06/24 Links Pt1: How Dare Europe Applaud a Blood-Libeler?; 'Palestinians were created to cause trouble for Jews'

From Ian:

Caroline Glick: Obama’s money and Israel’s sovereignty
This week, MK Michael Oren stood up to his boss in the Kulanu party, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, to the political Left, including hundreds of retired security brass, and to the IDF General Staff. The former ambassador to Washington urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to sign the multi-year security assistance deal that US President Barack Obama demands Israel accept.
The problem isn’t the money. By all accounts, Obama’s multi-year military assistance package is generous.
The problem is that in exchange for the expanded military aid, Obama is demanding that Israel surrender its diplomatic and military independence to the White House.
For more than 40 years, every US administration – including the Obama administration – that has sought to harm Israel in any way has hit up against an unmovable obstacle. Whether the White House wanted to enable the UN Security Council to pass an anti-Israel resolution, place an embargo on military exports or bureaucratically slow them down to force Israel to stand down during wartime; whether the White House wanted block expanded trade deals, crowd out Israel’s military industries, or sell game changing weapons systems to Israel’s enemies, the US Congress has always stopped it in its tracks.
Israel-haters in the US speak endlessly about the supposedly all powerful and malign “Israel lobby,” which controls US foreign affairs. But the simple truth is that it wouldn’t matter all that much if AIPAC were to shut down tomorrow. Even without AIPAC, Israel would enjoy the support of Congress.
French anti-racism groups spar over mayor’s support for Palestinian killer
Two French organizations devoted to fighting anti-Semitism clashed publicly over one group’s complaint to police on incitement against a mayor who launched a campaign in support of a Palestinian convicted of murder.
France’s Human Rights League, a nonprofit founded in 1898 to protest the racially motivated conviction for espionage of the French Jewish army captain Alfred Dreyfus, criticized the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism, or BNVCA, in a statement last week.
The league’s statement said BNVCA behaved like “a spokesperson of the Israeli government” when it filed the complaint against the Communist mayor of the Paris suburb of Stains, Azzédine Taïbi, for his refusal to remove from city hall a banner calling for the release of Marwan Barghouti, who is serving multiple life sentences in Israel for acts of terrorism in which dozens of civilians were murdered.
“Stains is taking action for peace, free Marwan Barghouti, the Palestinian Mandela,” the banner read.
A French judge in March instructed Taïbi to remove the banner or face sanctions, citing previous precedents including the Administrative Court of Montreuil’s injunction in July, which nullified the honorary resident status conferred on Barghouti by another Paris suburb, Aubervilliers. The court said such actions exceed the duties and responsibilities of municipal governments.
But Taïbi refused to comply, prompting BNVCA to file criminal charges against him. According to BNVCA, celebrating Palestinians who murdered Jews risks legitimizing acts of violence against Jews in France, where Islamists have killed eight Jews in two shooting attacks since 2012. The perpetrators of both attacks said they were acting to avenge Palestinians. BNVCA vowed to continue legal efforts to counter the celebration of terrorists in France.
'Palestinians were created to cause trouble for Jews'
A man calling himself Wild Bill described his support for Israel in a video that is going viral.
"We all know that Islam is giving the world a lot of things that will be long remembered. They invented the fine art of skyjacking, suicide bombers and taqiya - the art of lying to infidels," he began.
"They are the only religion to develop a preschool program where the children sing about exterminating Jews and I do believe they are the only ones to demolish two skyscrapers while 3,000 people were still inside. Yes, Islam has a long and proud history of doing things that nobody else does.
"But by far the most creative invention of Islam is the Palestinian: a person who has never been seen before in the modern world who supposedly lived in a nation that never existed. The Palestinian was invented shortly after the nation of Israel sprang into existence as the new name for the traditional home of the Jewish people.
"Now, prior to the invention of the Palestinian, the Arab nations had been lusting for the land of the Jews because the hardworking Jewish people had transformed the desert land into a well-irrigated and beautiful oasis and the Arabs decided they wanted it.

