - Experience a tidbit of everything Burt's Bees has to offer with this kit full of sampler size products, it works well as a gift or as a travel kit for yourself.

L'Occitane shea butter - This is one of the most famous products by L'Occitane, nonetheless, they offer a wide range of quality products for your skin including a new Grape Body Care line.

Kiss my face moisture shave in lavender and shea butter - Moisturizer for dry skin and great for warding of razor burn or infections from razor cuts.

Kiss my face shampoo - Kiss my face is not only organic, but also affordable, lots of types to choose from, all kinds of conditioners and different hair needs addressed.

Burt's Bees shampoo - Both the shampoo and Burt's Bees conditioners combat different issues from dull hair to color treated hair, they work and smell great and aren't too expensive.

Smooth skin

Smooth skin is achieved when proper care is taken of the skin, for the face, normal skin - A mild facial scrub helps keep skin soft and smooth; try Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub with moisture-rich soy. Acne-prone skin, wash your face with a beta-hydroxy-acid cleanser that penetrates pores, removing dirt and oil like Biore Blemish Fighting Cleanser. Skin with fine lines - Alpha-hydroxy acids digest the cement that keeps dead skin cells attached to one another and makes lines more visible; try Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA Face & Body Polish.

Sensitive skin Products containing lactic acid are gentle exfoliators; opt for Chanel Maximum Radiance Delicate Exfoliator. For your body, normal skin - because body skin is thicker than facial skin, rough exfoliant like salt scrubs and crushed natural ingredients like nuts are most effective; try Bath & Body Works True Blue Spa There is the Rub Salt Scrub or Les Elixirs Sweet Orange Exfoliating Cream. Rough skin - Use AHA body products on rough areas like elbows, knees and feet; use Estee Lauder Body Smoother Exfoliating Crème. Sensitive skin - Body exfoliators with jojoba beads are gentle; Murad Exfoliating Body Cleansing Gel also includes chamomile and calendula, both anti-irritants. If you have flesh-colored bumps, up to 40 percent of adults suffer from keratosis pilaris, tiny bumps on the upper outer arms and thighs, the condition is genetically inherited and caused when the skin's top layers don't slough off normally, the hair follicles are elevated above the surrounding skin, resulting in a dead-skin-cell backlog.

Over-the-counter remedy Dermatologist Bruce Katz, M.D., director of the JUVA Skin & Laser Center in New York City, recommends using moisturizers with skin-exfoliating AHAs, try BeneFit Wonderbod, it will help make the surface less rough. For ingrown hairs, that is, people with dark wiry body hair are more prone to these often-painful bumps that frequently appear after waxing or shaving, when growing hair is blocked by dead skin cells or curls at the skin's surface so the tip re-enters the follicle, the follicle and surrounding skin can become infected, causing the bump. Over-the-counter remedy Aida Thibiant, owner of Thibiant Beverly Hills Day Spa in California advises clients to use an exfoliating product and loofah on the area, it takes longer on the arms and butt, she says, but it will make ingrown hairs disappear.

Also apply products with pore-de-clogging salicylic acid to the area daily; try Neutrogena Men Skin Clearing Astringent After Shave. And if you have warts - warts are caused by a viral infection that gives rise to a growth, it is a common problem and they are easy to contract, particularly in places you walk barefoot, like a yoga center or locker room, warts can be contagious both to other people and to you, they can spread to other areas of your body. Over-the-counter remedy "Covering a wart with a bandage stops the possibility of it spreading, Drugstore treatments like DuoFilm are food options for warts on hands and feet, but for more sensitive areas like the face, visit a dermatologist.

Clear skin tips

Maintaining a clear skin is not as difficult and expensive as people make it to look and sound, there are some little tips to make your skin appear clear and beautiful in no time, first of all, if your skin is not clean it can never be clear, wash your face in the morning when you wake up, and again before bedtime, always use an antibacterial facial soap, there are many good products on the market these days, priced to suit any income, do not wash your face more than two times every day, over-cleansing can dry out your skin, which can cause your pores to produce more oil.

Use your fingertips or a washcloth, avoid scrubbing your skin as this also can cause your pores to over-produce oil. Always use an SPF facial moisturizer after you wash your face even if your skin is very oily, you should use a moisturizer as it helps achieve balance and even out skin tone, but make sure your moisturizer is oil-free, or non-comedogenic so it will not clog your pores and make sure any make-up you use is non-comedogenic. Also avoid getting hair products like hairspray or gel on your skin; try not to touch your skin with your hands during the day because oil and germs from your fingers can cause pimples.

