05/17 Links Pt2: Glick: Hillel’s moment of truth; Methodist Church Rejects BDS #BDSfail

From Ian:

Caroline Glick: Hillel’s moment of truth
Two wars today are being waged against Jewish students on American university campuses. One is substantive, the other is institutional. The plight of the Jews at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island is emblematic of both.
The purpose of the substantive war is to deny Jews their freedom as Jews. As the guarantor of Jewish freedom, Israel is the subject of a systematic, multidimensional assault, carried out everywhere on campuses.
On a growing number of campuses in the United States, the only Jews who can safely express their views on Israel are those who champion Israel’s destruction.
Those who support Israel are subjected to continuous harassment by their fellow students.
The substantive battle is being led by Students for Justice in Palestine. SJP is a phantom organization with no national organization. As Jonathan Schanzer from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies testified before the US Congress last month, it is directed by former officials from non-profits including the Holy Foundation, KindHearts and the Islamic Association for Palestine that were forced to shut down after they were implicated in financing terrorist groups including Hamas and al-Qaida.
At Brown, SJP seeks to make it impossible for Jewish students to organize as Jews.
For instance, in late January, Brown Hillel hosted a discussion of Jewish identity featuring actor Michael Douglas and Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky.
SJP protested the event arguing that since both men supported Israel, the event stood in opposition to “social justice.”
As Ira Stoll reported in the New York Sun, during the event, protesters outside the hall calling for Israel’s destruction made it hard for the audience of several hundred people to hear what Sharansky and Douglas were saying.

Fred Maroun: Robert Cohen in wonderland: the fanciful world of anti-Zionist Jews
A British Jewish anti-Zionist named Robert A. H. Cohen took it upon himself to respond to my Letter from an Arab to a Jew who supports BDS. Cohen is apparently a former Senior Broadcast Journalist at BBC Radio Five Live and is regularly published at Mondoweiss, Tikkun Daily, and Jews for Justice for Palestinians.
Cohen’s response is largely predictable, with the usual boilerplate accusations against Israel that one would expect from any run-of-the-mill anti-Zionist, Jewish or not. There is an immense body of work (including articles that I have written) proving each of these accusations to be lies, wildly exaggerated, or misleading. Consequently, I will not bore my readers with this here.
The more interesting part of Cohen’s response however is that it offers a window into the weird and wonderful world of anti-Zionist Jews.
In Robert Cohen’s world, Arabs have never committed any wrongs towards the Jews of Israel, especially not a centuries-old Arab campaign to deny the Jews the most basic human right of all, the right to exist.
Richard Landes: The Failures of Journalism in the 21st Century
I am finally composing my long promised book, They’re So Smart cause We’re so Stupid: A Medievalist Guide to the Jihadi Cogwar of the 21st Century. It begins with a list of the “Astoundingly Stupid Statements of the 21st Century” (#ASSO21C). I’ll be posting material from the book as I compose it. Part I introduces the key Players: Triumphalist Muslims, the Global Progressive Left (GPL), and the lethal own-goal, journalists. The following is the opening to the third chapter:
Lethal, Own-Goal, Dhimmi, Journalists: The Bane of the West in the 21st century
The Failures of Journalism in the 21st Century
Towards the end of 2000, a professional failure of epic proportions took place among Western journalists. This failure began among Middle East correspondents reporting on the conflict, which broke out anew in late September 2000, between Israel and her Arab (triumphalist) neighbors. In this phase of “lethal journalism” Western reporters, almost as a pack, systematically reported Palestinian accusations against Israel – lethal narratives – as if they were eminently credible, indeed as if they actually happened, in other words as news. These reports had their desired effect in the conflict, supporting the “underdog” and “leveling the playing field,” prolonging the war, protecting the Palestinians from Israeli efforts to prevent their terror attacks, and severely damaging Israel’s global image.
The impact, however, went far beyond what these reporters imagined. They had an electric effect on Muslims the world over, including the West. Given overwhelming proof – the Western media reported it – of the victimization of Muslims in Palestine, many a triumphalist Muslim awoke to the siren call of Jihad. Demonstrations in the West made ample room for a newly aggressive Muslim Street, and recruiting for Jihad made great headway in the heart of the enemy. In particular, Europe’s largely unassimilated Muslim population radicalized significantly.
Indeed, lethal journalists, in their cognitive disorientation, didn’t realize that, in purveying Palestinian propaganda as news, they greatly amplified not Palestinian “nationalist” efforts to get their “self-determination,” but instead they mainstreamed Jihadi war propaganda that targeted their own societies as much as Israeli – all kufar to be either converted, dhimmified, or eliminated. In so acting, they engaged in an unprecedented form of war journalism, not the traditional patriotic version of lying for your own side, but own-goal war journalism, where the journalists lied for their side’s enemies.