Ben Dror Yemini: A current of lies
Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) exposed this concentric circle of lies; the first circle consists of the lies being spewed by Yehuda Shaul regarding the "poisoning of the wells" in one village.
The second circle was an official Palestinian Foreign Ministry communiqué regarding the "poisoning of wells throughout the West Bank," together with Rabbi Melamed and his council, and claiming that the story was covered on Israeli channel 10.The message included a warning over the expected deaths of thousands of Palestinians, and a condemnation of the silence in the international community on the issue.
The third circle was an official communiqué coming from the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which combined what Shaul was saying and the alleged rabbis of the alleged rabbinical council which allegedly support poisoning Palestinian wells.
If we actually examine the water infrastructure in the West Bank, we see that there has been an infrastructure revolution since 1967.
When Israel first took the West Bank, only four out of 700 towns had running water. By 2004, that number had grown to 643 out of a total of 708 towns with running water in the entirety of the West Bank. And while the water needs of the Jewish areas are greater than those of the Palestinian villages, Israel doesn't need to use water resources such as aquifers as much, while the Palestinians do. The civil administration has caused an incredible revolution for the benefit of the residents there.
There's no need to ask the representatives from Breaking the Silence to tell the whole story—that goes against their agenda. But there's no reason to create a falsehood. There's no reason to take one Jew who cheats and robs, and then turn all Jews into cheaters and robbers.
These methods are distasteful when racists do it against Muslims, and they're distasteful when they're used by anti-Semites against Jews. They are also distasteful when used methodologically by Breaking the Silence activists against the State of Israel. We must strive for a civilized Israel, but there's no need to turn Israel into a monster.
Egyptian Statesman: What Palestinian Refugees?
The Middle East is very richly endowed with unofficial meetings of experts, diplomats and generals from Arab states, Israel and the West. At one of those meetings, a well-known Egyptian statesman sat down to talk with an Israeli acquaintance. The conversation touched on the Palestinian refugees, and this person, who held top positions in the past and still has great influence on the generals in Cairo, lost his cool.
“What refugees are you talking about?” the Egyptian scolded his Israeli interlocutor. The region is flooded with millions of new refugees living under impossible conditions and desperately needing help. These people fled the terrors of war in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, rotting in the desert in the summer and freezing in the winter.
He went on. The tents they get from neighboring states and international relief agencies are insufficient. Giant tent cities have sprouted up everywhere in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. These refugees are the expression of the upheaval in the region.
There was more. Against this backdrop, the Palestinians’ insistence on portraying third-generation refugees, the grandchildren of those who fled or were expelled during the 1948 war, is groundless. Many of these refugees live in stone dwellings with proper infrastructure, continuing to benefit from handouts from the UN Relief and Works Agency. Their leaders use them to perpetuate the Palestinian problem.
Such candid words are very rarely uttered by Arab statesmen. Despite the gloomy tone heard frequently from Israeli analysts – most recently at the Herzliya Conference last week – Israel is one of the only beneficiaries of the great upheaval in the Middle East.
The Mottle Wolfe Show: Brexit – Good for the Jews?
Brian of London from the blog Israellycool joins Mottle to discuss today’s Brexit referendum. Also denial ain’t just a river in the Islamic Republic of Egypt. People are still trying to blame anything other than Islamic terror for the Orlando attack. Plus, Israel offends the EU by suggesting that they are ‘colonialists’.
Are the Palestinians Thinking the Unthinkable?
The basic fact—which many well-meaning people keep missing because it is so unpalatable—is that Palestinians’ giving up the “right of return” is the key to any hope of a deal. The Israeli public won’t accept big concessions for anything short of a formal end to claims. That remains a huge obstacle on the Palestinian side, in part because it is a bargaining chip they don’t want to give up until they are sure they have the “best offer” on the table, but also because many feel the conventional two-state solution approach doesn’t meet their needs. Palestinians in Gaza refugee camps wouldn’t get much from a settlement that leaves them in camps and renounces their “right of return” to the places their ancestors lived in 1947.
Many Palestinians also refuse to make a deal on religious grounds: Muslim lands cannot be ceded to infidels without breaking God’s law. Meanwhile, there are pragmatic worries: Many Palestinians who might be fine with the deal themselves don’t want to get assassinated by people who disagree. The Palestinian leadership is, for all of these reasons, under pressure not to make a deal and especially not to cave on the “right of return.”
There are a lot of “nevers” out there—the Palestinians will never this or that, the Likudniks will never such and so. But many of the supposed red lines are more flexible than people assume. There were old “nevers,” too: Egypt would never, Jordan would never, Arafat wouldn’t ever…. Often enough, these “nevers” become self-defeating and immobilizing false-truths. Circumstances change and the parameters of what people will do change with them. But the key remains the same, and it’s sort of depressing: Both sides will only take risks for peace if the status quo becomes more painful than the changed circumstances they anticipate, and they can only turn a set of piers into a bridge with the help of a third party. That third party used to be and probably remains the United States.
Nothing in this part of the world is going to clear up in a hurry, but the lack of the usual strident reaction to any suggestion that Palestinian negotiators should “never” put off-the-table questions on the table is, as far as it goes, an encouraging sign.
Mordechai Kedar: New trends on the Palestinian street
Another US-European dynamic was set in motion recently in an attempt to reawaken the Israel-Palestine issue by means of an international conference, whose mandate is to restart the peace process and establish two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side on the west of the Jordan.
The French are at the forefront of this effort and that fact gives rise to several questions, for example: Why the French - and why now? How will the Israelis and Palestinians view the idea? The answer to the first question is obvious. A good many French politicians fear the Islamic terror that has hit France hard over the past three years: Toulouse, Paris, Hypercacher, Charlie Hebdo, the Batkalan pub, Stade de France Stadium and three restaurants. The French government hopes that Jihadists will see France in a different light if they help establish a Palestinian State - and leave the country alone.
Another factor motivating the French members of parliament and other nations to support establishing a Palestinian Arab state is the growing number of Muslim voters in Europe and the politicians' feeling that the road to their ever-islamicizing electoral districts must be paved with the fulfillment of voter expectations – to wit, the advancement of the Palestinian Arab state.
This is of a matter of grave significance. The Europeans insist Israel must accept a Palestinian Arab state in Judea and Samaria, one likely to become another Hamas stronghold in addition to Gaza, solely due to electoral considerations - and possibly in order to enhance European security by helping to calm the Jihadists who roam freely throughout the continent.
Elliott Abrams: Obama’s Hypocrisy Highlighted in Push to Undermine Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge (INTERVIEW)
Despite claims by Barack Obama that his support for Israel has been greater than that of all presidents throughout American history, a possible White House decision that would undermine Israel’s qualitative military edge (QME) — highlights his hypocrisy, a prominent foreign policy expert told The Algemeiner on Thursday.
Elliott Abrams — senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, and former national security adviser to President George W. Bush — was reacting to reports that Obama is seeking to stop subsidizing Israel’s defense sector.
More specifically, according to a column by Eli Lake in Bloomberg View on Wednesday, the president wants to remove the “offshore procurement” provision that has been unique to Israel’s aid package. Israel, Lake wrote, “is not only the greatest beneficiary of US defense assistance, but also the only one allowed to spend a portion of that assistance on weapons and equipment from its own industry. Everyone else has to buy American.” Israeli and American officials say, according to Lake, that “Obama would like to phase out the agreement that allows Israel to spend 26 percent of US annual aid at home” — something that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been objecting to as a renewal of the package is being discussed.
“In one respect this is surprising,” Lake said. “Obama and his supporters like to tout US military aid to Israel as an act of the president’s unprecedented generosity. The US has given Israel nearly $24 billion under Obama, more than any other US president. At the same time, Obama’s insistence on ending the US subsidy for Israeli defense items reflects a growing unease among many US defense companies that America’s cold war client state is now a competitor in the international arms market.”
EU Hopes for Israel-Palestinian Talks Fall Flat
It would have been the highest-level meeting between Israeli and Palestinian officials since U.S.-led peace talks collapsed but, in the end, European officials were unable to orchestrate a meeting between Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
European Union officials had said as late as Wednesday evening they were still hoping to bring the two men –who were both visiting Brussels this week – together, as EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini continued her push to defuse tensions and start talking again.
But, on Thursday, Mr. Rivlin said his Palestinian counterpart would not agree to talks in person.
“I find it strange that President Mahmoud Abbas… refused again and again to meet with Israeli leaders,” he said. “We can talk directly and find a way to build confidence… We will not be able to build trust between us if we don’t begin to speak directly.”
European officials acknowledged that Mr. Rivlin had offered to sit down with his Palestinian counterpart but that Mr. Abbas had refused. “I suggest you talk to the Palestinians about their reasons,” said one official.
The Palestinian mission to the EU did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Elliott Abrams: Abbas Spurns Rivlin’s Hand–and Peace
Abbas and Rivlin both spoke to the European Parliament, where Abbas demonstrated yet again how close to signing a peace deal he is. He reported that Israel had cut off water to the West Bank for Ramadan in order to harm Palestinians, a charge the Palestinian Ministry of Information continues to repeat.
The most remarkable line was this one: “The Palestinian people have experienced mass murder on an historic scale and unparalleled attacks under the eyes and ears of the international community, which gives Israel immunity. The Palestinians are going through dark days and live under the tyranny and racism of the occupation. Just a week ago, several rabbis in Israel asked their government to poison the water in order to kill the Palestinians.”
Poisoning the wells: this medieval libel against Jews still lives, we see, in the Palestinian president’s rhetoric. And as to “mass murder,” there is plenty of it in his neighborhood, not least in Syria where perhaps 500,000 Muslims have been murdered. Among them are Palestinians, who lived there in camps. But of all that he had of course nothing to say.
Abbas has benefitted greatly by comparison to his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, and Arafat’s record of corruption and terror. But the Palestinian Authority under Abbas is compiling its own record of corruption, and while Abbas continues to denounce terror in every speech, his Palestinian Authority continues to honor and celebrate terrorists who kill Israelis. Abbas lacks charisma and he wears a suit and tie, unlike Arafat, but those qualities should not be mistaken for any intention ever to sign a peace deal.
How Dare Europe Applaud a Blood-Libeler?
What his apologists fail to see, however, is that if, by some miracle, the two-state solution were to be realized by its fantasists, Abbas would instantly be thrown into the dumpster of history in every respect. The only thing unclear about “the day after” is whether his corpse or his irrelevance will come first.
In other words, Abbas has nothing to gain and everything to lose in any peace deal with Israel. He knows better than anyone that his status as a leader on the world stage depends precisely on the absence of Palestinian statehood. Yes, it is this that drives his every move and all his lies. Key among these lies are the two fictions he reiterates from every podium, including the one he occupied in Brussels on Thursday. One is that Middle East stability rests on resolving the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The other is that Israel, being responsible for the predicament in the first place, bears the burden of repairing the damage.
It therefore infuriates him every time the Israeli government urges him to come to the negotiating table, leading him to spin any overture from Jerusalem to his own advantage. His latest such act was to snub Israeli President Reuven Rivlin’s invitation to meet in the European capital.
None of this is the least bit new. In fact, at this point, it is so obvious as to be boring. In any case, most Israelis are too busy trying to avoid being stabbed, shot or hit with Molotov cocktails to listen to Abbas’ blather. Our blood is actually being spilled. We don’t need libels or lip-service to highlight that reality.
But why does anyone else still treat Abbas as a man of integrity and stature? How could hundreds of EU Parliament members applaud his vile speech, when faced with the truth about Islamist terrorism? Where do they come off believing a single word he says?
By now, what any sane representative of a free country should grasp is that it is not Palestinian wells being poisoned, but rather the hearts and minds of the Palestinian people.
Israel accuses Abbas of peddling lies, promoting blood libels
Israel excoriated Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday, saying he was peddling lies and promoting blood libels after the he told European lawmakers in Brussels that terrorism worldwide would be eradicated if only Israel withdrew from the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Abbas also pleaded with EU lawmakers to save Palestinians from Israeli “provocations,” including what he said were calls by rabbis to poison Palestinians’ water — repeating a debunked hoax story.
“Abbas showed his true colors in Brussels. Someone who refuses to meet with the [Israeli] president [Reuven Rivlin] and with Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu for direct negotiations, and someone who promotes blood libels in the European parliament, is lying when he claims his hand is outstretched in peace,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
“Israel waits for the day Abbas stops peddling lies and inciting [against Israel]. Until then, Israel will continue to defend itself against Palestinian incitement, which fuels terror,” the statement said.
In his speech earlier Thursday, Abbas cited recent criticisms of the current Israeli leadership by former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon and former prime minister Ehud Barak in condemning Israel’s “never-ending provocations” and “fascist policies.”
UN Ambassador: 'Abbas revealed his true colors'
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon reacted to the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas’s refusal to meet with President Reuven Rivlin in Brussels.
"Mahmoud Abbas has revealed his true colors to the international community as the one who is constantly rejecting peace. Instead of agreeing to meet President Rivlin, or accepting Prime Minister Netanyahu’s repeated offers to begin direct negotiations, Abbas continues to incite against Israel," he said.
The ambassador continued: "His lies that Israel is committing 'mass murder' of Palestinians, and his representative's comparison between the Jewish state and the Nazi regime are examples of the incitement spread by the Palestinian Authority."
Ambassador Danon is in Israel for the upcoming official visit by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon this coming Monday. During his visit to Israel the Secretary General will meet with the Prime Minister and the President to discuss the various diplomatic initiatives regarding the Middle East and the global fight against terrorism.
ADL Slams Abbas for Using “Age-Old Anti-Semitic Stereotypes” in Address to EU
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ debunked allegation that “certain rabbis in Israel” issued a call to poison Palestinian wells is “reminiscent of age-old anti-Semitic stereotypes,” Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, said in a statement released Thursday.
Abbas repeated the discredited charge, propagated by the PA’s Foreign Ministry earlier this week, while addressing the European Union’s Parliament.
“President Abbas reportedly came to Europe to talk peace. Instead, he interspersed claims of an interest in reconciliation with Israel with base allegations against the Jewish state, which are reminiscent of age-old anti-Semitic stereotypes. Unfortunately, conspiratorial incitement by the Palestinian Authority is not new. His charges of an Israeli effort to poison Palestinian water, and claims of Israel serving as the root of terrorism worldwide, are particularly disturbing and significant,” Greentblatt said.
Greenblatt also criticized the EU Parliament for failing to respond to Abbas’ remarks, noting “that President Abbas’ speech was met with a standing ovation by the parliamentarians present. As the international community, particularly European leadership, grows increasingly active in trying to promote an Israeli-Palestinian agreement, they must forcefully and publicly reject such offensive and dangerous incitement. How can Israel see Europe as an honest broker when its elected officials applaud a speech laden with lies and mischaracterizations?”
Abbas's blood libel 'a reminder why we have no lasting peace’
The European Jewish Congress (EJC) has called on European leaders to condemn Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ speech to the European Parliament, in which he claimed that Israeli rabbis called to poison Palestinian water and that global terrorism will end if the Israel-Palestinian conflict is resolved.
“It is unconscionable that a foreign leader proudly states a blood libel in the European Parliament and he receives a standing ovation,” said Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the EJC.
“If a far-Right politician would have made similar comments they would have been correctly discredited, but Abbas is feted like a hero and this double-standard allows him to evade scrutiny in the international arena and the negotiations table.”
Dr. Kantor further stated that President Reuven Rivlin, with the help of European leaders, attempted to arrange a meeting with Abbas while the two were in Brussels. “[Abbas’] avoidance of an EU-backed meeting with Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin demonstrates once again that he remains one of the greatest obstacles between a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” he said.
“Additionally, Abbas’ blaming Israel for global terrorism sets off dog whistles for anti-Semites and conspiracy theorists around the world. In one short speech, Abbas reminded the world that he has no interest in peace, continues to incite against Jews and Israel and uses the understandable fear of terrorism to rail against Israel and score political points.”
“The only question that remains is about the reaction of the international community to such a malicious and malevolent speech,” Kantor concluded.
2 injured in likely car-ramming attack in West Bank; suspect killed
The Israeli army on Friday said a Palestinian woman crashed her car into an Israeli vehicle in a likely car-ramming attack in the West Bank.
A soldier who was nearby shot the driver, killing her, the military said, describing the incident as an “apparent” terror attack.
An Israeli couple was hurt in the incident, which happened near the entrance to the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba, at the Elias junction.
The two Israelis, who are in their 50s, were lightly injured, according to the Magen David Adom emergency service.
They were taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center where they will stay through the weekend for observation, the hospital said.
The army said it was continuing to investigate the incident.
Most Israelis Unhappy With Government’s Handling of Palestinian Terror Wave, Poll Finds
A majority of Israelis are unhappy with the government’s handling of the ongoing wave of Palestinian terrorism, a poll published this week by Israel’s Channel 1 found.
Since last fall, 32 Israelis and two US tourists have been killed in Palestinian terrorist attacks across Israel.
Seventy-two percent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with how the government has dealt with the terror wave, with only 23% saying the government was doing an adequate job confronting the phenomenon.
In addition, 78% of respondents said they were dissatisfied with the government’s economic conduct, while a mere 19% expressed satisfaction.
According to the poll, if Knesset elections were held today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party would drop from 30 to 22 seats, but still remain the largest party in the Knesset. Meanwhile, Isaac Herzog’s Zionist Union party would plummet from 24 to 9 seats, while Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid party would rise from 11 to 20 seats, making it the new second-largest party. Jewish Home and the Joint Arab List would receive 13 seats apiece, while a theoretical new centrist party led by former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon would get 10.
More than 22 million click on Netanyahu social media response to Orlando massacre
A “masterclass in responding to tragedy” is how the Financial Times characterized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's video statement on the Orland tragedy that went viral and was viewed by more than 22 million people.
Sam Leith, the author of ‘You Talkin to Me?' Rhetoric from Aristotle to Obama, pointed in the British paper this week to Netanyahu's video as a classic example of how to respond to tragedy.
In addition to being seen by more than 22 million people, the 2:29 minute video of Netanyahu talking behind his desk about the June 12 terror attack garnered more than 583,000 likes, and was shared 667,243 times. It was by far the most watched video statement ever put out by Netanyahu, with the short videos his office posts from time to time generally attracting between 20,000 – 30,000 viewers.
We Stand Together with the LGBT Community as One