And the final tip and most important tip for clear skin is - DO NOT squeeze pimples! Yes, it is tempting but squeezing a pimple will only make it get worse and take longer to clear and it bruises the skin, catses scarring, and can spread bacteria, causing more pimples. These simple, easy to follow tips will help you see clear, beautiful skin, sooner than you ever thought was possible. Daily use of sunscreen will help prevent irregular pigmentation from occurring; also tretinon-applied daily for many months will treat irregular pigmentation. To keep facial lines from setting in around your mouth, over-exaggerate smiling, and then gnash your teeth together. Repeat each motion 24 times.

To prevent a wrinkled neck, sweep your hands up under your chin and down again. Repeat 12 times. Rosewater can also be used as a home treatment, rosewater is filled with vitamin B, E, and k, and it is a good cleansing astringent as it wipes away gently the dirt and oil while nourishing the skin. You can also try moisturizing with natural emollient coconut oil, this exfoliates the outer layer of a dead skin while protecting it and moisturizing it and making it firmer, smoother and stronger, lastly a mixture of milk and honey, milk has lactic acid which is a natural exfoliant filled with vitamins and softener which helps in peeling the top layer of the skin while honey is a natural antibacterial and antiseptic agent that can help cleanse and shrink the pores while clearing it. Do not use moisturizers that contain mineral oils and other natural ingredients that have oil in it, as this will clog your pores the more so the general rule is to make sure the product is oil free for people with oily skin and vice versa for people with dry skin.

Acne skin

Acne is a skin condition that causes spots; most people affected by acne are aged between 12 and 25, however, men and women in their 30s and 40s can also suffer from acne, there are many treatments available to help deal with the condition. To maintain a clear acne skin, here are some tips to take note of: clean your skin gently - if you have acne, you should gently wash your face with a mild cleanser, once in the morning and once in the evening, as well as after heavy exercise, wash your face from under the jaw to the hairline and be sure to thoroughly rinse your skin, note that using strong soaps or rough scrub pads is not helpful and can actually make the problem worse, astringents are also not recommended unless the skin is very oily and then they should be used only on oily spots.

Avoid frequent handling of the skin - avoid rubbing and touching skin lesions, squeezing, pinching or picking blemishes can lead to the development of scars or dark blotches. Shave skin carefully - men who shave and who have acne should test both electric and safety razors to see which is more comfortable, when using a safety razor, make sure the blade is sharp and soften your beard thoroughly with soap and water before applying shaving cream, shave gently and only when necessary to reduce the risk of nicking blemishes. Avoid a sunburn or a suntan - many of the medicines used to cure a pimples can make you more prone to sunburn, a sunburn that reddens the skin or suntan that darkens the skin may make blemishes less visible and make the skin feel drier but these benefits are only temporary and there are known risks of excessive sun exposure, such as more rapid skin aging and a risk of developing skin cancer.

And lastly don't ever forget to choose your cosmetics carefully - while undergoing acne treatment you may need to change some of the cosmetics you use, all cosmetics, such as foundation, blush, eye shadow, moisturizers, and hair-care products should be oil free, choose products labeled non-comedogenic "meaning they do not promote the formation of closed pores", in some people, however, even these products may make acne worse. There are a vast variety of clear skin tips or ways to clear up acne, but not all are effective. Acne soaps and cleansers are the most important products but people ignore its importance. Although soaps and cleaners are common, they eliminate root causes of acne breakouts.

Smooth acne skin can be achieved when proper care is taken of the skin, for the face, a mild facial scrub helps keep skin soft and smooth; try Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub with moisture-rich soy and if your skin type is acne-prone, wash your face with a beta-hydroxy-acid cleanser that penetrates pores, removing dirt and oil like Biore Blemish Fighting Cleanser. When you follow all these steps including eating a healthy diet, you are well on your way to maintaining your acne skin and reducing blemishes.

Death and Sleep Drugs

Well here we are.

And once again the mainstream media is reporting on the problems with sedative hypnotic drugs.

The same problems of death and higher risk of death is reported today, even when it has been reported on Natural Health News since 2005.

I want to know why things haven't changed in prescribing practices if this is such a major public health issue. And I ask why, if the risk of cancer is higher because of taking these drugs, would you want to take them?

Setting Big PhRMA profit aside, I also want to know why, if the "benefit" from these drugs is meagre, that other options are not made available to people with sleep issues.

If you have sleeping concerns and would like to learn about other and more natural ways to get real and restful sleep without drugs or drug hangover, get in touch with us through our Health Forensics program.