Shmuley Boteach: No Holds Barred: Hitler the British Zionist
To be sure, the Labour Party has produced extremely good friends of the Jewish state, like Tony Blair. But that now seems a million years ago and leaders of the party are now spewing disgusting anti-Jewish drivel.
The same Ken Livingstone who said Hitler was a Zionist then went on to declare that the State of Israel was “a great catastrophe.” The rot in the Labour Party starts at the top, with Jeremy Corbyn sharing platforms with supporters of Hamas, a terrorist organization committed to the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews everywhere. Just a few days ago British Prime Minister David Cameron challenged Corbyn to disavow comments he made in which he referred to Hamas and Hezbollah as his “friends.” Corbyn refused to do so.
Just a few weeks ago the National Union of Students elected a new president, Malia Bouattia, who described the University of Birmingham as “something of a Zionist outpost,” complained that the government’s anti-extremism policy was fueled by the “Zionist lobby,” and was endorsed by the anti-Semitic Muslim Public Affairs Committee. That someone of such strong anti-Jewish views can be elected to the national leadership of Britain’s students is astonishing. Or perhaps not. British academics have also been at the forefront of the campaign to boycott Israeli academic institutions.
According to the Metropolitan Police, 2015 was the worst year ever for anti-Semitic attacks in London, which increased 61 percent from the previous year. The Campaign Against Anti-Semitism (CAA) reported that 2015 “saw the most anti-Semitic crime ever recorded in Britain, with a 26% rise in anti-Semitic crime and a 51% leap in violence against Jews, but a reduction in the number of anti-Semites charged by police.” The group also found that “25% of British Jews have considered leaving Britain in the past two years due to anti-Semitism and 77% have witnessed anti-Semitism disguised as a political comment about Israel.” The situation has grown so serious that the CAA said “Britain is at a tipping point: unless anti-Semitism is met with zero tolerance, it will continue to grow and British Jews may increasingly question their place in their own country.”
Indeed.
Shami Chakrabarti praised Moazzam Begg as “a wonderful advocate for human rights and in particular for human liberty”
CagePrisoners, or CAGE as it is now called, will be well known most of you. It is an organisation which we have covered extensively. A strong supporter of the deceased Al Qaeda recruiter, Anwar Al Awlaki, its main function is to advocate for those convicted of terrorist offences. The London Muslim Centre is also a familiar organisation, with close ties to the theocratic south Asian political party, Jamaat-e-Islami. It is a longstanding hoster and promoter of events featuring preachers who have supported terrorism, called for gays to be killed and advocated the establishment of a theocratic Islamic state. The Centre for the Study of Terrorism is an organisation which was founded by Dr Kamal el-Helbawy, who also established the Muslim Brotherhood aligned Muslim Association of Britain, who has supported the killing of Jewish children as “future soldiers”.
What, one might fairly ask, was Shami Chakrabati doing addressing a meeting featuring organisations which advocate hatred and theocratic politics: the precise opposite of the liberal politics of human rights?
A human rights campaigner might end up on a platform with speakers who opposed human rights, in order to campaign in relation to a specific human rights issue. Although I can’t imagine it happening, it would at least theoretically be possible for such a person to support the claims of the English Defence League founder, “Tommy Robinson”, that he is the subject of a politically motivated campaign of police harassment. But I wouldn’t expect such a human rights campaigner profusely to lavish praise Tommy Robinson, or to hold him up as a figure to be admired.
This is precisely what Shami Chakrabati did when she shared a platform with Moazzam Begg:
“It is always a privilege to follow Moazzam Begg and Gareth Pierce, so it feels a little like Groundhog Day. I’ve been following them for some years now. But I want to speak a little optimistically, because I think we could all do with a little optimism at 8 o’clock on a weeknight, when we’ve been sitting listening to some pretty awful stuff. I want to say that I’ve been following them for many years, but there is a difference. When I started speaking on platforms with Gareth Pierce and Mr Begg, the Mr Begg was Mr Begg senior: because his son was locked away in Guantanamo Bay. And now I share the platform with Moazzam Begg, and that is a source of hope and optimism for the future. And you hear what a wonderful advocate he is for human rights and in particular for human liberty.”
Hypocrite Left: Free Speech For Hate Preachers — But Not Cartoonists
Danish left wingers who called for the prosecution of Muhammed cartoonists now block plans to ban hate preachers from Denmark.
Controversial plans for a blacklist that would ban hate preachers from Denmark have exposed leftwing hypocrisy, as the people and parties who called for hate speech laws to prosecute the cartoonists who drew Mohammed are now citing “freedom of expression” as a reason to oppose the ban.
Under the proposals, the country’s immigration service would compile a list of religious speakers and imams who, as Politico reports would be denied visas for “encouraging terrorism and anti-democratic attitudes”.
Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said he hoped the list would be revised regularly in cooperation with other countries, and cited Britain’s ban on speakers deemed extremist by the government as inspiration.
Free speech advocate Flemming Rose noted this week that hypocritically many of the people opposing the planned blacklist, in the name of free speech, were ten years ago calling for the prosecution of the artists who drew Muhammad.
As cultural editor of Jyllands-Posten, Mr. Rose commissioned the Muhammad cartoons that Muslims around the world reacted to with protests and violence, leaving over 200 people dead.
Neo-Nazi Ken O'Keefe Spreads Anti-Semitic Hatred University of Toronto
On April 29th, neo-Nazi Ken O’Keefe took to the JJR Macleod Auditorium at the University of Toronto to deliver a talk rife with anti-Semitic tropes.
O’Keefe spoke at the Canadian university for over an hour – tantamount to a tirade of quotes straight out of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion – reciting anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. These included “Jews run the media,” “the Jews control everything,” and of course, “they run the courts and the banks.”
O’Keefe’s erroneous accusation that Jews collaborate with one another in pursuit of world domination not only echoes the exact narrative falsely projected onto Jews by Hitler’s regime, it also testifies to the rampant anti-Semitism brewing on several North American campuses. O’Keefe did not address an empty crowd, nor did he offer to pay the University of Toronto to let him come and speak - quite the contrary. There were multiple rounds of applause throughout his talk. This demonstrates that some North Americans are not only intrigued, but buying into narrative of malevolent Jewish machinations.
B’nai Brith Canada – the Canadian section of the oldest Jewish service organization in the world – lambasted the event for its blatant and open expression of anti-Semitic paroxysm. The organization’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Mostyn, stated, “O’Keefe represents a type of virulent and murderous anti-Semitism not usually heard in Canada’s public spaces.” Mostyn continued, “He propagates the malicious lie of Jewish control over the media, government, judicial system and financial sector, and even accuses Jews of assassinating former U.S. president John. F. Kennedy and staging the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Worst of all is his deplorable claim that Jews invented the Holocaust in order to ‘steal Palestine from the Palestinians.’”
O’Keefe’s lecture at the University of Toronto was just his latest stop on his “From The Heart” tour. Thankfully, he didn’t leave without providing a plethora of evidence showcasing his false, hate-filled, and lunatic anti-Semitic narrative.
Panama Papers reveal George Soros' deep money ties to secretive weapons, intel investment firm
Soros, 86, is worth an estimated $25 billion. His Open Society Institute is one of ICIJ’s main funders, granting it $1.5 million last year. The Panama Papers data reveals only the tip of Soros' offshore iceberg, the Quantum Group of Funds. The ICIJ’s leader, journalist Gerard Ryle, said he had not noticed Soros’ companies in the Offshore Leaks database until FoxNews.com called the matter to his attention.
“I suspect we would have more information [on Soros] because the public database … does not contain the underlying data,” Ryle said in an email FoxNews.com.
FoxNews.com has requested access to that data.
Because it is based offshore, the Quantum Group of Funds is not normally subject to regulation by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. But in the mid-1990s, Soros Capital bought several SEC-regulated firms, an act which required it to disclose the basic design of the Quantum network of interlocking offshore companies and bank accounts that shield Soros’ billions.
Soros Capital set up an offshore company in the Cayman Islands for the purpose of investing private equity with the Carlyle Group, alongside members of Saudi Arabia’s Bin Laden family. Carlyle’s partners include ex-heads of state and former CIA officials. The private equity partnership specializes in buying and selling weapons manufacturing and intelligence gathering companies with government and military contracts and it also uses secret offshore companies to conduct business.
Detroit Jews ask: Are settlement boycotts the same as BDS?
For the second year in a row, the Detroit area’s Walk for Israel has rebuffed the sponsorship of left-wing pro-Israel groups because of their support for boycotting settlements.
At the heart of the dispute is a question of definitions: Is support of a boycott targeting Jewish enterprises beyond Israel’s 1967 borders the same as backing the blanket economic and cultural boycott of Israel called for by the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement?
Andre Douville, the chairman of the coalition organizing the walk, said Partners for Progressive Israel and Americans for Peace Now fit the coalition’s definition of supporting the BDS movement.
“Simply put, our advocacy and policy statement says that any organization that supports any form of BDS would not be accepted as a cosponsor,” Douville told JTA on Friday, two days before the event, which celebrates Israel’s independence. “They want to argue that they only support it for business in the occupied territories.”
The left-wing groups – citing different criteria – say that while they support a boycott of settlement goods, they vigorously reject boycotts of Israel.
Durham University Jewish Students’ Doors Vandalized With Swastika Graffiti, Auschwitz Reference
Students at Durham University in North East England discovered antisemitic graffiti on their doors this weekend, The Jewish Chronicle reported on Monday.
According to the report, swastikas and upside-down crosses were drawn on the outside of their student accommodations, alongside the words “rape Ali,” with an arrow pointing underneath. One student house was vandalized with an SS sign and a drawing of an ape, with the words “Muslim monkey” and “Auschwitz” written on the walls.
After the targeted students complained to police and the student council, Durham University Jewish Society President Simon Zeffert said he would be “swiftly” reporting the antisemitic graffiti to the Community Security Trust, a British charity that deals with security for the Jewish community, the Jewish Chronicle said.
“It’s deeply disturbing to see these disgusting symbols being graffitied in Durham,” Zeffert said. “It doesn’t just affect Jewish people, it’s hostile to all students.”
Anti-Israel Students at Connecticut College ‘Occupy’ Office of School President in Protest Over Investigation of Mock Eviction Notices
A group of anti-Israel students at Connecticut College is “occupying” the office of the school’s president in protest over an investigation into mock eviction notices they posted across campus accusing the Jewish state of a series of crimes.
An alumnus who asked to remain anonymous due to his tracking of anti-Israel activity at his alma mater told The Algemeiner, “This is a group of students who put up mock eviction notices that were factually challenged. It was done during finals and some students were alarmed by their tactics.”
As The Algemeiner reported, students returning to their dorms last Monday encountered fake eviction notices put up by Conn Students in Solidarity with Palestine (CSSP). “Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes is RACIST, is part of a project of ETHNIC CLEANSING and COLONIZATION, and is ILLEGAL,” part of the notice stated.
In response to the notices, Connecticut College Interim Dean of Equity and Inclusion David Canton sent out a campus-wide email, stating, “Seeing these posters in residential common areas, particularly this close to final exams, has been disturbing to our students. I am writing to let you know that my office is carrying out an investigation of the incident.”
Homosexuality still illegal in Lebanon, but North Carolina boycotters not boycotting
At least 50 LGBT activists staged a protest outside the Hbeish police station in Beirut, Lebanon, to protest anti-homosexual law.
Article 534 “criminalizes ‘unnatural sexual intercourse,’ which is punishable by up to one year of imprisonment.”
This news comes after businesses, celebrities, and musical acts decided to boycott North Carolina over their decision to not allow transgender people to use any bathroom they want.
But look what I found! Some of these businesses and people have not boycotted Lebanon even though homosexuals can receive jail time. Apparently, the ability to not use the bathroom of your choice is worse than police throwing you in prison.
Bryan Adams boycotted North Carolina, but he performed in Lebanon in 2010, 2011, and 2015.
Deutsche Bank also boycotted North Carolina. However, they have a location in Beirut. In 2012, the American University in Beirut announced that the bank launched an annual MBA scholarship!
PayPal pulled out of North Carolina, but still exists in Lebanon. Pepsi also remains in Lebanon without wanting anything to do with North Carolina. Other hypocrites include Hyatt hotels and Hewlett-Packard.
Methodist Church Rejects Four Anti-Israel Boycott Resolutions
The United Methodist Church, one of the largest denominations in the United States, voted against four resolutions calling for divestment in companies that do business in Israel at their quadrennial convention in Portland over the weekend.
The resolutions called on the church to divest from Catepillar, Hewlett-Packard and Motorola. Previous similar divestment resolutions failed in both 2008 and 2012.
Democratic frontrunner and lifelong Methodist Hillary Clinton wrote an open letter last week calling such boycotts “counterproductive to the pursuit of peace.” Many observers believed that her comments were related to the boycott proposals.
Many states have also expressed their opposition to boycotts of Israel in recent months. Last week, Iowa became the eighth state to enact legislation preventing the state from affiliating with boycotters of Israel. The New Jersey state senate passed a similar measure last week.
Boycott supporters often portray their movement as part of a protest against Israeli policies, but critics have accused it of being discriminatory in tone and intention, and pointed out that many of its leaders have publicly affirmed that they seek Israel’s destruction. BDS co-founder Omar Barghouti, an opponent of the two-state solution, said in 2014 that Palestinians have a right to “resistance by any means, including armed resistance,” while leading activist As’ad Abu Khalil acknowledged in 2012 that “the real aim of BDS is to bring down the state of Israel.”
Despite Israel’s “war on human rights activists”, state gives award to radical org’s founder
Of course, the absurd claim that Israeli authorities are “persecuting” human rights activists is amplified frequently in the British media, despite the fact that nearly two dozen foreign funded, radical-left ‘human rights’ NGOs (some of which call for the end of the Jewish state) operate freely in the country.
Interestingly, the decision to grant the award to Shulman was approved by Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who Shulman once characterized – in a New York Review of Books article on Israel’s putative war on civil society – as “one of the most extreme spokesmen of the fanatical right”.
So, Shulman was given the ultimate “establishment” award by the “fanatical right” pro-settlement minister despite the fact that he is arguably the embodiment of just the kind of “peace and human rights activist” he claims is being persecuted by the “establishment”, pro-settlement right.
Our guess is that Indy editors didn’t notice the irony.
Three inaccuracies and an omission in one BBC News sentence
The sentence below is to be found in an article published on the BBC News website’s Middle East page on May 8th:accuracy
“In October last year, an Eritrean immigrant was shot and beaten to death by an angry crowd after being mistaken for an Arab militant in the town of Beersheba, prompting concern about mob reactions to people thought to be suspicious.”
Habtom Zerhom was not an “immigrant” but an Eritrean asylum seeker. The investigation into the incident showed that the cause of his death was internal bleeding from a gunshot wound – i.e. he was not “beaten to death” as claimed by the BBC. The incident occurred when Zerhom was mistaken for a second terrorist – not an “Arab militant” – during a terror attack at Be’er Sheva bus station on October 18th 2015 which is completely erased from this portrayal of events.
In addition to those omissions and inaccuracies, the link provided leads to a BBC report from October 2015 which, as has been noted here before, inaccurately represents the victim’s name and age, calling him “Mr Mulu” aged 19.
So much for editorial standards of accuracy.
AFP's Lopsided Account of Slain Palestinian Teen
When a media outlet reports on a fact sheet published by a big international NGO, what is its responsibility to readers? Do journalists have an obligation to flag shortcomings in NGO reports? AFP, apparently, thinks not.
In a widely published article, AFP summarized a UNICEF fact sheet claiming that "25 Palestinian children killed in 3 months." The UNICEF provides identifying details (date and location) in just two out of the 25 alleged cases. AFP faithfully relays UNICEF's flawed account of one of the two cases:
UNICEF cited the example on October 25 in Hebron in the West Bank of a 17-year-old girl who was "taken by IDF (Israel Defence Forces) soldiers for a search, shot with at least five bullets and killed".
"Israeli authorities said that she had attempted to stab a policeman, however an eyewitness stated that she was not presenting any threat at the time she was shot, and was shouting that she did not have a knife," it said.