FBI investigators say they have found no evidence that Orlando shooter had gay lovers
On Tuesday, Univision aired a report in which “Miguel,” a man wearing a disguise to conceal his identity, alleged he had sex with Mateen after meeting him on the gay dating app, Grindr. He said Mateen had sex with other men too, including a threesome with a Puerto Rican who allegedly told Mateen, after having had unprotected sex with him, that he was HIV positive.
But investigators do not consider the man’s account credible, according to one senior law enforcement official with access to the investigation.
In seeking to verify the reports, federal agents have culled Mateen's electronic devices, including a laptop computer and cellphone, as well as electronic communications of those who made the claims, law enforcement officials said.
So far, they have found no photographs, no text messages, no smartphone apps, no gay pornography and no cell-tower location data to suggest that Mateen — who was twice married to women and had a young son — conducted a secret gay life, the officials said.
The FBI is continuing to explore Mateen’s past, but investigators now believe the men who made the claims are not credible, or confused Mateen with someone else. (h/t Alexi)
Erdan shutters PA-funded Israeli TV channel for 6 months
Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) on Thursday signed an order to bar the Palestinian Authority-funded Musawa television channel from operating in Israel for six months.
Erdan decided to shut down the Israel-based channel — formerly known as Palestine 48 — after learning it was operating on behalf of the Palestinian Authority, a statement said.
In July 2015, the minister ordered the Palestine 48 channel to stop operating for six months, arguing the television station was not authorized for broadcasting in Israel. The station subsequently changed its name to the Musawa Channel, Erdan said.
The Musawa Channel’s content is produced in Nazareth, in northern Israel, and sent to the West Bank city of Ramallah for editing, in an arrangement, according to Erdan, which has not been authorized. The Palestinian Authority sponsors the TV channel.
“I will not allow any harm to come to Israel’s sovereignty or give a foothold to the PA within the country,” said Erdan.
Hamas Is ISIS’s Deadly New Best Friend
Hamas has a new ally in the Middle East. The ISIS affiliate in the Sinai Peninsula, known as ISIS Sinai Province or simply Sinai Province, is helping Hamas smuggle arms and other supplies into the Gaza Strip from Egypt. This new relationship is one of the many unforeseen consequences of the Arab Spring and the growing instability in the Middle East, bringing a fresh threat to America’s Egyptian and Israeli allies. It’s also more evidence of Iran’s ambition to become a regional hegemon.
Hamas and Sinai Province are coordinating in a number of ways. Hamas is purchasing arms from the ISIS affiliate and giving the group military training (specifically on the use of antitank missiles). Hamas has also provided medical care for ISIS fighters in Gaza. Sinai Province occupies the territory where entrances to the smuggling tunnels to Gaza are located, thus making the ISIS affiliate a necessary strategic ally for Hamas. The two groups have also coordinated on attacks in the north of the Sinai Peninsula near the border with Israel, according to Egyptian officials. Hamas, of course, denies any such relationship.
There’s more to this story than just the convenience of right time, right place. Hamas and ISIS have found their way to one another in the wake of the Arab Spring and a rearranging of allies and allegiances. To understand how we’ve gotten here, we need to sift through the chain reaction sparked by the instability that followed the Arab Spring.
Hezbollah MP urges kidnapping Israeli civilians in next war
A member of parliament from the political arm of Lebanese terror group Hezbollah called for Israeli communities to be captured and civilians taken hostage in any future war with Israel.
Speaking on Hezbollah’s al-Manar TV, MP Walid Sukkarieh said that in addition to the group’s missile arsenal — said to number in the tens of thousands — an offensive to seize northern Israeli communities should be employed to prevent Israel from retaliating and implementing its “Dahiyeh Doctrine,” a military strategy that advocates the use of disproportionate force against a militant entity by destroying civilian infrastructure.
The strategy, named after a suburb of Beirut, was implemented in the Second Lebanon War in 2006 to level whole buildings in the Hezbollah stronghold using sustained airstrikes. The doctrine was first mentioned in 2008 by the then head of the IDF’s northern division and current IDF chief of staff, Gadi Eisenkot, who warned that Israel would reapply the strategy in every village in Lebanon from which Israel is attacked.
Israel is preparing to mark the 10-year anniversary of the 34-day war next month.

