Scarlett Johansson Says Having a Toddler is like an ‘Emotionally Abusive Relationship’

Scarlett Johansson has spoken candidly about motherhood, with the actor explaining why having toddler has made her feel like she’s in “an emotionally abusive relationship”.

The 39-year-old discussed some of the challenges of motherhood during Monday’s episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast. Johansson is the parent of two, as she shares her eight-year-old daughter, Rose, with ex Romain Dauriac, and one-year-old son, Cosmo, with husband Colin Jost.

Speaking to podcast hosts Lauryn and Michael Bosstick, the actress recalled that when her daughter turned three, her perspective about motherhood ultimately changed.

“I remember my daughter when she was two, I said, ‘This is great,” the Black Widow star explained. “I don’t know what everybody is talking about.’ And then she turned three, and it’s like being in an emotionally abusive relationship.”

Johansson then pointed out how “crazy” it was when Rose turned three and said that she couldn’t do any “reasoning” with the toddler.

“Very intense emotional swings and so bossy and adamant, and like, it’s just crazy,” she recalled about her daughter’s behaviour at age three. “And, also these huge mood swings, constant mood swings.”

She noted that she still felt for her child when she had mood swings, adding: “Those poor little guys, I feel bad for them, it must be a lot…You’re like up and down constantly.”

Johansson then shared her thoughts about her one-year-old son and described a child’s baby stage as “so lovely”.

“They’re so cute. They sit there and they love you and then that’s it,” she explained. “And you just get love from them.”

The Marriage Story star once again pointed out she didn’t always feel this way when raising her daughter, adding: “You get a lot of grief from toddlers. Everything you do is wrong.”

Over the years, Johansson has continued to share some of the experiences when raising her children, specifically her daughter. During an interview with InStyle in March 2022, she discussed how Rose was at a stage where she was constantly asked her mother questions.

‘“Why are you tweezing your eyebrows? Why are you curling your lashes? What’s a tampon? What’s it for?’” she recalled, when reciting some of her daughter’s remarks.

“She asked me why my underwear went up my butt crack, and I had to try to explain what a panty line was,” Johansson continued. “I was like, “’cause you don’t want a line in your pants,’ and she was like ‘Why?’ And I was like, “’cause then you could see my underwear,’ and she was like ‘But you are wearing underwear.’ Like I know, it’s weird.”

However, Johansson still tends to keep her children out of the spotlight and opts not to post about them online, as she doesn’t even use social media herself. During her episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast, she also explained why she’s off the social media apps and how she thinks they would cause her anxiety.

“I honestly am too fragile of a person to have social media,” Johansson said. “My ego is too fragile. I can’t deal with it. My brain is too fragile, I’m like a delicate flower. I have enough anxiety, honestly.”

Sophia Bush Reveals How She Finally Saw Grant Hughes as a Romantic Interest After 10 Years of Friendship

Changing her perspective. Sophia Bush opened up about how she was about to finally consider Grant Hughes as more than a friend after a decade, leading to their eventual engagement.

On the Monday, June 13, episode of the “Drama Queens” podcast, the Good Sam actress, 39, spoke about how her cohosts and One Tree Hill alums Hilarie Burton and Joy Lenz have helped change her outlook on life and love.

“Joy and I, we process a little more slowly,” Bush noted, referencing Burton’s 12-year relationship with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, with whom the Virginia native, 39, shares two children.

The California native got emotional as she told her pals, who she met over 20 years ago on OTH, that they really helped her identify how she was choosing the wrong romantic relationships. “Something I will always cherish in both my friendships with you is that we’ve held mirrors up to each other for a very long time,” she said. “Both of you have said versions to me of what you just said, Hilarie, which is it’s about discernment and sympathy.”

Bush took a long time to realize that she was choosing partners that she thought she could help in some way. Eventually, the “Work In Progress” podcast host realized that “to fix and help and save and mother and all the s–t — that’s not your responsibility as a partner.”

She had another realization after taking a step back and asking herself why she was choosing relationships that never worked out. “Well, I’m a romantic, I’m a storyteller, I believe in people. I’m an optimist, so I often fall in love with potential,” the human rights activist revealed. “It is not, as a partner, my job or your job to help another person realize their potential. You can support someone in realizing their potential — you can’t make them do it.”

Everything changed a few years back when the John Ticker Must Die star decided to completely alter her approach to choosing dates. “When I shifted the place that I pick from or that I was willing to see potential from to being not sympathetic but inspired, I went, ‘Oh, oh!'” Bush recalled.

That’s where Hughes, 40, comes in. The False Positive actress continued, “It’s not lost on me — nor any of my friends — that the person that I went, ‘Oh!’ about, I’d known for 10 years.”

Burton exclaimed, “You already were friends with him, Sophia!”

The actress, known for playing Brooke Davis on the WB/CW series, admitted that all of her loved ones saw the spark between her and the entrepreneur long before her. “And everybody was like, ‘Welcome to your own party, ya idiot.’ And I was like, ‘Well, cool, I’m glad I’m here,'” she said.

Bush was previously married to Chad Michael Murray from 2005 to 2006. Her wedding to Hughes will mark her second marriage more than 15 years later. The Chicago P.D. alum believes age has only helped her find true love.

“I hate that the world has made us think that as we get older we’re stuck in our ways or it gets harder to find our person,” she said. “I just think you get smarter and you know yourself better, and you have the capability to shift the place you choose from in a way now [that you didn’t have in years prior].”

Hughes proposed in August 2021 on Italy’s Lake Como in a classic wooden speedboat. “So it turns out that being your favorite person’s favorite person is the actual best feeling on planet Earth 💫,” she captioned her Instagram announcement at the time.

The University of Oklahoma alum gushed over the star in his own post at the time. “She is my forever Favorite. This is my favorite. And our life is that we’re building because she said ‘Yes’ is already my favorite,” Hughes wrote via Instagram alongside photos from the romantic proposal. “I am SO EXCITED to do life with you, Babers.”