Relying solely on the UNICEF report, AFP failed to fulfill its duty to independently fact-check. A quick search reveals that Amnesty International, which has no great love for Israel, noted this relevant information concerning the Oct. 25 Hebron incident:
A photo of Ershied’s body shows a knife lying near the body, and the Israeli police spokesperson has stated that she attempted to stab a border policeman.
In other words, there is a photograph that supports the Israeli account of events, a photograph that AFP ignored.
AFP Corrects Photo Caption on Palestinian Refugee
As CAMERA noted earlier, Aisha, who is reportedly 53 years old, could not have fled or been driven out of her Beersheva home 68 years ago, as the caption strongly suggests. She possibly could have lived in Beersheva and decided to move to Gaza for marriage, for example, but then she is not a "refugee" forced out of her home in the 1948 war, as the caption clearly implies.
CAMERA contacted AFP editors, asking if Aisha was an inhabitant of Beersheva. If so, why did AFP conflate her decision to move with the fate of Palestinian Arabs who left in 1948 and became refugees?
In response to CAMERA's clarification request, AFP editors have commendably corrected the caption in the agency's photo archive. The new wording now identifies Aisha as a "Palestinian refugee … who comes from a family originally from Beersheva" and adds that she "shows a collection of keys she said she inherited from her parents of their home and shops in the largest city in the Negev desert before 1948."
Unfortunately, AFP editors did not alert subscribers to the fact that the caption was corrected. Though editors did change the original caption in the archive, it is not marked with a "clarification" or "correction" note, and they did not republish the image today with the correct caption.
Breitbart’s ‘Renegade Jew’ Disgrace
But the real offense here is not Horowitz’s laughable defense of Trump’s behavior or his vapid policy positions. It’s his attempt to wrap him in the Star of David and to somehow brand his opponents as traitors to the pro-Israel cause that should trouble everyone including those that believe Trump is the lesser of two evils in 2016.
Horowitz is right to label the Iran nuclear deal as a threat to Israel as well as to the West. It was one of the seminal issues of the last four years and one on which Trump was notably silent until he started running for president. If he is elected, perhaps it will be one topic on which he won’t be as “unpredictable” as he promises to be on most issues. If so, that would be good for both Israel and the United States.
The deal didn’t happen on Hillary Clinton’s watch at the State Department and might never have occurred without her being replaced by John Kerry, but she still should be judged for being one of its supporters. On this point, as with Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians, we know what we would be getting with Clinton. She is less willing to bash Israel than President Obama or Bernie Sanders, but the person who served as the “designated yeller” at Prime Minister Netanyahu can’t be counted among its reliable defenders.
By contrast, Trump is a mystery. He claims at times to be a fervent supporter of Israel especially when he reads from scripts. But at other times, his deal-making hubris makes him sound as if he might repeat the folly of Obama and Kerry while proclaiming himself to be “neutral” between Israel and the Palestinians. His isolationist tendencies must also trouble supporters of Israel since an American retreat from the Middle East (other than a war against ISIS that Trump claims he will fight without intervening in the region) will weaken the Jewish state and strengthen foes like Iran. The Republican Party has become a bedrock supporter of Israel in recent decades while many Democrats — especially their liberal base — have drifted away from that position. But the nomination of an isolationist like Trump has undermined the thesis that the two parties are so different on foreign policy.
Again, it is possible to argue from these facts, as some ardent members of the pro-Israel community have done, that Trump is the better choice from the point of view of strengthening the U.S.-Israel alliance. But it is not possible to conclude that someone who believes Trump can’t be counted on or viewed as much of an improvement over Clinton is a traitor to Israel. It is certainly not possible to say that to Kristol, who has devoted so much effort to support of Israel throughout his career and especially as a leader of the opposition to Obama’s policies.
In the last two decades, Horowitz’s publishing and activist projects have prioritized support for Israel, which is why his confession in the last paragraph of his piece that he has never visited the Jewish state is puzzling. But even if his concern for Israel should be considered both sincere and heartfelt that doesn’t justify his use of Stalinist dialectical tactics to smear Kristol.
Trump Supporters Vs. the ‘Renegade Jew’
Let’s give credit where it’s due: As far as troll-baiting headlines go, “Renegade Jew” is pretty excellent—and yes, morally reprehensible, too.
David Horowitz’s attack on William Kristol on Breitbart.com, in a piece called “Bill Kristol: Republican Spoiler, Renegade Jew,” is a jambalaya of tedious media self-references if you excise the “renegade Jew” bit: A right-wing figure attacks a second, more prominent right-wing figure on an alt-right website—you’re asleep already, aren’t you? But when served with a pithy, two-word epithet and a frisson of the world’s oldest hatred—Jew hatred, that is—a hit piece on the editor of The Weekly Standard is enough to foment a trending topic on Twitter. It spawned an unintentionally lyrical turn of phrase that seems destined for ironic re-appropriation.
In context, “renegade Jew” was clearly intended as a blunt ethnic slur, and had apparently little to do with the substance of Horowitz’s loopy and disorganized attacks on Kristol, who is notably anti-Trump. The story, which pilloried the “renegad”e Kristol for reportedly organizing a third-party conservative challenger to Trump and Hillary Clinton, included a lengthy digression about Mike Tyson’s autobiography, and a series of bizarre asides about a phantom U.S. intervention in Egypt which did not in fact occur, at least not in real life as the majority of the non-David Horowitz community understands it.
The logic of the “renegade Jew” headline becomes clear only in the piece’s final paragraph. “I am a Jew who has never been to Israel and has never been a Zionist in the sense of believing that Jews can rid themselves of Jew hatred by having their own nation state,” Horowitz (who also wrote his own headline) felt it necessary to state. “I am also an American (and an American first), whose country is threatened with destruction by the same enemies” as Israel, he continues, specifically “Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, ISIS, and Hamas.”
Czech Jews call Terezin memorial addresses nationalist, xenophobic
The Czech Republic’s Jewish community has condemned some of the addresses delivered at a memorial ceremony at the former Nazi concentration camp in Terezin as anti-German, nationalist and xenophobic.
In a statement released Sunday, the Federation of the Czech Jewish communities denounced the keynote address delivered earlier that day by the head of the Czech Senate, Milan Stech, who said Nazi crimes could not be compared to violence committed by Czechs against Germans after World War II.
“Crimes [during the forced expulsion of Germans from postwar Czechoslovakia] were committed by individuals, whereas Nazi crimes during the occupation of the Czech territory were part of the official and carefully designed political campaign of the German state,” Stech said in his speech.
Describing the address as anti-German and nationalist, Czech Jewish groups said it did not belong at such a memorial event.
Some 3 million ethnic Germans were forcibly expelled from Czechoslovakia after the war in a move that remains a sensitive issue in Czech-German relations.
British boxer apologizes over anti-Semitic rant
On Monday, Fury issued a statement apologizing for the remarks and said, "I am in no way a racist or bigot."
"I apologize to anyone who may have taken offence at any of my comments," he said, according to the Daily Mail. "I said some things, which may have hurt some people, which as a Christian man is not something I would ever want to do.
"Though it is not an excuse, sometimes the heightened media scrutiny has caused me to act out in public. I mean no harm or disrespect to anyone and I know more is expected of me as an ambassador of British boxing and I promise in future to hold myself up to the highest possible standard,” he continued.
"Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am in no way a racist or bigot and I hope the public accept this apology," stated Fury.
Comedian Louis C.K. to perform in Jerusalem in August
It’s not a joke this time. Comedian Louis C.K. is coming to Israel to perform on Thursday, August 18, at Jerusalem’s Payis Arena.
The tickets, ranging in price from NIS 280 to NIS 730, went on sale at 6 p.m. Monday at the Louis CK website.
The provocative comedian is known for not shying away from any subject, be it sex, religion, pedophilia, politics, incest and other controversial topics. He was a writer for comedian Conan O’Brien and “The Chris Rock Show” (for which he won an Emmy as part of the writing team).
In April, C.K. told radio shock jock Howard Stern that he would come to Israel to perform in a large venue such as a soccer stadium to “get as much money over there as I would here at home.”
A Directorial Triumph: Coldplay gets Israeli direction in new music video
Released on Monday, the video has already garnered close to 3 million views, and is the third single released from Coldplay's new album titled A Head Full of Dreams.
The 4-minute short is rich in surreal imagery which, if broken down into individual shots, could easily adorn the walls of a hip gallery or make its way onto the pages of a coffee-table book. The striking visuals transform elements of daily life into magical scenarios reminiscent of dreams, playing with proportions in the realms of air, land, sea, and space.
Chris Martin, lead vocalist of the band, spoke highly of the video prior to its release in a radio interview. He referred to it as "one of the best videos...ever made," and insinuated that even if sound were to be removed from the clip, the brilliance of its imagery would remain.
"I just saw it [the video] and was like 'I can't believe that was our video,'" Martin said. "If that was someone elses, I'd be so jealous."
Martin described the newly released single as Coldplay's, "kind of...defining credo."
Israel’s LiveU to beam Summer Olympics events worldwide
The Israeli Olympic team may or may not win medals at the Summer Olympics in Brazil this year, but one Israeli start-up is tapped to come home with accolades.
Israel’s LiveU cellular-based live video transmission technology will allow broadcasters to beam images from Brazil around the world in real time, with little latency and superb picture quality, according to customer William Albarracin, who was responsible for technology at the 2014 soccer World Cup. also in Brazil.
“LiveU exceeded our expectations,” said Albarracin. “It gave us the mobility to go live from anywhere at any time. We knew the Brazilian landscape was challenging, yet we hit 9 Mbps in some areas. Also, the management system, LiveU Central, gave us flexibility and geo-location that allowed us to maximize the use of units in the field.”
Headquartered in the Tel Aviv suburb of Kfar Saba, with a US office in Hackensack, New Jersey, LiveU has been around since 2006, and is still the only company offering a remote uplink solution for broadcast-quality video without requiring a satellite or wired Internet connection.
LiveU is currently the only company offering a robust transmission solution for broadcasters, consisting of up to 14 cellular (3G/4G — LTE/WiMAX) modems over multiple carriers, as well as multiple LAN and even BGAN satellite connections (as backup). The solution works with any camera, and the system’s bonded modems (both 3G and 4G) aggregate all data connections simultaneously to achieve high bandwidth and smooth transmission, even as bandwidth and signal levels change across the different connections.
In spirit of Ayn Rand, Israeli entrepreneurship to get a boost
There are many contests and competitions in Israel each year that seek the entrepreneur with the best idea, business, or skill set. But the winner of the Atlas Award – to be given out Tuesday in Tel Aviv by the Israeli chapter of the Ayn Rand Institute – will be able to lay claim to the title of “most entrepreneurial entrepreneur.”
The institute is named for Ayn Rand, the novelist and philosopher who rose to fame based on her promotion of the philosophy of Objectivism, which says each person is responsible for his own life and welfare and must not rely on the state or even other people to make his way through life.
Israeli entrepreneurs are usually not as self-sufficient as Rand’s ideal man or woman; the tech community has a reputation of helping out others, and Israelis tend to root for each other’s success. Nevertheless, believes Boaz Arad, chairman of the institute’s local branch, the independent tendencies many Israeli entrepreneurs display – thinking outside the box, not being afraid of failure, and a general willingness to upset the existing order of technology and business – should be rewarded.
Israeli divers find largest trove of Roman shipwreck treasure in decades
A chance discovery by two divers uncovered Israel's biggest find of underwater Roman-era artifacts in three decades, archaeologists said on Monday as the priceless objects were showcased for the first time.
The treasures were found last month by divers Ran Feinstein and Ofer Raanan when they came across an ancient shipwreck near the port of Caesarea.
Standing next to his diving buddy, Raanan recounted the moment the pair realised they had discovered something special.
"It took us a couple of seconds to understand what was going on," Raanan recalled. He said they left the first sculpture on the seabed when they found it, but then when they discovered a second, they realised it was something special and brought it to the surface. They later searched the area and uncovered more ancient artifacts.
"It was amazing. I dive here every other weekend and I never found anything like that ever," he said.
The Israel Antiquities Authority sent its divers to investigate and recover the precious Roman-era cargo, which includes bronze statues, lamps, jars, animal-shaped objects, anchors and thousands of coins with images of Roman emperors Constantine and Licinius.
Some of the objects date to the fourth century, while others are from the first and second centuries, said Jacob Sharvit, director of marine archaeology at the IAA.
Who’s your daddy? Conference traces Jewish DNA back to Holy Land
If you’ve ever wondered how Jews got to Finland, Scotland or New Zealand, there’s a speaker who can answer that question at this summer’s International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies conference in Seattle, Washington.
The six-day event with 325 venues, a Jewish film festival, and a new track — Genealogy for Educators — will spark your curiosity and help you on your genealogical journey, whether you’re sleuthing for ancestors or sending your DNA by mail hoping for a match.
Last year’s conference was held in Jerusalem, and though organizers can’t promise such a rain-free experience this August in the often-overcast Pacific Northwest, they do warn that once you dabble in this ever-expanding science, in any case you won’t want to leave the building.
“People have used the word obsession and they’re not far off,” said conference co-chair and senior research manager for Salt Lake City-based Ancestry Pro Genealogists, Dr. Janette Silverman.
“It’s costly, for sure — and those TV shows are highly addictive — but genealogical research places our family in the saga of their history and times. If we can find something that speaks to us, we can make the history personal,” said Silverman.
PreOccupiedTerritory: Hipsters Call Sefirah-Beards Cultural Appropriation (satire)
Avant-garde and trendy populations are voicing disapproval of the Jewish practice among men not to shave or take haircuts for most of the seven-week period that begins with Passover, saying that the custom is an inauthentic appropriation of their culture.
Hipsters in this forward-looking Mediterranean city expressed their distaste for the phenomenon known as the Sefirah beard, the facial hair that many religiously observant men allow to grow once Passover begins, and maintain until either thirty-three days have elapsed or until Shavuot, the next major festival a full seven weeks after Passover. While a good number of such men always sport a beard, it is the adoption of the beard-growing practice by the normally clean-shaven that the trendy personalities find problematic.
“It’s cultural appropriation is what it is,” insisted Guy Bar, 26, a pottery enthusiast. “Fedoras? Retro clothing? Glasses? Come on – that’s OUR style. I’ve been growing this beard for three years now, and now these Johnny-come-latelies decide they want a piece of this action. Sorry, gentlemen, but you don’t get what a beard is all about, and have no right to grow one.”
The Jewish practice of refraining from haircuts and shaving during Sefirat HaOmer, as the period is known, stems from several sources, the most famous of which invokes the second-century-CE deaths of twenty-four thousand disciples of the famous Rabbi Akiva during that time, as the result of a plague. The plague suddenly ceased on day thirty-three, Lag BaOmer, which is marked as a minor holiday. However, the span preceding Lag BaOmer features a number of practices associated with mourning, including refraining from cutting hair, and some Jewish men, especially among the Hasidim, extend the practices to a full seven weeks. The Omer period is marked by an attention to daily personal development and interpersonal relations, as a way of remedying the disregard that people had for one another to which Jewish tradition attributes the plague.