MEMRI: Criticism of Hizbullah on the Rise among Shi'ites in Lebanon over Involvement in Syria
Over the past two years, Lebanese Shi'ite voices have emerged every so often to criticize and express resentment against Hizbullah over its military involvement in Syria. Beginning in August 2012, anti-Hizbullah Lebanese Shi'ites implicitly criticized Hizbullah in the Lebanese press for its joining the fighting in Syria. The Hizbullah-affiliated media have sharply condemned this criticism, even accusing these Shi'ites of treason and calling them "Shi'ites of the U.S. Embassy." Gradually, even among the pro-Hizbullah Shi'ite public, particularly the families of members who have died in fighting, criticism has emerged of Hizbullah's military involvement in Syria; there have even been media reports of fissures within the organization in this matter. A Lebanese Shi'ite journalist who described herself a supporter of the resistance even wrote in a recent article that Hizbullah was an "immoral, murderous" organization.
These voices from the Shi'ite public, and the reports of young Shi'ites unmotivated to join Hizbullah's ranks, reflect a lack of confidence in the organization, and indicate that its status has been damaged among a public that has traditionally supported it.
In these circumstances, it is apparent that Hizbullah's Shi'ite opponents, both politicians and journalists, are feeling safer to express their views. Following the very high number of civilian casualties in Syria in the fighting for control of Aleppo and its environs between the two sides – the Assad regime, Hizbullah, and other militias versus the rebels – a new wave of criticism from Hizbullah's opponents has crested.
Various reports and testimony, as well as speeches by Hizbullah secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah, have indicated that even the Shi'ite public in Lebanon that has traditionally supported Hizbullah is now less convinced of the rightness of its path in Syria, and is perhaps also despairing because, while no end to the war is in sight, more and more dead and wounded Hizbullah fighters are returning to Lebanon; according to media reports, some 1,500 have already been killed. One report even stated that young Shi'ites – including sons of Hizbullah officials – are fleeing to Europe for fear that they will be recruited to fight.
Terror Task Force Chair: Obama Limiting Airstrikes on Islamic State to Protect Environment
The Obama administration has the capability to take out the vast oil infrastructure that fuels and funds the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL), the richest terrorist group in modern history, but chooses not to, suggests the chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare.
Environmental concerns limit the number of strikes President Barack Obama authorizes against certain ISIS oil targets, declared Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-NC), the task force chairman, in an interview with Breitbart News.
“I’m told the President did not want to take out the [ISIS oil] trucks because there are some concerns with the environment,” said Pittenger, who also serves as the vice-chair of the Bipartisan Task Force to Investigate Terrorism Financing.
Although the U.S. military has struck ISIS oil assets, including refineries and tanker trucks used to transport oil, more can be done, proclaimed the North Carolina Republican.
“They’ve [Obama administration] started taking out some of the [truck] convoys,” said Pittenger. “I’m still frustrated over them saying it’s hard to see the convoys when they’re on the open terrain. It’s a bit disingenous to me to say they can’t take trucks out, they can take them out. We’ve taken out some refineries. What’s the problem?”
Eli Lake: Oh. So That's Why Boeing Wanted the Iran Deal.
Almost a year after the Iran nuclear deal, we're getting a clearer picture of the coalition of activists who fought for the agreement, sparring with the "warmongers" in Congress.
It is a broad coalition. There are, of course, the peace activists and arms-control experts, who were vocal in support of the deal. There were also quieter members of this campaign, like the corporation that makes the B-52 bomber and the V-22 Osprey.
The Daily Beast's Betsy Woodruff reports that a former Boeing vice president and senior State Department official, Thomas Pickering, lobbied hard for the Iran deal while cashing checks as a consultant for the aerospace giant. Yet when Pickering wrote op-eds and signed public letters urging approval of the Iran agreement, he often neglected to mention his previous and ongoing connections to Boeing.
Now it's obvious why Boeing would have wanted the Iran deal. This week the corporation announced that it had reached a $25 billion deal to sell airliners to Iran, a move that was welcomed Tuesday by the State Department spokesman.
Close watchers of the Iran debate understood that the lifting of sanctions on Iran would potentially allow major U.S. companies like Boeing back into the Iran market. But this is not how the White House and its allies sold the Iran deal last summer. One of their sharpest arguments was that the Iran agreement was a way to avoid a war that opponents of the agreement wanted. As I reported last month, this was not an accident. The nonprofit known as the Ploughshares Fund gave money to a network of advocates and experts and urged them to paint opponents of Iran diplomacy as "pro-war," as early as 2011.
Iran’s Use of Civilian Planes to Arm Assad Could Jeopardize $25B Boeing Deal
The $25 billion aircraft deal that Boeing recently struck with Iran could be jeopardized by Tehran’s continued support of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the Associated Press (AP) reported Thursday.
Boeing’s jets will be sold to the state-owned Iran Air, which was sanctioned by the Treasury Department in 2011 partially due to its transport of “potentially dangerous Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-related cargo” and “missile or rocket components” to Syria. A Western intelligence report seen by Reuters in 2012 noted that Iran continued using civilian aircraft to transport large amounts of arms and personnel to aid Assad.
In the wake of the nuclear deal, the Obama administration dropped sanctions against Iran Air, even though U.S. officials gave no indication that the airline’s behavior had changed. In fact, Emanuele Ottolenghi, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies who tracks Iranian flights, noted that the airline flew to Damascus earlier this month, possibly to transport troops and materiel to Assad.
Turk sentenced for Erdogan-Gollum gag
A Turkish man was given a suspended prison sentence for posting pictures on the internet comparing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the bug-eyed character Gollum from the Lord of the Rings saga.
Rifat Çetin was given a suspended year in prison for five years and also lost parental custodian rights, The Guardian reported on Thursday, citing Turkish media.
He was found guilty of insulting the president with three images he posted on Facebook in 2014 showing Erdogan juxtaposed with Gollum.
Cetin said he will appeal the sentence as at the time the photos were published, Erdogan was prime minister and not the president.
According to The Guardian over 1,800 people have been accused of insulting the president, a crime that carries a sentence of up to four years behind bars. Among the accused are cartoonists and a former Miss Turkey.