Sleeping pills 'linked to increased death risk'

Sleeping pills used by thousands of people in the UK appear to be linked with a higher death risk, doctors warn.
The American study in BMJ Open compared more than 10,000 patients on tablets like temazepam with 23,000 similar patients not taking these drugs.
Death risk among users was about four times higher, although the absolute risk was still relatively low.
Experts say while the findings highlight a potential risk, proof of harm is still lacking.
They say patients should not be alarmed nor stop their medication, but if they are concerned they should discuss this with their doctor or pharmacist.
UK guidelines for NHS staff say hypnotic drugs should only be used for short periods of time because of tolerance to the drug and the risk of dependency. But they make no mention of an associated death risk, despite other studies having already reported this potential risk.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said it would consider the results of this latest study and whether it has any implications for current prescribing guidance.
Millions prescribedIn 2010 in England, there were 2.8 million prescriptions dispensed for temazepam and almost 5.3 million for another common sleeping pill called zopiclone.
There were also more than 725,000 prescriptions dispensed for zolpidem and more than 9,400 for zaleplon, two other drugs in this same family.
The latest study looked at a wide range of sleeping pills, including drugs used in the UK, such as benzodiazepines (temazepam and diazepam), non-benzodiazepines (zolpidem, zopiclone and zaleplon), barbiturates and sedative antihistamines.
The investigators, from the Jackson Hole Centre for Preventive Medicine in Wyoming and the Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Centre in California, found that people prescribed these pills were 4.6 times more likely to die during a 2.5-year period compared to those not on the drugs. Overall, one in every 16 patients in the sleeping pill group died (638 out of 10,531 in total) compared to one in every 80 of the non-users (295 deaths out of 23,674 patients).                     This increased risk was irrespective of other underlying health conditions, such as heart and lung diseases, and other factors like smoking and alcohol use, which the researchers say they did their best to rule out. The researchers say it is not yet clear why people taking sleeping tablets may be at greater risk. The drugs are sedating and this may make users more prone to falls and other accidents. The tablets can also alter a person's breathing pattern as they sleep and they have been linked to increased suicide risk.
'Meagre benefits'In this latest study, those taking the highest doses of sleeping tablets also appeared to be at greater risk of developing cancer.
The researchers say: "The meagre benefits of hypnotics, as critically reviewed by groups without financial interest, would not justify substantial risks."
They say even short-term use may not be justifiable.
But Malcolm Lader, professor of clinical psychopharmacology at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, said people should not panic as a result of the findings.
"The study needs to be replicated in a different sample and I think we need to hold judgement until we have further studies.
"What we don't want is people stopping sleeping tablets and then going through a very disturbing period of insomnia.
"People should discuss this with their GP but should not under any circumstances stop taking their medication."
Nina Barnett, of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said: "This is an important study and although it is unlikely to radically change prescribing in the immediate term, it should raise awareness and remind both patients and prescribers to the potential risks of sedative use for insomnia.
"The association between mortality and sedation is not new and this research tells us that people who took these medicines were more likely to die than people who didn't take them.
"However it does not mean that the deaths were caused by the medicine."
A spokesman for the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry said the safety of medicines was closely monitored and continued even after regulatory approval.

Most Taking Rx for Bone Drugs Quit

Certainly this is no surprise.  Osteoporosis drugs have many problematic and even life threatening side effects. They also require many lifestyle adjustments that after time many people, both men and women, find difficult.  Additionally many are fluoride based which causes the reduction or even ending of the function of osteoclast cells in your body.  Many severe fractures and jaw bone problems are linked to this drug function.

There are more natural things you can do to protect bone health.  And there are many natural approaches to keeping them strong and healthy.

Walking and weight bearing exercise are great!  Learn Tai Chi. Look into Lymphology at IAL.

A healthy diet and the right supplements are great! (Just don't be taking so much calcium.  Generally doctors tell you to take about twice what you need and the wrong type - carbonate).

Get hydrated!

Cut down on exposure to EMF and fluoride as well as other environmental toxins (the DEXA test is one of these and so is your cell phone).

Consider drinking nettle tea.

Consider using homeopathic cell salts.

Get tested for and take vitamin D3. (25 OH test)

Watch soy, it can block calcium, and is too often GMO.