UN FAO says antisemitic goodwill ambassador no longer associated with organization

I received this response to my inquiry from the UN FAO about Majida el-Roumi, their singer who harbors antisemitic opinions:

Dear Elder,

Thank you for contacting us.

Please note that, as of July 2015, Mrs El Roumi is no longer an FAO Goodwill Ambassador and her comments do not reflect FAO’s values and principles.

Regards,

FAO Goodwill Ambassadors team
This may or may not be true; I cannot find any more recent mention of her on the FAO website.

But her biography on her personal website still proudly says that she is the goodwill ambassador for FAO.

Boris Johnson buried report on air pollution near London schools

From the Guardian today:
An air quality report that was not published by Boris Johnson while he was mayor of London demonstrates that 433 schools in the capital are located in areas that exceed EU limits for nitrogen dioxide pollution – and that four-fifths of those are in deprived areas.
The report, Analysing Air Pollution Exposure in London, said that in 2010, 433 of the city’s 1,777 primary schools were in areas where pollution breached the EU limits for NO2. Of those, 83% were considered deprived schools, with more than 40% of pupils on free school meals.
A spokeswoman for Johnson’s successor, Sadiq Khan, said the new mayor could not understand why the research had not been published when it was completed more than two-and-a-half years ago.
This reminds me of the campaign to end the use of lead in petrol.

I remember once hearing Des Wilson, who spearheaded it, saying that the key to victory was getting the research published. So damning was it that, once it was in the public domain, the battle was effectively over.

It has been argued, incidentally, that the fall in juvenile offending in recent years can be put down to the removal of lead, and its damaging effect on the brain, from the environment.

“One of the Most Disturbing and Cleverly Conceived Cases of anti-Israel Propaganda and Delegitimization Masquerading as Art” (Daphne Anson)

Playwright Samah

As I reported on my own blog on 7 April (http://daphneanson.blogspot.com.au/2016/04/in-australia-schoolkids-study.html) “the play City by the Sea, by poet, writer and activist Samah Sabawi, a Gaza-born (1967) Australian/Canadian, is now on the 2016 playlist for school students taking the Victorian Certificate of Education [the school-leaving certificate in the Australian state of Victoria].  It means that students in years 11 and 12 will be attending performances of the play at La Mama Theatre in Melbourne in May….”

I quoted at some length from an official document by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) which says, inter alia, teachers should be aware that in some instances sensitivity might be needed where particular issues or themes that are explored may be challenging for students. Teachers are advised to familiarise themselves with the treatment of these issues and themes within the context and world of the play prior to students viewing the play and/or studying the playscript. This might involve reading the playscript, talking with the theatre company, researching the playscript, the work of the playwright, director and/or company, attending a preview performance and/or discussing the matter with the school administration. Information provided in this notice about themes and/or language used in specific plays is a guide only. In some plays, suggestive and potentially offensive words and phrases are used. This language may invite adverse comment from some areas of the community”.

I quoted a report in the Sydney Morning Herald that notes “A longtime vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, Sabawi recently made headlines when she was taken off the panel at an Israel-Palestine debate at the Wheeler Centre, only to be promptly reinstated four hours later. At the time, Sabawi said that she thought her ejection from the panel was due to pressure from those who object to her support for the BDS [Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions] movement against Israel” and continues “The City and the Sea is undeniably political …”and from a review in The Age of Melbourne that remarks “This gripping play is an act of resistance that implores its audience to take heed.” And I observed: “Tailor-made, wouldn't you say, for teachers who may be left-wing anti-Zionists, and indeed any teacher who relies for information about the Middle East on such biased sources as the Fairfax Press (The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald), the ABC and SBS, wittingly or unwittingly to poison young minds?”
I went on to cite the jubilation of those connected with the play: “Congratulations to all of us!   Palestinian play highlighting challenges of life in Gaza during the war of 2008-2009 has been selected for the 2016 Victorian Certificate of Education Drama list.   The play Tales of a City by the Sea by Palestinian Australian playwright Samah Sabawi was one of 16 of more than 50 submissions selected for the 3 VCE Playlists.   As a result, it will be seen and studied by hundreds of year 11 & 12 Theatre students in Victoria and it will be published by Currency Press and disseminated among these students.”

And when I realised that nobody in the Australian Jewish communal leadership seemed to be aware of the play, much less its inclusion on this year’s curriculum in Victoria, I (and perhaps others) alerted Dr Dvir Abramovich, an academic who chairs the Anti-Defamation League, and is one of the most effective and dedicated figures on the Australian Jewish communal leadership scene today.  Having read the transcript of the play he has roundly condemned it, declaring on the Special Broadcasting Station (SBS), an ethnic minorities’ and foreign-language public broadcaster not known for any great sympathy for Israel: “This is one of the most disturbing and cleverly conceived cases of anti-Israel propaganda and delegitimization masquerading as art that I’ve seen.  I think it's very troubling that this skewed play is now part of the VCE curriculum and it will certainly poison the minds of impressionable young people.”

To quote The Age (http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/vce-play-accused-of-being-antiisrael-propaganda-20160509-gopz96.html): ‘The play is one of six selected for year 12 students studying VCE drama. Students will watch the performance and study the text throughout the year.  Dr Dvir Abramovich, chair of the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation Commission, a body raising awareness about anti-Semitism and hate speech, said the play portrays Israel as a "blood-thirsty, evil war-machine", without any explanation for the bombings, or the violence perpetrated by the Palestinian camp.  He took aim at the authority for including the "unabashedly one-sided" play in the curriculum, claiming the content was "anti-Israel propaganda".  "Nowhere to be found is the Israeli perspective ... the suicide bombings inside Israel, the deaths of more than 160 children who were forced to dig tunnels by Hamas, the offers of peace by Israel, the thousands of rockets fired at Israel from Gaza," he said. "What this play does, amongst other things, is to create a tremendously hostile climate in which any Jewish student who will see the play with their classmates … will be ashamed and worried about expressing any support for Israel or even admit that they have a link with the Jewish state."’