Transcript of Abbas' EU speech filled with lies (UPDATE: Audio of libel)

Here is my translation of nearly all of Mahmoud Abbas' speech to the EU parliament yesterday based on the official Arabic transcript by Wafa. It includes some serious lies that should have been noticed by anyone with a passing familiarity with history.

And yet it was greeted with a standing ovation.

I highlighted some of the more egregious lies, but there were many.

In the name of of Allah the Merciful

His Excellency Mr. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament

Ladies and gentlemen, members of parliament,

First I want to thank you for inviting me to speak again in front of your parliament, I would like to express my great admiration for the democratic model,..and the high and humanitarian principles represented by the European people, and also express respect and appreciation for your positions in order to lay the foundations of truth, justice and peace in my homeland Palestine.

I am pleased to convey to you the greetings of our people, who look forward to your distinguished parliament ...to work on the empowerment of our people to restore their rights and their freedom and independence, as we appreciate all forms of support you provide for the Palestinian people, and in particular to enable it to fulfill its economy and build the independent state institutions, including making it able to lay the foundations for a democratic system that is transparent and accountable and will apply international standards under the rule of law and respect for human rights.

I can not fail here to pay tribute to your parliament's recommendation to its Member States of the European Union to recognize the State of Palestine, and thanks go also to the parliaments of the Member States, which in turn are the other had recommended to their governments to recognize the State of Palestine...

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

One hundred years have passed since the Balfour Declaration in 1917, and 68 years of Nakba, during which Israeli forces committed in 1948 the killing and massacres and appalling crimes, caused the displacement of hundreds of thousands of our people and turned them into refugees, and removed more than 488 villages and towns where people lived for thousands of years.

In 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and hundreds of thousands of our people fled, and our people are still under occupation.

In short, to say the least, on the Palestinian scene, is that Palestine is the homeland and its people, history and heritage, identity and geopolitical presence has been subjected to historical massacre and theft unmatched in the twentieth century and is still going on in the twenty first century, under the watchful eyes and of the international community.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The dark chapters of our people's lives are still continuing. Our people in Palestine live within the tyranny of occupation, its arbitrary actions and abhorrent racism, while the people who live in the refugee diaspora have lives of misery and deprivation.

But we are determined to hold out, and stay at home and work to get rid of the Israeli occupation, by political, diplomatic and peaceful means, we have come a long way, and we succeeded at the international level.

But we are still bogged down on the relationship with Israel, and we have tried very hard to return to the implementation of signed agreements, and respect for the obligations on us and them, but they refuse to carry out a minimum of them, instead devoting themselves to their occupation and control of all aspects of our lives.

In this regard, we are working to change the reality of the city of Jerusalem and to its historical identity, and protect Christian and Muslim holy sites, with the settlements continuously accelerating everywhere, in addition to land confiscations, house demolitions and constructions, and the arrest of thousands.

On the other hand, Israel is witnessing these days wildest ongoing violence, reflected by the settlers and their terror practices, as happened in the burning of the Dawabsheh family, as well as the brutal practices of the Israeli army and killings committed outside the law, and this extremism reached the extent of prompting a number of Israeli politicians and officials to direct criticism of their government, such as Herzog, the opposition leader, and Ya'alon the Defense Minister who resigned, and Ehud Barak, the former prime minister, and Deputy Chief of Staff, and a number of journalists, all of whom said that Israel exercises and the expansion of its behavior is fascist and racist, in their own words.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The resolution 181 taken by the United Nations was dedicated to sharing the land of historical Palestine between the two sides almost equally, but Israel has taken control by military force of 78% of historic Palestine in 1948, was not satisfied with that, but occupied the rest of it in 1967.

In spite of the international resolutions and the efforts of the international community, according to the vision of two-state solution, there is no independent state of Palestine yet, although it became a state in the United Nations system since 2012, and joined the many international organizations and treaties, and had been recognized by 138 countries.