By Frederik JoelvingNEW YORK | Mon Feb 27, 2012 5:27pm EST(Reuters Health) - People with the bone-thinning condition osteoporosis often skip the drugs they are prescribed, and telephone counseling does little to change that, according to new research.
Researchers said osteoporosis is involved in more than two million fractures a year in the U.S., racking up medical costs of $19 billion.
In addition to exercise and a healthy diet with enough calcium and vitamin D, as well as measures to prevent falls, medications may reduce the risk of broken bones -- which can take a serious toll on the health of old people.
For people at high risk, bone drugs such as bisphosphonates may cut the yearly fracture risk from five percent to three percent, said Dr. Daniel Solomon of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
But people often stop taking the medications, added Solomon, also of Harvard Medical School.
"It's the problem with all chronic conditions," he told Reuters Health. "Drugs for asymptomatic chronic conditions are universally poorly adhered to."
Some 10 million Americans currently suffer from bone thinning, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. The majority are postmenopausal women.
Bone drugs include Merck's Fosamax, Roche's Boniva, Novartis's Reclast and Warner Chilcott's Actonel.
To see if they could convince people to take their drugs, Solomon and his colleagues divided more than 2,000 men and women with osteoporosis into two groups.
The participants were all on Medicare, the government's health insurance for the elderly, and got their meds for a co-pay of no more than a few dollars.
All of them received fall-prevention lifestyle tips in the mail from the researchers, and one group also had about eight counseling sessions over the phone.
During those sessions, trained counselors tried to identify why people skipped their drugs and to motivate them to get back on the treatment. The intervention ended up costing about $281 per patient, including training of the counselors.
After one year, there was little difference between the two groups.
Those who got counseling filled their prescriptions 49 percent of the time, while the others did so 41 percent of the time, based on claims data. That gap was too small to be reliable, statistically speaking.
The researchers didn't find any differences in how many people broke a bone or reported falls, either.
According to Solomon, people who skipped their medicine often said they had forgotten about it, didn't like the way it made them feel or didn't think they needed it.
Still, Solomon, whose findings appear in the Archives of Internal Medicine, wasn't willing to give up on counseling.
"It would be overstating the data to say that we should use this. What I'm saying is you don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater," he said. "I think that counseling is something we need to continue to examine."
Researchers have been experimenting with a lot of ways to get people to take their drugs, including beeping pill caps and financial incentives, Solomon added. But the results have often been disappointing.
"At this point there really aren't any proven interventions," he said.
In an editorial, Dr. Seth Berkowitz and Dr. Kirsten Johansen of the University of California, San Francisco, say behavior change is an increasingly important part of medicine as chronic diseases continue rise.
"There is likely no 'magic bullet' in the behavior change arsenal in general or for increasing treatment adherence specifically," they write. "This does not mean, however, that the effects may not be clinically significant."

Beauty Tips - How to Keep Your Flat Iron Clean and Well Maintained

Once you have purchased a flat iron, whether you made a big investment on a high-end styler, or decided to go with a functional yet cost-effective option, one of your top concerns should be how to get the most out of your styler and help it to last for many years. If you properly clean and care for your flat iron, it should last at least 5-7 years and continue to give you great styling results every time.

Follow these guidelines for proper flat iron care to keep your styler in great working order for years to come!

Cleaning

Keep a hand towel nearby and wipe off the flat iron plates as you are working on your hair. The products in your hair and the heat protectant that you use tend to build up on the plates and burn. If you wipe off the styler frequently as you are doing your hair, you can prevent this from happening. You also prevent products from burning onto your hair.

You should never use a cleaner on the flat iron plates, especially an abrasive cleaner that could scratch the plate surfaces. Use a soft and slightly damp cloth to gently wipe off the plates. It is also a good idea to wipe off the handles periodically as you are styling.

If your plates do become burned or seem to be stained with residue, you'll probably notice that you have to pass the plates over your hair more times to get it straightened. You might also notice a burning or unpleasant smell in your hair as you are styling. There is not much that you can do to clean them once the plates are burned, so do be sure to take the time to wipe them off as you style.

Storing

For safety and to prevent the possibility of a fire, allow the styler to cool completely before storing. Store your flat iron in the storage bag that it came in or in another storage bag. Do not wrap the cord around the styler as this can cause stress to the cord where it meets the iron. This can cause the cord to fray or break, and you might have an electrical short or other power issues. You should also never hang the flat iron by the cord for the same reason. Just bundle the cord loosely next to the iron to store.

If this point was not emphasized enough from the notes on cleaning the iron, make sure that you clean the handles and plates thoroughly before you store it.

Maintaining the Handles

You might notice that the handles loosen with prolonged use. Usually you can remove the plate that covers the hinges and re-tighten them with a small screw driver or wrench. Always unplug the iron and allow it to cool before attempting any type of repair.