The Australian (behind a pay wall) has quoted Dr Abramovich as saying “I am genuinely concerned for any Jewish-Australian pupils who will have to deal with the outrage and visceral contempt of their classmates at school.”

And the ABC reports (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-05-10/'anti-israel'-play-in-vce-curriculum-government-questioned/7402176) the Opposition Liberal Party ‘has used a budget hearing to attack the Government over the inclusion of a play in the VCE curriculum that has been labelled anti-Israel…. Jewish groups have said the play is a one-sided depiction of the conflict, and conservative MPs seized on the issue during a budget hearing today. Liberal Tim Smith questioned why the play had been included in the curriculum… "I want to know why you've got clearly an anti-Israel play being taught to our children. This is a real concern from the Jewish community about clearly a play that is anti-Israel, that has been authored by an anti-Israeli activist. Why is this being taught in our schools that would give rise to an anti-Israel view coming out of our schools?" …. Education Minister James Merlino said it was not up to politicians to set the curriculum.  He said the Government was not in the business of banning books.  "Decisions regarding what is included in the curriculum ... those decisions quite rightly are made by the VCAA," Mr Merlino said. "Not the minister, not the Government. It's not the place of politicians to decide what books are to be placed on the reading list, what plays are to be delivered as part of the drama program. And that's how it should be."… But Liberal Party MP David Morris questioned whether the text would be allowed to remain if it attacked a different group, such as the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex community. "This is a one-sided portrayal of what is undoubtedly a complex conflict," he said. "Surely when there's a play selected for study that's one sided, that's divisive, that will undoubtedly make students of Jewish background at the least feel extremely uncomfortable and potentially feel that they're at risk of persecution, surely then as the Minister there is a responsibility on your part to intervene?" Mr Merlino said he trusted teachers would focus on the dramatic elements of the play and explain the political context.’

Tellingly, the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network has described the play as “an important opportunity to glimpse what life is like behind the wire.   Israel’s military attacks on Gaza and the blockade enforced by Israel and Egypt has cost thousands of innocent lives. The play also reports on the internal repression of the Palestinian political factions in the Strip….”

Tellingly, too, a hard core member of the leftist frequently Israel-demonising non-mainstream Australian Jewish Democratic Society (AJDC) has professed on Facebook to raise “a digit finger raised to Dvir Abromwich [sic] of the pro-defamation Anti-Defamation Commission”, while another AJDS stalwart (whose repugnant views regarding BDS can be read here http://www.ajds.org.au/2013/06/jewishpalestiniansolidarity/) declares: "It is vitally important that young people, including those who are Israeli or Jewish, are able to access these stories, and hear them articulated from a Palestinian perspective. Having this play on the VCE syllabus will help to open people's minds, not close them off."

On 11 May, beneath a report of the furore over the play here (http://www.jwire.com.au/not-education-propoganda/), a commenter called James Crafti declared: “I am Jewish and worked on the play. I was one of the first people Samah had review the script when she did a first draft in 2011. I also worked as the assistant stage manager on this remount of the play. It is a fantastic play and people should really see it. People should come and see it with an open mind.

Ah, but Mr Crafti is not your common or garden member of the Aussie Jewish community.  He’s a hard leftist, a relentless critic and campaigner against Israel, about whom further information can be had here (https://redflag.org.au/author/james-crafti ) and here https://electronicintifada.net/content/victory-australias-boycott-campaign-charges-blockading-chocolate-store-dropped/11535), where with regard to a boycott of the Max Brenner franchise  he’s quoted as saying “while we were arrested for daring to stand up for Palestinian human rights, the Israeli state continues to carry out war crimes and human rights abuses against the Palestinian people and are not held to account for their occupation and apartheid practices.”

Here (https://talesofacitybythesea.com/tag/james-crafti/) we learn that “James Crafti is excited to be working on Tales of a City by the Sea as it combines two of his passions: theatre and Palestine. On the former James has directed a variety of plays such as … Seven Jewish Children…. James has also been an organiser with Campaign Against Israeli Apartheid, Australians for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Jews Against Israeli Apartheid”.

Needless to say, choosing (or not) to see the play at the theatre is one thing.  Having it thrust at impressionable young people via their school curriculum, quite another: it is unconscionable.  Unconscionable too that no consultation with Jewish leaders in Victoria seems to have taken place, so that they had no input into the matter until it was a fait accompli. The Jewish communities of the other states should be on their guard and not let this play or anything comparable pass under the radar.

I don’t agree with all this left-leaning Australian Jew quoted below has said on social media, but he is absolutely correct in condemning the play creeping into the purview of school students and the attempted justification of such by elements in the Jewish Left: ‘The Palestinians are already winning the propaganda war against Israel by a mile in Western Leftist circles. We all know their suffering is real, and some of this suffering is no doubt caused by the excesses of the present hard-line, right-wing Israeli government. What is not true is that Israel is the only cause of their suffering. The main cause is the corrupt, duplicitous and divided Palestinian leadership, which uses aid money to enrich themselves and the materials that come into Gaza to build tunnels to attack Israel instead of building housing for their own people. They use their people as human shields and cannon fodder. They teach hate in their schools and Hamas still have a charter which calls for the complete destruction of Israel and the killing of every Jew. And let's not forget the complicity of the Arab countries, which could have re-settled the Palestinians long ago, but they chose to instead use them as pawns to show how evil Israel is.”

And again: ‘A love story it may be … but, according to an article by the education reporter of The Age, ‘Characters in the play describe Israeli rule as "tyrannical". One accuses Israel of leading a "massacre" of the Palestinian people, questioning: "What Holy Scripture gave the command 'Thou shall wipe out their villages and scorch their land?' ….The play was written by an anti-Israel Palestinian activist who supports the BDS movement. I guess you have to be someone who knows the history of the Middle East, and of the centuries of persecution of the Jews both there and in Europe to read between the lines and to appreciate the skewed emphasis here.’

We have lots of ideas, but we need more resources to be even more effective. Please donate today to help get the message out and to help defend Israel.

05/17 Links Pt1: The French peace initiative is doomed to fail; Iran's Soft War Against America

From Ian:

Time to Leave UNESCO - Again
UNESCO's poisonous, fraudulent resolution is not only biased: it is negationist. All traces of Jewish presence in Jerusalem and Judea in ancient times are eliminated at the stroke of a pen.
Only six countries voted to reject the resolution: the United States, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. France, Spain, Sweden, Slovenia accepted the text and voted yes. The resolution was presented with the support of several Muslim countries -- some often described as "moderate": Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.
UNESCO is a branch of the United Nations, and the UN is an organization where democracies are in the minority, surrounded by a huge majority of dictatorships and authoritarian regimes imbued with hatred toward the West. Israel is virtually the only country designated as guilty of violating human rights by the so-called Human Rights Council, and where, in 2009, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was welcomed as a hero.
Ben-Dror Yemini: The French peace initiative is doomed to fail
The French peace initiative was born in sin. It did not begin as an initiative, it began as a threat: If Israel doesn’t accept the diktat to recognize a Palestinian state, without negotiations and without the Palestinians having to recognize Israel, France will support Palestinian demands. The initiative includes demands made of Israel, like halting settlement construction beyond the Green Line—both in the Gilo neighborhood in Jerusalem and in the main settlement blocs that will undoubtedly stay part of Israel in any future accord. But there are no demands made of the Palestinians—not on the "right of return," not on stopping incitement, nothing. This isn't serious.
The Israeli anger—which is entirely justified—led to a certain change in tone. The French are no longer promising the Palestinians that they would recognize a Palestinian state if the talks fail, and they've ambiguously dropped their other preconditions. The Israeli anger increased following the French support of the Arab resolution passed by UNESCO, which in practice rejects any connection between Israel and Jerusalem. When something like this is coming out of Tehran, we can mock it. But not so, when it's coming out of Paris?
The French realize they've made a mistake. They condemned their own vote in favor of the resolution. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault visited Israel on Sunday. Next week, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls—a serious and brave man—will visit Israel as well. They're trying to convince Israel to get on board with their peace initiative.
All peace initiatives so far have failed. Even the dream team of Yossi Beilin, Shlomo Ben-Ami and the late Yossi Sarid couldn't deliver the goods. The Palestinians, again and again, have insisted on the right of return. Not a partial right or return or a symbolic one—a mass one. Not that Netanyahu would've agreed to what Beilin proposed, but Abbas said "no" to Beilin.
Experience proves that it doesn't matter what the Palestinians are offered, it doesn't matter what the initiative entails. It's clear, even before the fact, that Abbas will say no. Even the French, despite Israel's anger at them, won't offer the Palestinians the right of return, and any proposal that does not include the right of return will receive the already-known answer. So, despite the pro-Palestinian bias, the result is known in advance.
Fred Maroun: The French Peace Initiative: From de Gaulle to Haaretz
France's peace initiative is French President François Hollande's equivalent of de Gaulle's betrayal of Israel.
France has already announced that if the peace initiative fails, France will recognize a Palestinian state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rightly concluded that "this ensures that a conference will fail."
France knows that the peace initiative is pointless, but it is using it for theatrical value to embarrass Israel's government and curry favor with Arab regimes.
Those who claim to support peace, but who in fact work to undermine it, are partly responsible for the anti-Semitic campaign against Israel. They should be prominently named and exposed for collaborating with bigots, anti-Semites, and terrorists.