However it is for the sake of peace, and an end to decades-long conflict, and the use, homelessness, and the diaspora of our people, we accepted the establishment of an independent State of Palestine on less than a quarter of the area of historic Palestine, according to the 1967 borders, and despite this great sacrifice, since the Madrid Conference and the Oslo Convention   we are still caught up in the vicious cycle of negotiations for negotiations, imposed by Israel in the game to gain time, to establish facts on the ground, and which still continues to settle them and confiscation of our land, the construction of the wall of segregation.

Israel launched, and in a matter of six years, three wars on Gaza, killing thousands, it eliminated the presence of tens of Palestinian families, destroyed thousands of homes and structures in the Gaza Strip. Since Israel's occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip a million Palestinians entered Israeli jails and still there are 7,000 prisoners in Israeli jails;

We wonder in light of this bitter and dangerous reality, is not it time, ladies and gentlemen, that the Israeli occupation of Palestine ends? Why don't international laws and resolutions apply to Israel? And why do Security Council and General Assembly resolutions remain just ink on paper when it comes to Palestine and the Palestinian people's rights? And how long it will Israel act with impunity and escape the benefits of peace, recognition of historical injustice and the offense caused to the Palestinian people?

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Our people are looking forward to life in freedom and dignity in their homeland as other peoples, and will not continually accept occupation and settlement imposed on them, no matter what the size of suffering and sacrifices. My friends, help us to remove the causes of frustration and hopelessness experienced by our people, and to get rid of the occupation which is the longest ever known in modern history.

Is it rational that the Palestinian people, one of the oldest peoples in the region and the world culture and knowledge, to be deprived of their own state? Is not it high time that they enjoys his freedom without restrictions and obstacles, and barriers and military checkpoints and gates and bridges open and close depending on whim and mood of the Israeli occupation army?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Israel has used the strength of the occupation to turn our homeland Palestine into a big prison for our people.

Here, I reiterate before you, that we do not want to remove the presence of a geo-political entity, as some claim, but we will not allow one that eliminates the presence of our land, and our right to it. The continued denial of the rights of our people in their homeland only serves extremists, and generates terrorism and violence, and gives advocates their excuse for it, do not make your on the issue of Palestine and Jerusalem as a pretext for these and those, but make them a model of justice, peace, freedom and fairness.
Abbas seems to have expanded on this in his actual speech:In order to overcome terrorism, we also need to end Israeli occupation by creating a Palestinian State within the 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital...[The absence of a two-state solution would give] “pretext to those who commit terrorism in the name of religion. Once this occupation ends, those pretexts will disappear and extremism will be over as will terrorism...There will be no more terrorism in the Middle East nor elsewhere in the world.”

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

We look forward to the European Union and its member states and its honored parliament, for the continuation of efforts and played a political and diplomatic role of an actor, all the way to a peaceful solution just and lasting peace in our region, according to the two-state solution on the basis of 1967 and the resolutions of international legitimacy. Both Israel and Palestine have enjoyed EU partnership agreements and neighborly common membership in the Union for the Mediterranean, which qualifies the European Union in order to play this role, and so as to achieve security and stability for all.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

To be clear and explicit as is always my habit in my conversations, and I answer some questions that may inspire some people, we want the two-state solution and the establishment of the State of Palestine on the entire territory of the West Bank, according to the borders of June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, we do not object to the reciprocal minor adjustments.

And that the refugee issue is handled in accordance with Resolution 194, as stipulated in the Arab Peace Initiative, meaning a just and agreed solution to the refugee issue.

We reject the transitional solutions, and reject the state with temporary borders, and we want the Arab peace initiative to be applied also approved without changes.

One issue raised by the Israelis is incitement, and despite the fact that Israeli incitement is uninterrupted and practices of the occupation and the settlers do not stop, and to address this phenomenon, we call to reactivate the tripartite committee the problem of Israel and Palestine and the United States of America, in 1998, with Mr. Netanyahu personally, and welcome to enter the European Union fourth party in this Committee.

[Here is where Abbas seems to have said "Only a week ago, a number of rabbis in Israel announced, and made a clear announcement, demanding that their government poison the water to kill the Palestinians. Isn't that clear incitement to commit mass killings against the Palestinian people?")

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I assure you that Palestine, if Israeli occupation and settlement ended, and it gained its independence and sovereignty, it should happen soon, it can be represented as a civilized and quality addition in our region, and be an oasis of stability and will be a refined culture and civilization. The capital will be the in East Jerusalem, with the doors open to all the followers of the three monotheistic religions without discrimination.

...We will continue to build the Palestinian state institutions, because the right of self-determination of the Palestinian people is not subject to negotiations with Israel, and we want the continuation of your help with this, and we have as well dozens of colleges and universities, which enjoys a good reputation, and contribute to the construction of an educational and education renaissance in our country, which is a research and scientific mixed institutions, both at the level of teaching staff or on the level of students we are a free society, and open-minded, enjoy where women are just like men with the same rights and obligations, and everyone is equal before the Law.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

In the third of this month, a ministerial meeting was held in Paris, according to the French initiative, which included 28 countries and three international organizations, and we appreciate the noble effort, we look forward to see results in the convening of an international peace conference, according to international law and international legitimacy and the resolutions of the Security Council, and the Arab peace initiative as approved at the Beirut summit in 2002, and the roadmap, and the agreements signed, and determine the time limits of the negotiations and implementation, as well as the formation mechanism and the framework for follow-up, similar to what has been with Iran.

As the European Council of Ministers adopted at its last meeting, during the final statement of the meetings of Paris on the third of June 2016, they and the Arab brothers and the vast majority of countries in the world support this French effort. President Francois Hollande has assured me that a few days ago that France is determined to continue right up to the international peace conference before year-end, and stressed the need to start preparations for the convening and success of the conference, through specialized work teams, and assured him of our full support to these efforts, and I reiterate before you that we as Palestinians and Arabs, we stand with you in the same trench to defeat terrorism and extremism.

This will only be achieved by an end the Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine on the 1967 borders, and whose capital is East Jerusalem, and to live in peace and security alongside Israel.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The failure of the State of Palestine, and the failure of the idea of a two-state solution that would prolong the life of conflict and strife, it will not only serve the extremists, and the advocates of violence and terrorism, which live on and hurt many countries in our region, and caused waves of displacement of refugees flowing into Europe, and including Palestinian refugees fleeing with them, who hope to be treated the same manner as other refugees, having lost everything fleeing the horrors of war, murder and terrorism, which we condemn whatever its source, and we must defeat terrorism and resolving these conflicts, which unfortunately has no prospects to be solved in the foreseeable future.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

As for the internal Palestinian situation, we are working to unify our land and our people, and to end the siege on the Gaza Strip, and we are still working to end the division, through the formation of a national unity government committed to PLO policies, international and regional obligations and commitments, and go for presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible . On this occasion, we thank you very much for your help in the reconstruction of what was destroyed by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Our hand is extended for peace, and we have the will and determination to achieve it: do you have such a will? Do you have to prepare your positions and admit the historical injustice inflicted upon our people and their rights? Just as you so, we also have our narrative, an honest narrative. Our presence on this earth has not stopped since the dawn of history, and to this day, our rights to our land and our holy Christian and Muslim princples are fixed. Only peace and genuine reconciliation can help recognize our rights and to repair the damage.

I assure you that we are not in favor turning the political conflict into a religious conflict, but peace is the interest of all, and I hope this to be the case for you, my neighbors. Come to make a lasting peace, away from the power and domination and control and expansion and settlement. Peace and coexistence based on the foundations of justice, truth and respect for the dignity and humanity and freedom of each party on an equal footing, is the real guarantee for security and stability and a promising future for the generations to come, and your generations.

