Finucane Family Angered By Cameron

The widow of murdered Northern Ireland solicitor Pat Finucane said today she felt “angry” and “insulted” after David Cameron told her he was proposing a barrister-led review of her husband’s case.

After meeting the prime minister in Downing Street, Geraldine Finucane told reporters the whole family was “very disappointed” and would not support the initiative.

The family wants a full independent inquiry into the loyalist shooting in 1989.

Mr Finucane was shot by the UDA as he sat eating a Sunday meal at home. His wife was wounded in the attack, which was witnessed by the couple’s three children.There were allegations that some members of the security forces collaborated with loyalist paramilitaries to the extent that they could have stopped the killing.

Speaking in Downing Street, Mrs Finucane said: “I am so angry and so insulted by being brought to Downing Street today to hear what the Prime Minister had on offer.

“He is offering a review. He wants a QC to read the papers in my husband’s case and that is how he expects to reach the truth. All of us are very upset and very disappointed.”

She added that she was “so angry with the prime minister that I actually called a halt to the meeting”.

Mr Finucane’s son Michael, who also attended today’s meeting with Mr Cameron and Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson, accused the prime minister of “reneging on a commitment that the previous government made to hold a public inquiry”.

He said Mr Cameron gave the “feeble” explanation that public inquiries had not worked in similar cases. “He seemed oblivious to the fact that the absence of participation by our family would mean we simply couldn’t support what he proposed,” he added. more

Absurd Rick Santorum Tries to Blame Poor Economy on Single Mothers

GOP Clown Car crewmember Rick Santorum has figured out how to save our economy: marry off all the single mothers.

“Look at the political base of the Democratic Party: it is single mothers who run a household,” he said on the American Family Association’s radio show Today’s Issues.

“Why? Because it’s so tough economically that they look to the government for help and therefore they’re going to vote. So if you want to reduce the Democratic advantage, what you want to do is build two parent families, you eliminate that desire for government.”

Yeah that's right, Rick Santorum is blaming the economy on unwed single mothers, who of course only vote in order to further drain the resources of hard working men, the succubi they all are or something. Gosh, if we got rid of single moms, America would be great again.

“We need to have a policy that supports families, that encourages marriage, that has fathers take responsibility for their children,” he said.

“You can’t have limited government — you can’t have a wealthy society if the family breaks down, that basic unit of society. And that needs to be included in this economic discussion.”

Is this the part where I mention GOP Rep. Joe Walsh being a deadbeat dad who owes his wife and kids more than a hundred grand while loaning his campaign tens of thousands of dollars? If only we could be more like upright, family oriented Republicans like Newt Gingrich, eh? Would also help if Republicans stopped blocking efforts to equalize gender pay so that women can earn more, but that's apparently not crossed their minds either.

Last week, the House's passage of the now-notorious H.R. 358 -- also known as the "Let Women Die" bill -- caused deserved outrage. But the bill's connection to the high-ranking Catholic group that fought for its passage, even while the American church is fighting a horrific new sex abuse scandal, hasn't been given the attention it deserves.

The new bill (which the president has vowed to veto) would essentially obliterate abortion coverage by both public and private insurers, and most egregiously get hospitals off the hook for refusing to perform abortions for women whose lives are in immediate danger. It would literally allow hospitals to let women die with impunity.

H.R. 358's easy passage by a majority in Congress (with some defecting Democrats in the ranks) delivered another shock of sexism in a political landscape that has been assaulted by one anti-abortion, anti-contraception, anti-women's health measure after another, all firing in a succession of rapid shots from statehouses across the nation as well as from DC. Helping to man the artillery is a largely disgraced Catholic hierarchy.

This momentum for misogyny has been painted as having mostly arisen from the Tea Party and the extremist evangelical megachurch Pat Robertson types. But these anti-choice forces are not alone, and they are not solely responsible: rather the (all-male, it should go without saying) Council of Catholic Bishops has aggressively, relentlessly, and successfully lobbied for many of the worst of the measures in the "War on Women."

During the health care debates of 2009, this group was instrumental in pushing for anti-abortion language. At the time, NPR reported that Democrats found them to be "a lobbying force of unexpected influence" that had decided after budget cuts to focus their "strongest efforts" almost entirely on abortion issues rather than waste time on say, helping the poor.

Specifically, their aims have included the one-two punch of pushing for the "let women die" clauses and anti-abortion measures of H.R. 358, as well as the alarming new fight against coverage for contraception, which would deprive the overwhelming majority of the Catholic public that uses birth control with coverage for birth control. more

A Bit Of A Coincidence

For reasons that matter not, there isn't much music in me these days, nor live television for that matter. But sat this afternoon having a cuppa in a friends kitchen with the television playing in the next room. I suddenly pricked my ears when I heard introduced as, the 'other' team, on some quiz show or other, the London Didgeridoo Club.

Lo and behold, one member of the team was; on the only bit of live TV I have watched in the last twelve months, the fellow whose CD is the only one I have bought in the last five years, Steve Heath, didgeridoo player extraordinaire. A white aboriginal from Portsmouth or Plymouth or that way on.

It was watching a program about The London Underground Busking Scheme that first brought the fellow to my attention, I have chopped it down to just a few minutes that feature Steve Heath, that's the first up, the second, a pretty awesome clip, courtesy of Youtube.








I do have to say though, I am a great fan of busking and street theatre, it really gives a city some soul.

Here's a little tale I told on an Australian poetry/music forum a few years back. It was nice to know it was still there.

My last day of a holiday in Majorca, a very still autumn Sunday, I partook of the Majorcan thing, promenading. Strolling along, I heard in the distance, an angel making music.
When I finally arrived at the source of this incredible sound, there stood this angel in the guise of a hobo blowing a trumpet.
I sat a goodly while in a near state of rapture listening to this fellow making music, he really was that good.

We got to chatting, and the shorter of it, we went on the piss at his local, a little non-tourist Spanish bar, and proceeded to get rat arsed on thirty bob bottles of vino callapso.
He more than I, I have to say, for whatever my Father left me on his demise, he left me a thirst and a frightening tolerance for grog.

As this German, for that's what he turned out to be, started getting worse for wear, the barman explained, "His problem is he makes too much money" something I could well believe.
While he was still coherent, the trumpet player told me he had once been a member of the Berlin Philharmonic but had come off the rails big time, seemingly there was an obstacle on the track that resulted in eine grosse katastrophe. Sounded a lot like a woman to me.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who undergoes anti-cancer treatment, may live for not more than two years. This opinion was voiced by Salvador Navarrete, who had been Chavez's personal surgeon in Venezuela.

"When I say this, it means that he has no more than two years left. Judging by the information from his family, Chavez has a tumor in his pelvis, or sarcoma, and this is why he is receiving such aggressive chemotherapy treatment," the surgeon said in an interview with Mexican Milenio Semanal publication.

According to Navarrete, the decision to bring forward the presidential vote in Venezuela is based on the negative prognosis in Chavez's treatment. The surgeon served as one of Chavez's personal doctors since 2002, Gazeta.ru said.

The interview with Navarrete was published on Sunday, when the Venezuelan leader had flown to Cuba for medical examination and four courses of chemotherapy.

On June 10, Chavez received surgery in connection with the intrapelvic tumor. Ten days later, the Venezuelan leader was operated on again: doctors removed a malignant tumor from his intestines. Afterwards, the president received four courses of chemotherapy.

Hugo Chavez has been ruling Venezuela since 1999. He has recently announced an intention to run for presidency in 2012. Despite his health condition, Chavez is determined to win the vote, RBC reports. Pravda