France delays May Israeli-Palestinian parley to allow for US to attend
France on Tuesday agreed to delay the May 30th launch of its new Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative until some time this summer to allow for the US to attend.
It had intended to hold a ministerial meeting at the end of the month with representatives from some 20 countries — not including the Israelis and Palestinians — to lay the groundwork for a larger international peace conference in the fall.
The Palestinians have welcomed the initiative and the Israelis have opposed it. But the US, which has led all past Israeli-Palestinian peace processes has yet to formally state a position on the matter.
It had initially informed France that it could not attend for scheduling reasons.
During a brief visit to Israel on Sunday French Foreign Minister Jean Marc Ayrault said that his government would be happy to reschedule the event to accommodate US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Palestinians want French initiative to set timetable for Israeli West Bank withdrawal
The new French peace initiative should set a timetable for an Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah told reporters during an English-language press conference in Ramallah on Monday afternoon.
“We hope that the peace conference… can set new parameters for peaceful settlement between us and Israel, in which all countries, at least the major countries, can participate,” Hamdallah said.
“And maybe we can set a time limit for the withdrawal of the Israeli troops and a time limit for the establishment of the Palestinian sovereign independent state over the 1967 borders [sic] with east Jerusalem as our capital,” he added.
The event, sponsored by the Foreign Press Association, took place just one day after French Foreign Minister Jean- Marc Ayrault visited Israel and the Palestinian territories to brief Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and PA President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
'Without peace, Mideast extremism will hit Israel,' Abbas warns (not satire)
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the French initiative for an international peace conference aimed at resolving the Middle East conflict.
“Let’s leave everything in the past and let’s meet,” the Palestinian leader said from his headquarters in Ramallah.
Netanyahu has rejected the idea of a peace conference in Paris, insisting that any talks between the two sides should be direct.
“When two sides are invited to a meeting, one cannot present preconditions,” the Palestinian leader said. “It’s the international community that should determine what is right and what isn’t.”
When asked by The Jerusalem Post’s Hebrew-language sister publication Ma’ariv why he refuses the Israeli demand to explicitly recognize Israel as a Jewish state, Abbas refused to comment.
Abbas, who met with a delegation of Israelis from the left-wing social democratic Meretz party, was asked if he lost faith in Netanyahu and his sincerity in negotiating peace.Abbas claimed that if Netanyahu refuses to go along with the French initiative, the Islamic State will gain a foothold in the region. A similar sentiment was echoed by French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault during his trip to the area.
“If there won’t be peace here, the extremists will take over everywhere,” Abbas said. “We are against terrorism and violence and we don’t want them here or in Europe, but if we don’t hurry up [and make peace], all of the extremism in Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Iraq will also arrive in Israel.”
Sisi touts Egypt's peace with Israel amid BDS push in Cairo
Amid growing opposition in Egyptian society to relations with Israel, manifested in a new BDS campaign launched in Cairo this week, Egypt's President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has lauded the peace treaty with Israel, claiming that it "wrote a bright chapter in the region's history."
Delivering a speech at the inauguration of a new power plant in the city of Asyut Tuesday, Sisi said: "When I meet American Congress members and delegations of Jewish communities, I always tell them that the step that was taken more than 40 years ago is the one that brought real peace and wrote a bright chapter of peace between people in our region's history."
"After signing the peace accords, no one thought that true and lasting peace, as it exists today between Israel and Egypt, could be achieved. However, it became a permanent peace due to the changing times and reality," Sisi stated.
The Egyptian president dedicated most of his speech to the efforts to reinvigorate the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Sisi said that "there is an opportunity to write a new chapter of peace in the area," calling on both the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships to take advantage of this opportunity.
"If we can all join forces in order to solve the Palestinian issue by creating hope for Palestinians and assuring security for Israelis, we will be able to write a new chapter that may prove to be more important than the peace accords between Israel and Egypt," Sisi added.
Netanyahu welcomes Egyptian president's call for peace
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu responded to the President of Egypt's call for a peace agreement with the Palestinian Authority earlier Tuesday.
"I welcome Egyptian President El-Sisi's remarks and his willingness to make every effort to advance a future of peace and security between us and the Palestinians and the peoples of the region," Netanyahu said in response.
"Israel is ready to participate with Egypt and other Arab states in advancing both the diplomatic process and stability in the region. I appreciate President El-Sisi's work and also draw encouragement from his leadership on this important issue."
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had issued a call to "join forces" to make regional peace more possible.
EU is shamefully ignoring number one Israeli concern – security
Europe’s media are rightly focused on the despicable recent Islamist stabbing attack in Munich that left one dead and three wounded.
So most Europeans will have undoubtedly missed that in Jerusalem, that same day two 80-year-old women out for a morning stroll were stabbed in the back by Palestinian assailants who fled the scene and went back to east Jerusalem.
Two 80-year-old women. Probably grandmothers. About as much threat to anyone as a feather duster.
Shlomi Tedegi, a medic, described the scene of the attack: “In an area adjacent to the promenade we saw two approximately 80-year-old elderly women lying in the dirt. They were fully conscious and suffering from stab wounds, one in the extremities and her upper body and the second in her upper body.”
Meanwhile in Gaza, the IDF keep uncovering fresh tunnels, and large amounts of the chemicals used to propel rockets.
The day of the attacks, Israel marked Remembrance Day, a day dedicated to the memory of the soldiers who have fallen in defense of the country, from 1948, 1967, 1973, two Lebanon wars and all the attacks and skirmishes in between, as well as to the thousands of Israeli citizens murdered to date by terrorists. It is rare to meet a single Israeli whose family circle or whose friends haven’t been touched in some way by terrorism, or the loss of a loved one on active duty. Remembrance Day in Israel doesn’t hark back to a bygone age, it reflects everyday reality and the price Israel pays for simply existing.
The numbers go up every year.
FT: Only Israel to Blame for 2014 Peace Talks Collapse
In the article, the FT looks back at the 2014 US-led talks, and why they failed:
The last round of US-led talks collapsed in April 2014 after delays in a planned release of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, and Palestinian anger over Israeli construction in illegal settlements and an Israeli demand that they recognize the country as a Jewish state.
Is this really the full story? Was Israel solely to blame for the collapse of the talks, and on three counts? What about the other side of the story that the article didn’t cover? Could it be that the Palestinians played some role in the failure of the talks?
For example:
- Abbas didn’t agree to extend the talks, and with their impending failure, the release of the prisoners was delayed.
- In a clear breach of agreements with the US and Israel, Abbas applied for Palestinian membership in 15 UN and international bodies.
- Fatah announced an agreement with Hamas – the genocidal, terrorist organization – that they were to form a Palestinian unity government.

So why did the Financial Times choose to only report one side – the side that placed the blame wholly on Israel?
Abbas: All of Israel is occupation: "We have been under occupation for 67 or 68 years" since 1948
PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas: "As we are building up man and his health, we are building an economy, agriculture, industry, and laws. All this exists, praise Allah, and is moving ahead naturally. There are many obstacles. I do not deny that countless obstacles and difficulties stand before us, but all of these are no match against our will. We have been under occupation for 67 or 68 years (i.e., since Israel’s establishment in 1948). Others would have sunk into despair and frustration. However, we are determined to reach our goal because our people stands behind us." [Official PA TV, March 11, 2016]

Bangladesh opposition official arrested over Israel meeting
Bangladesh police have arrested a senior official from the main opposition party and accused him of plotting against the state following his meeting with an Israeli political adviser, an official said Monday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government is stepping up a crackdown on political opponents in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, which is also reeling from a wave of killings blamed on Islamists.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) joint secretary general Aslam Chowdhury was arrested on Sunday after local media reported that he had met an Israeli government adviser in India in March.
“We’ve arrested Chowdhury for allegedly plotting conspiracies against the government by personally meeting an Israeli politician abroad,” detective police commissioner Abdul Baten told reporters.
Dhaka police spokesman Maruf Hossain Sorder said officers were preparing to file a criminal case against him.
Outrage after 1980 Paris synagogue bombing suspect walks free
The October 3, 1980, bombing of a synagogue on rue Copernic in Paris killed four people and marked the first fatal attack against the French Jewish community since the Nazi occupation in World War II.
But the prime suspect for the bombing walked free Tuesday, wearing just an electronic bracelet.
"The arrest of Hassan Diab and his extradition to France in 2014 was a symbol of the determination of justice in the fight against terrorism," Roger Cukierman, president of the French Jewish umbrella group CRIF, stated Tuesday.
"This release is outrageous and irresponsible. It is an insult to the victims and their families."
"It will be interpreted as an indulgence on terrorism that has hit France hard," he added.
The attack on the synagogue happened on a Friday evening, the eve of the Jewish Sabbath when it was packed with some 300 worshippers.
OneFamily visits Beduin victim of TA terrorist attack
A Jewish-run NGO that visits wounded and the families of terrorism victims made a family stop on Monday at the home of taxi driver Amin Shaaban, who was murdered by Nashat Milhelm in a shooting rampage in Tel Aviv in January.
“We divide the country into regions and everyone who is wounded or killed in a terrorist attack gets a visit,” Marc Belzberg, the founder and chairman of the board of the OneFamily NGO, told The Jerusalem Post.
The NGO visits include soldiers and non-Jewish victims.
OneFamily visited Shaaban’s Beduin family in Lod, including the homes of his three wives and 15 children.
“One of the regional directors met them immediately after it happened,” noted Belzberg.
Each kid under 16 received a new bike and the older children each received NIS 2,000 checks. Each of the three wives and Shaaban’s mother got NIS 3,000.
Israeli Arab Balad Party posts video of father of murderer of 3 civilians on Facebook
Father of terrorist murderer Baha Alyan: "We met today with MPs of the Balad Party: Hanin Zoabi, Jamal Zahalka, and Basel Ghattas. The meeting was warm and productive. The Palestinian brothers, the MPs, listened to the pain and suffering of the relatives of the Martyrs whose bodies are being held [by Israel]. Their hearts were open, they listened to every word the Martyrs’ relatives said. They emphasized that they will make every effort to return the bodies by applying pressure on the [Israeli] government in parliament and by contacting the relevant political and security bodies of the Israeli government. It was agreed to continue meeting and to follow the matter in the near future." [Balad Party Facebook page, Feb. 2, 2016]
On Oct. 13, 2015, two Palestinian terrorists, Baha Alyan (22) and Bilal Ghanem (23) boarded bus in Jerusalem's Armon Hanatziv neighborhood with a gun and a knife and attacked passengers, killing Israelis Haviv Haim (78), Alon Govberg (51), Richard Lakin (76) and wounding 3 Israelis. Alyan was shot and killed by an Israeli security guard at the scene and Ghanem, a Hamas terrorist who served time in Israeli prison in 2013-2014, was wounded.

French journalist: Hezbollah asked us to avoid saying Israel killed its military chief
Hezbollah asked western journalists not to report that Israel was behind the assassination of Mustafa Badreddine, Hezbollah's military chief, a prominent French journalist has alleged.
Georges Malbrunot, the Middle East reporter for the French daily newspaper Le Figaro, wrote a series of comments on his Twitter page on Saturday, regarding the assassination of Hezbollah's top commander.
"Hezbollah asked the journalists who asked for its reaction to Baddredine's liquidation to avoid saying that Israel is involved in the attack," Malbrunot wrote.
"On Friday, I spoke with a diplomat in the Levant who told me that the anti-Assad Syrian armed groups do not have the ability to produce such a sophisticated operation even if Israel could resort to use the services of one of these groups," the French reporter added.
According to Malbrunot, the foreign diplomat told him that "It could be little doubt that the assassination of Badreddine is the continuation of the Israeli liquidations of Hezbollah's senior leaders."
A statement released by Hezbollah on Friday emphasized that Badreddine was assassinated on Thursday night near Damascus airport by an artillery shell fired by a Syrian rebel group.