In conclusion, I thank you again, Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen, members of parliament, and I count on your support and my people, and your noble efforts to achieve peace in our region.

Long livethe Palestinian - European friendship, to make Palestine the Holy Land an oasis peace and security to its people and to its neighbors and the world.
Peace be upon you.

The EU and US cannot condemn Abbas' blood libel

It is 24 hours after Abbas' blood libel speech at the EU parliament.

It was widely reported - Reuters and the New York Times both featured his lies in their articles. Even Al Arabiya's coverage noted that there was no evidence for the claim.

Yet the only groups that have condemned it so far are groups that are explicitly Zionist to begin with. (Or they claim to be, in J-Street's case, even though that group seems to have ignored Abbas' many previous statements that are nearly as inflammatory and false.)

The EU parliament gave Abbas a a 30-second standing ovation after the speech. European Parliament President Martin Schulz welcomed him by saying, “Your presence here today, the day after President Rivlin delivered his address, sends a strong signal that the will to achieve a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine is still alive." But he has been silent since then.

The State Department spokesperson surreally talked about the incident but didn't come close to condemning it.

QUESTION: Are you familiar with the comments – the part of his speech in which he said that there were some rabbis who were wanting to poison Palestinian water?
MR KIRBY: I’ve seen the comments. I can’t confirm the veracity of that.
QUESTION: You can’t – I’m not asking you to confirm it. I’m asking you what you think of it.
MR KIRBY: Well, look, I mean --
QUESTION: I mean, is this the kind of – is this the kind of language that you guys want coming from someone who says that he’s a partner for peace and wants to negotiate, and then he accuses the other side of trying to poison his people?
MR KIRBY: We’ve been – without speaking to specific comments, as you know I’m not wont to do, we have been very clear – the Secretary’s been clear about our concerns about inflammatory rhetoric and incitement and --
QUESTION: Well, this is before the EU parliament. What --
MR KIRBY: Again, we want – here’s how I’d put it, Matt: We --
QUESTION: You don’t think it’s --
MR KIRBY: As we’ve said before, we --
QUESTION: You don’t think it might be true, do you?
MR KIRBY: I – again, I’ve seen nothing to indicate the truth of that. But we have long said what we want is for both sides to ratchet down not just the violence but the rhetoric, which can inflame some of the violence. And we just don’t find that sort of rhetoric helpful.
Oh, accusing Jews of poisoning the wells is not "helpful" and is an opportunity for both sides to ratchet down the rhetoric. Thanks for those strong words from Israel's best friend.

The fact is that while diplomats routinely and forcefully condemn Israel for actions that their own states are far more guilty of, there is nothing but praise for Mahmoud Abbas as he spouts his lies and incitement (Unbelievably, Abbas even began the speech saying that he is against incitement.)

The double standards cannot be clearer. And while they would deny this up and down, it is hard to construe the lack of reaction to this as anything other than an attempt to paper it over because the lie of Abbas as a peacemaker is too strong to be overcome by pesky facts.

The EU applauds a blood libel (ElderToons)

Today, Mahmoud Abbas accused rabbis in Israel of encouraging their flock to poison Palestinian water supplies.

And the EU members applauded.

It is not exactly the first time that Abbas and the PA have made wild antisemitic accusations. Yet the ardor that the West shows for Abbas continues unabated.

Here are only three examples, in cartoon form, showing that Abbas can literally say anything and be respected as a man of peace.

06/23 Links Pt2: Obama’s Humiliating Terror Blinders; Alan Dershowitz: Combating BDS by legislation

From Ian:

Obama’s Humiliating Terror Blinders
Attorney General Loretta Lynch thinks you’re stupid. Or, at least, her boss does.
According to CBS News justice reporter Paula Reid, the Department of Justice is trying to shift the national conversation surrounding the massacre at an Orlando gay club “more to hate and not just terrorism.” The layperson may see only a modest distinction between “hate” and “terrorism.” The latter is generally a violent expression of the former. For the Obama administration, there is a world of difference in the two concepts—the foremost being that the White House can’t be directly blamed for increased incidents of hate.
“I cannot tell you definitely that we will ever narrow it down to one motivation,” Lynch told reporters while expounding on a litany of reasons why a disturbed and violent individual may go on a rampage. “This was clearly an act of terror and an act of hate.” CBS appropriately headlined the attorney general’s attempt at obfuscation “a motive may never be known.” Well, the attorney general’s motives are surely known.
The DOJ sacrificed all plausible deniability that it was not trying to confuse the public about the Orlando shooter’s true motives when they thought it prudent to omit the shooter’s references to the Islamic State in a transcript of the 911 call in which he confessed to his crime.
“In the name of God the Merciful, the beneficent,” said Omar Mateen on the night of his rampage. “I pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may God protect him [said in Arabic], on behalf of the Islamic State.”
It is an act of extraordinary hubris to dismiss what this self-styled ISIS militant has said and impose upon him some other series of motives that complicate the story. Surely, Lynch would prefer we be talking about “hate” and the supposedly elusive definition of Islamist terror rather than her announcement that the FBI has apparently lost track of Mateen’s wife, who was almost certainly an accomplice in this murder.
Tarek Fatah: Whitewashing Islamist Terror
Almost 10 years ago, Maclean's magazine published an essay by Mark Steyn, titled "The future belongs to Islam." In it, he suggested, "the West is growing old and enfeebled, and lacks the will to rebuff those who would supplant it."
It was an extract from Steyn's then best-selling book America Alone, where he concluded, "It's the end of the world as we've known it." Steyn wrote:
We are witnessing the end of the late 20th-century progressive welfare democracy. The children and grandchildren of those fascists and republicans who waged a bitter civil war for the future of Spain now shrug when a bunch of foreigners blow up their capital. Too sedated even to sue for terms, they capitulate instantly.
There was an outcry among Canada's Islamists, who took Steyn and Maclean's to the Ontario and British Columbia Human Rights Commissions. My fellow Sun columnist, Farzana Hassan, and I wrote a rejoinder in Maclean's titled, "Mark Steyn has a right to be wrong."
Today, I recognize, Steyn was right and I was wrong.
If there were any doubts the West is abdicating its responsibility to stand up for Western values, the amateur attempts by the FBI to cover up the Islamist nature of the Orlando attack removed them.
President Barack Obama and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton deflected attention from the obvious Islamic nature of the terrorism to a debate about gun control.
An FBI spokesman did the same when he downplayed the role of Islamism in the attack, editorializing that the killer, "does not represent the religion of Islam, but a perverted view, which based on what we know today, was inspired by extremist killers."
No Way to Treat a child. Again, J Street finds itself on the wrong side
Ever the optimists, American Muslims for Palestine has proudly proclaimed that 20 of the 535 members of Congress have signed onto a letter filled with spurious accusations against Israel.
Twenty of of 535 Congressional Representatives. Just under 4%. The signers are listed below.
The letter, introduced by Betty McCollum, a Democrat from Minnesota asks "Does a life of utter hopelessness...directly contribute to the violence?" She's asking the wrong question.
The rampant abuse of Palestinians children by those responsible for their very safety- their parents and their government- goes unmentioned in the McCollum letter.
There is no mention of Hamas run summer camps, that teach soldiering skills to children as young as 12.