Palestinian Museum Prepares to Open, Minus Exhibitions
When the $24 million Palestinian Museum celebrates its opening on Wednesday, it will have almost everything: a stunning, contemporary new building; soaring ambitions as a space to celebrate and redefine Palestinian art, history and culture; an outdoor amphitheater; a terraced garden.
One thing the museum will not have is exhibitions.
The long-planned — and much-promoted — inaugural show, “Never Part,” highlighting artifacts of Palestinian refugees, has been suspended after a disagreement between the museum’s board and its director, which led to the director’s ouster. President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority and other dignitaries are expected to attend the opening ceremony, but a spokeswoman acknowledged on Sunday that “there will not be any artwork exhibited in the museum at all.”
Omar al-Qattan, the museum’s chairman, said Palestinians were “so in need of positive energy” that it was worthwhile to open even an empty building. “Symbolically it’s critical,” he said, conceding that the next phase, including the exhibitions, “is the more exciting one.”
Gazans say Jordan is refusing to allow them passage
Gazans who endured a border blockade by neighboring Egypt and Israel for almost a decade thought they were finally catching a break when Israel slightly eased restrictions on travel from the Hamas-ruled territory in recent months.
But now Jordan appears to be emerging as an obstacle, routinely denying transit permits for Gazans and effectively preventing patients, university students and others with business abroad from leaving the territory.
With the Egyptian-controlled Rafah border crossing — Gaza’s main gateway to the outside world — all but shuttered, Jordan has emerged as a key player in enabling Gazans to travel abroad. Over the past year or so, Israel has begun to allow growing numbers of Gazans to cross through its territory and the West Bank into Jordan, where they can catch flights to their final destinations.
But Gazans can only cross through Israel if they have a special visa from Jordan known as a “no objection” letter. And travelers and human rights groups say that Gazans are experiencing difficulties receiving these permits like never before.
The US-based Human Rights Watch has urged Jordan to facilitate travel for Palestinians from Gaza to third countries.
Senior Hamas official accuses Fatah of plotting to kill Egypt's Sisi
A Gazan terror cell forged by Tawfik Tirawi, a senior Fatah official and the former head of the Palestinian Authority General Intelligence Services, was plotting to assassinate Egypt's President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, a senior Hamas official has claimed.
In a press statement on Monday, Hamas representative Salah al-Bardawil said that the recently-arrested members of the alleged Fatah terror cell provided Hamas with information and documents that indicate that they had planned to assassinate Sisi and other senior Egyptian officials.
According to Bardawil, the terrorist cell conspired to put the blame for Sisi's assassination on Hamas, thereby wreaking havoc on Hamas's relations with Egypt, which have recently grown warmer.
"We will convey these documents to Egypt and to other regional parties to show them the grave conspiracy created by Tirawi," Bardawil stated, adding that Hamas will not allow anyone to damage Egypt's national security.
A user named Gareeb Gaza, who presents himself as a fighter in Hamas's military wing, al-Kassam Brigades, wrote a series of remarks about the ongoing affair on his Twitter account.
Report: Mughniyeh's son appointed Hezbollah military commander
Hezbollah appointed Mustafa Mughniyeh military commander following the death of his uncle Mustafa Badreddine last weekend in a shelling at Damascus airport, the London based Asharq al-Awsat reported Tuesday morning.
Mustafa Mughniyeh is the son of Imad Mughniyeh, Hezbollah's military commander who was assassinated in Syria in 2008 in an operation attributed in foreign media to the Mossad.
The report, based on Lebanese sources, says the 1983-born recent appointee was named after his uncle when Badreddine was serving jail time in Kuwait for involvement in bomb attacks.
Mughniyeh has long remained under-the-radar and has steered clear of media attention; His photos are nearly impossible to come across. Some believe his identity remained concealed in order to secure his cover in covert Hezbollah operations overseas.
According to the report, Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani traveled to Beirut following Badreddine's death to oversee the promotion of Mughniyeh.
Al Qaeda Calls For Killings Of US Businessmen
An online al Qaeda magazine is calling for jihadis to damage the US economy by killing business leaders and entrepreneurs, according to analysts.
An article in Inspire, which was published on Saturday, calls for "Professional Assassinations" and features the image of a hooded man watching a home from the outside.
It also includes a photo montage showing Microsoft founder Bill Gates, a gun and a blood spatter, the Washington Times reported.
The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), which obtained a copy of the magazine, said it provides detailed information on preparing for and carrying out targeted assassinations.
It quotes Inspire editor Yahya Ibrahim as saying : "The prophet ordered the killing of many criminal leaders using this method... and here we are, following the footsteps of the prophet on how he dealt with his enemies and friends".
He adds: "We will never put down our weapons until we fulfil what Allah wants from us.
Al-Qaeda in New 'Inspire' Issue: Clock Boy 'Even Inspired Us in a Way'
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's new issue of Inspire magazine includes a shout out to the "Clock Boy" while slamming President Obama's programs to counter violent extremism.
Ahmed Mohamed, 14, was arrested at his Texas high school in 2015 for bringing a homemade clock to school encased in what resembled a small briefcase. The device was seized by his English teacher and the cops were called. He was not charged with any crime.
"Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great," Obama tweeted in support of boy. A month later, Ahmed met Obama during White House Astronomy Night event on the South Lawn of the White House.
The new al-Qaeda issue featured a picture of the two meeting as well as the clock bomb, with the notation: "Obama, 'because of his sensitivity towards Muslim discrimination,' sees an opp to further his PR by acknowledging a brilliant 14 yr old Muslim boy (who in fact even inspired us in a way)."
The Inspire issue features step-by-step photos of how to build a parcel bomb, a magnetic car bomb, and a door-trap bomb.
Iran's Soft War Against America
Iran is waging a "soft war" offensive -- media, social media, charm -- against the United States. Tehran believes it is scoring significant victories in this war, and it clearly has, as can be seen by the so-called "Iran deal" -- technically no "deal" at all: one side, Iran, got everything.
Iran's sophisticated employment of asymmetrical tactics, such as "soft war" -- which relies on the other side's wishes, conscious or not, to be taken in -- is apparently part of Tehran's strategy to level the playing field against the U.S., despite America's overwhelming military superiority.
Tehran seems to think, with justification, that it has successfully exploited the Obama administration's uncorseted desire for better bilateral relations into granting Iran concessions that are not part of the original Joint Comprehensive Program of Action (JCPOA).
One of these concessions is granting Iran access to the U.S financial system; U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spent last week trawling through Europe, imploring bankers to do business with Iran, despite that minor detail that America will not.
Another concession is the U.S. offer to buy Iran's heavy water, a product of its planned plutonium bomb-making reactor in Arak.
Still another concession is the U.S. administration's failure to increase sanctions on Iran for repeatedly launching potentially nuclear-capable ballistic missiles -- in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
Tehran Nuclear Chief: Iran “Enhancing” Its Nuclear Program, Uranium Enrichment Process
Iran has been “enhancing” its nuclear program and bolstering its uranium enrichment capability, Iran’s atomic energy chief told a group of the country’s ambassadors and envoys in Tehran on Saturday.
“We are enhancing the industrial section of Iran’s nuclear activities technologically with modern systems and machines,” said Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, according to Fars news agency. He further asserted that the quality of the country’s process of uranium enrichment was improving, Tehran Times reported.
Salehi added that Iran’s nuclear program was on the “right path” and was “compatible with the strategic plans of the country,” according to the IRNA state news agency. He also said that Iran is beginning to sell its heavy water on the open market.
Salehi’s remarks recall a concern raised last year by Mark Dubowitz and Reuel Marc Gerecht of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who warned that details leaked about the nuclear deal suggested that “eventually the regime could legally develop an industrial-size enrichment program, reducing its bomb breakout time to days and increasing the risk of uranium diversion to covert sites.” Similarly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned in his speech before Congress last year that the deal “creates an even greater danger that Iran could get to the bomb by keeping the deal.”
President Barack Obama acknowledged last April that given the nuclear advances that Iran could achieve over the course of the deal, Iran’s nuclear “breakout times would have shrunk almost down to zero” by the time that the accord expires.
MEMRI: IRGC Aerospace And Missile Force Commander: The Americans Are Telling Us 'Don't Talk About Missile Affairs, And If You Conduct A Test... Don't Mention It'
Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Aerospace and Missile Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said at a conference of religious students in Qom on May 14, 2016:
"The arrogance [i.e. the U.S.] is trying to create [among us] the belief that Iran is at a crossroads, and that it has no choice but to compromise with America or be eternally subjected to American pressure and the problems that stem from that... At the same time, within Iran the belief has taken root that it is not possible to solve [Iran's] problems without America...
"If we stand fast against this move by the Americans, who have stolen the funds of the [Iranian] nation, they will abandon this habit [of thievery].But if we compromise with them, the[ir] thievery will end up [taking] $40-$50 billion of Iran's assets and its blocked funds. The Americans understand only the language of force; they do not understand the language of reason. They cannot be trusted. We must face them down firmly, and we must act. If we do not, we will witness daily their exaggerated and evil demands.
Elliott Abrams: John Kerry Impersonates the Iranian Chamber of Commerce
The termination of sanctions pursuant to its nuclear deal with the West has not done enough to boost Iran’s economy—or so Tehran has complained. In response, John Kerry traveled to Europe last week to persuade investors to do business with the Islamic Republic. Elliott Abrams comments:
Iran has the “right” to an end to nuclear sanctions, but has no “right” to additional business. There are many reasons companies might hold back, ranging from American terrorism-related and human-rights sanctions, to uncertainty about future U.S. policy, to fear that entities in Iran with which they may undertake business are also involved in illegal or terrorist activities.
Moreover, Iran is not a democracy with a reliable legal system, but a dictatorship run by the ayatollahs and the Revolutionary Guard where legal rights cannot possibly be guaranteed. There is simply no defensible reason for an American official, much less our top diplomat, to concern himself with how much investment and profit Iran can eke out of the nuclear deal. The effort to do so betrays America’s real interests in the Middle East, which are challenged by a richer and better-resourced Iran.
Texas Governor Refuses Obama’s Request to Lift State Sanctions on Iran; Says Nuclear Deal Undermines US Security, Poses Existential Threat to Israel
The governor of Texas sent a harsh letter to US President Barack Obama on Monday, announcing that his state would not only maintain its sanctions on Iran, but strengthen them, The Algemeiner has learned.
Governor Greg Abbott explained that the letter was in response to a written appeal made by Obama on April 8, requesting that Texas “review” its economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic – as was promised to Tehran in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers reached in July.
“I strongly oppose the Iran deal because it undermines the national security of the United States and its strategic allies abroad – especially our most important Middle East ally, Israel,” Abbott wrote to Obama. “Entering into an agreement with a country that consistently calls for ‘death to America,’ and repeatedly articulates antisemitic policies is short-sighted and ignores geopolitical realities.”
Asserting that the nuclear deal poses an existential threat to the Jewish state, Abbott stressed Texas’ steadfast support for Israel – where he had just returned from a trip sponsored by casino magnate Sheldon and Dr. Miriam Adelson. He then described why he sees a parallel between Israel and his own life story.
Iran MPs want US to pay damages for ‘hostile action’
Iran’s parliament on Tuesday voted through a law obliging the government to demand damages from the United States for 63 years of “hostile action and crimes,” state television reported.
“The government has the duty to take the necessary measures seeking compensation for material and moral damages caused by the United States” to the country and Iranians over the past 63 years, the text reads.
It cites “material or moral damage” caused by the US during the coup against nationalist leader Mohammad Mossadegh (1953), in the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), in the destruction of oil platforms in the Gulf and in espionage against the Islamic republic.
The parliament did not specify a sum, but Vice President Majid Ansari said during the debate that “Iranian courts have already ruled that the US pay $50 billion in damages for its hostile actions” towards the country.
The law was passed by the conservative-dominated outgoing parliament in response to a US Supreme Court decision last month.
Senators Demand Obama Fire Top Aide for Iran Deal Deception

The lawmakers are pressing Obama to fire deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes following revelations he and other officials “spearheaded the charge to mislead elected lawmakers and the American people about the Iran nuclear deal and the negotiations that led to this agreement,” according to the letter.
Rhodes will skip a Tuesday hearing before the House Oversight Committee as it investigates claims he and other senior White House officials waged a misinformation campaign to garner approval for the contested Iran deal, according to sources who spoke to the Free Beacon.
The White House kept congressional sources in the dark until late Monday afternoon, when officials finally disclosed that Rhodes would not testify as the result of “constitutional concerns,” according to conversations with congressional insiders and a letter sent by the White House.
Rhodes’ reported spin campaign has become a flashpoint following a lengthy New York Times magazine profile detailing his attempts to mislead reporters and D.C. insiders about the contents of the nuclear deal.
White House: Obama aide won’t testify on Iran deal
The White House said Monday that a senior adviser to President Barack Obama won’t testify before a House committee about how he promoted the Iran nuclear deal to the public.
White House counsel Neil Eggleston said in a letter to the House Oversight Committee that allowing deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes to testify would threaten the president’s “ability to receive candid advice.”
Rhodes stirred up controversy last week when he told The New York Times Magazine that he intentionally created an “echo chamber” of supporters to build public support for the nuclear agreement.
Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, said Rhodes should have to explain and clarify his remarks.
White House Angrily Calls Republicans Liars About Iran Deal
White House press secretary Josh Earnest lashed out at Republican lawmakers Monday for inviting Obama aide Ben Rhodes to testify in a congressional hearing this week on the Iran nuclear deal, calling opponents of the nuclear accord in Congress liars who are deceiving the public about its content.
Fox News correspondent Kevin Corke asked Earnest at the White House daily press briefing if it would be “instructive if not enlightening” for Rhodes, the president’s deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, to appear before Congress to discuss the Iran deal.
“Ben Rhodes is the person who told the truth about the Iran deal, and it’s Republicans who are either badly misinformed or outright lying about the Iran deal,” Earnest said in response.
Iranian models arrested and forced to give public self-criticism for posting pictures without headscarves
A leading Iranian model has been forced to give a public self-criticism after being charged with “promoting western promiscuity” for posting pictures of herself online without a headscarf.
Elham Arab, famous for her blonde hair, doll-like looks and wedding dress model shoots, is one of a string of Iranian models caught up in a sting operation code-named “Spider 2”. It is aimed at models and other figures in the fashion industry who have advertised themselves or appeared on Instagram and other social media sites.
Before a hearing at the Iranian Revolutionary Court in a case brought by the special cyber-crimes unit, Ms Arab was questioned on camera by the prosecutor, Abbas Doulatabadi.
Wearing black chador over her newly dark locks, she said she regretted entering the fashion business in the first place, describing it as a “mistake”. “I think all humans are interested in admiring beauty and becoming famous,” she said.
“But they must first consider at what cost and what they will lose in return. For an Iranian film star they may not lose much but for a model she will certainly lose her hijab and honour.”
In Islam, hijab can refer both to the headscarf women wear to cover their hair and the principle of modesty that underlies the practice.
The crackdown on the fashion industry is part of a broader renewed emphasis on “Islamic values” under President Hassan Rouhani. Although he has a reputation as a moderate compared to his hardline predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the regime has been trying to reassert its revolutionary credentials since the nuclear deal with the West.
MEMRI: Iranian TV Report on International Holocaust Cartoon Contest Held in Tehran
On May 15, Al-Alam TV broadcast a report on the opening of the third International Holocaust Cartoon Contest in Tehran. The exhibition features caricatures of Israeli PM Netanyahu, comparing him to Hitler and to ISIS terrorists. The organizer, Shojai Tabtabai, said that the exhibition was "a response to the publication of cartoons by the French Charlie Hebdo magazine, which affronted the Prophet Muhammad, as well as an expression of [our opposition] to the massacres perpetrated against the Palestinian people."

Tunisia beefing up security ahead of Jewish pilgrimage to Djerba

From Tunisie Numerique:
Security reinforcements arrived Monday in Djerba, in anticipation of the annual [Jewish Lag B'Omer] pilgrimage to the Djerba which runs from May 25 to 26.

Extensive security arrangements have been made to the main point of access to the island and on different roads leading to the tourist area and the Jewish quarter and synagogue. The same protections were extended to the city of Zarsis.

Furthermore, and for two weeks, several security campaigns were conducted resulting in several arrests and dismantling of cells suspected of terrorist activities.

It was decided this year to strengthen the security apparatus ensuring the smooth running of the annual pilgrimage to Djerba amid security tensions related to recent attacks.

About 2000 Jews, including 150 from Israel, are expected to attend.

Israel issued a travel warning about the pilgrimage last week:

Israelis should stay away from the annual Lag B’Omer pilgrimage to the Tunisian island of Djerba because of concrete terrorist threats, the PMO’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau warned on Monday.

In advance of the Lag B’Omer celebration on May 25-26, the bureau issued a travel advisory saying that terrorist elements, specifically global Jihadists, “continue to operate in Tunisia and carry out attacks.”

The concrete threat level against Jewish sites is high, the bureau said, reiterating its standing advisory to “refrain from visiting” the area.

A similar warning was issued last year.

The synagogue was the site of an attack in 1985, when three people were killed.

In 2002, al Qaida claimed responsibility for a truck full of explosives that exploded near the synagogue, killing 21 people.

A Palestinian refugee - from Hamastan

From Al Arabiya:

Mounis Hammouda and Hisham Shaban were stranded in Honduras, penniless after being ripped off by a smuggler who was supposed to get them to Mexico so that they could arrive at their final destination, the United States.

The Palestinian men had traveled across the world to escape bloodshed and torture in their homeland, and desperately phoned a friend in Canada to wire them money so they could finish their trek.

When they showed up at the U.S.-Mexico border in November 2014, Hammouda remembers seeing the American flag, and feeling relieved.

“I know that America is a country of freedom. It’s a country of opportunity. It’s a country of democracy. Everybody knows that America is a country that helps the world,” he said.

They presented themselves at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona, claiming asylum. The FBI cleared the men and said they didn’t pose a threat, and they were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

After spending over a year in a detention center, Hammouda posted bail with the help of a fundraiser and Shaban remains.

“Thank God things are good. I finished with the detention and I have freedom,” Hammouda said.
From which homeland were they escaping bloodshed and torture?
Hammouda, 30, said he fled Gaza in 2011 after members of Hamas, the Islamic political party, tortured his father because he worked for Fatah, a rival organization. He said his family was targeted.

He said he had to drop out of college and quit his pursuit of a law degree. He was blacklisted and couldn’t find work.

Relatives helped him find money and a visa to leave Gaza in 2011.
The US accepted him as a refugee because of the danger of his returning to his home - Hamas-controlled Gaza. He is a true refugee.

His friend did not flee because of fear of Hamas persecution, and the US is trying to deport him as a result:
Shaban, 32 also grew up in Gaza. He said his family lived next door to a Hamas operative who was the target of a bombing that left Shaban’s family home destroyed. None of his relatives was injured, but he said he felt unsafe.

After two years of studying social work, Shaban saved up money and left in 2010. He lived in a government-funded apartment before losing funding and moving to the camp in Kofinou, in the Greek-controlled part of Cyprus, he said.

He met Hammouda there, where the men bonded over being unable to work as the economy tanked and their government aid shrunk. There was no work for the men and nothing for them to do, they said.
While Hammouda has been released, Shaban has been denied asylum and has been ordered removed from the country, but the government hasn’t found a place to send him because Palestine is not an officially recognized state.

ICE spokeswoman Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe said the agency is still working with Saudi Arabia, where Shaban was born, to obtain travel documents. But Shaban said that the country won’t accept him because he is not a citizen.
Shaban  was born in Saudi Arabia, but Arab nations do not allow Palestinians born on their territory to become citizens.

You can learn a lot from reading these stories carefully. The official UN definition of a refugee is someone who "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country." This definition is what the US used when choosing to extend refugee status to Hammouda and not to Shaban.

And it is a definition that doesn't apply to millions of fake Palestinian "refugees" who are stateless because of policies like Saudi Arabia's - policies of clear discrimination against them.

The real Palestinian refugee in this story, the refugee from Hamastan, shows the stark difference between the million of real refugees worldwide and the millions of fake Palestinian "refugees."