Alan Dershowitz: Combating BDS by legislation: Different approaches, same goal
Regardless, recent claims by the pro-BDS punditry that any anti-BDS regulations are McCarthyite is both misleading, and insulting to the victims of real McCarthyism who were punished for their ideas, speeches and associations, not for their actions in refusing to do business based on national origin. Yes, anti-BDS regulations often results in lists of companies that discriminate against Israel, just as there are lists today of store and building owners who refuse to do business with, for example, African-Americans, LGBTQ, or Muslims. Proof is required that a business engaged in a discriminatory boycott by singling out Israeli entities, or individuals based on their national origin, or political convictions, and there is a process for challenging inclusion on any list. The only McCarthyist blacklist is that which has been complied by BDS enforcers – a list I am proud to be on – of supporters of Israel and of those who seek to “normalize” relations between Israelis and Palestinians.
To be clear: anti-BDS regulations should go no further than the counterboycott of companies that actually engage in discriminatory actions. No one, not even the most rabid BDS-activist, should face legal recriminations for expressing an opinion that is supportive of BDS, or for encouraging others to support BDS. Political speech – even bigoted, misguided political speech – is clearly protected by the constitution. The wording of Governor Cuomo’s executive order in this regard raises some red flags: if regulators target institutions for “promot[ing] others to engage in any [BDS] activity” by means of speech rather than economic pressure, the courts should strike down that provision, while upholding the remainder of the order. Similarly, the bill currently under consideration in the Kansas legislature that would defund academic institutions for funding student associations supportive of BDS impacts speech and association rights of pro-Palestinian students and faculty members. It should be revised to avoid any constitutional challenges.
That said, most anti-BDS measures are clearly directed at discriminatory business activities, and not at speech or advocacy.
So applied, such counter-boycott regulations will promote political, artistic and cultural freedoms by imposing economic sanctions on those BDS bigots who are seeking to suppress such freedoms by discriminating against Israeli, and pro-Israeli advocates, artists, cultural figures and businesses.
JPost Editorial: Coping with BDS
Two recent international conferences indicate that Israel is finally being moved to do something officially about the BDS Movement, but, much like talk about the weather, such efforts accept the inevitability of boycott without being able to do anything effective to change it.
In March the first Israeli anti-BDS conference was held to much fanfare in Jerusalem, while this month an even grander production was mounted at the UN General Assembly.
Speakers at both events agreed that BDS is a modern instantiation of anti-Semitism that poses a danger to Israel, while asserting that this is not an existential threat. There was a consensus that, although BDS is succeeding, it cannot be termed a success; while it is not an existential threat, it must nevertheless be taken as a serious threat; and while Israel’s economy is strong enough to withstand it, Israel must devote increasing amounts of its budget to fighting it.
There are similar contradictions regarding the effects of BDS on American college youth. On the one hand, a recent Gallup poll found that 54 percent of all young respondents reported sympathizing more with Israel than with the Palestinians, while 23% sympathized more with the Palestinians.
In 2005, 51% reported sympathizing more with Israel. Nevertheless, this spring “Israeli Apartheid Week” was observed on some 250 campuses across the US.
Defying BDS, Liberty University to Invest Millions in Israel
In a show of solidarity with Israel and a move against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, Liberty University will invest $5 million in Israel, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on Monday.
Spearheaded by Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr., the plan is to invest the money in a healthcare fund run by Permanens Capital, which has an office in Israel. According to a statement released by the university, the target will be Israeli companies dealing in “oncology, biopharmaceuticals, and digital health, with a strong focus on cancer immunotherapy.”
“Liberty is glad to be part of supporting the only democracy that’s a close ally of the United States that is in such turmoil right now,” Falwell told the newspaper. He said that the idea to invest in Israel came from author Gerald Strober — who wrote a book about his late father, Jerry Falwell Sr. — who suggested that to stand up against divestment calls, Liberty should make a point to invest specifically in Israel.
Falwell told the newspaper that Liberty University has a long-standing history of support for the Jewish state, dating back to when his father was the school’s president. Falwell said that his father’s support for Israel stemmed from his religious convictions and the teaching found in Genesis 12:3 regarding God’s covenant with Abraham: “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
Film Review: Promises
The Film's Target Audience
The biggest problem is that the target audience for the film is precisely those who are still unfamiliar with the details and history of the conflict. The filmmakers promote the documentary as a learning tool for young people. Co-producer Justine Shapiro suggests the documentary was tailored toward children and teens, age peers of the film's protagonists, to teach them about the Arab-Israeli conflict. It is marketed as part of an educational curriculum for middle schoolers, along with a 50+ page study guide that includes lesson plans correlating to different scenes, classroom activities, student worksheets, etc. The PBS documentary program "Point of View," which aired Promises in December 2001, similarly includes an online "lesson plan."
It is easy to see why a teacher might be attracted to a film whose protagonists are his students' age peers. The film draws viewers in, with charming, sweet and articulate children discussing the ongoing, grim situation in which they were born and raised.
Teachers, however, should not be seduced by the appealing protagonists. The documentary's drawbacks – the misleading information, omission of context, politicized scene editing and datedness – create an inaccurate and partisan image of the conflict which can leave a lasting but erroneous impression on vulnerable children.
PreOccupiedTerritory: World Waiting To See How Jews Have Decided UK Will Vote (satire)
Observers across the globe are watching the progress and outcome of Britain’s referendum today, anxious to discover whether the Jews who control global affairs have ruled that the UK will remain in the European Union or leave.
As of this morning (Thursday), polling stations began registering voters’ choices, but the result of the process – which the Jews have secretly manipulated to get the result that cements their control of world government and finance – will not be announced at least until tomorrow morning, with reviews and challenges possible afterwards. Given the suspense in which the country, the Continent, and all the affected trade partners now find themselves, financial markets have reacted with jitters over the possible departure of Britain from the Union, a fact that experts say reflects both the fateful nature of the referendum and the Jewish control of those markets.
“Part of the control this cabal exerts over us is the anxiety it cultivates in us over money matters,” explained noted Jewish expert and MP Ken Livingstone. “It’s a convincing façade to have the financial markets all over the world reacting to various developments, as if it isn’t all controlled by a shadowy Jewish group of elders. They’ve got enough people duped into thinking their vote matters and that the Elders of Zion haven’t already decided whether Britain stays or leaves that people are out and voting. The important thing is, though, that no matter what the result, we have a way of explaining how it benefits Jewish control of the world.”
UK Media Watch prompts substantive improvement to Times of London water story
However, though the Independent still refuses to budge, after a series of emails to editors at Times of London – which included information we received from COGAT and Mekorot – they agreed to make one substantive change, adding the following additional text to the online version of their article:
This is important, and reinforces our central arguments from the beginning of this story – facts which totally undermine Palestinian charges.
Water Shortages were largely caused by an increase in demand and a shortage of supply from the mountain aquifer.
These water shortages has affected both Jewish and Palestinian communities in the West Bank.

Israel actually increased the water supply to Palestinians in Hebron and Bethlehem to accommodate Muslims observing Ramadan.

Unfortunately, they only made a small, relatively insignificant revision to the headline and opening sentence.
However, we sincerely commend editors at Times of London for agreeing to add the additional text.
Israel Recycles Water, Amira Hass Recycles False Water Charges
Amira Hass must really like false Palestinian charges that Israel is stealing their water, since she keeps on repeating those false Palestinian charges, requiring us to repeat the refutation.
Whereas previously Hass charged that profligate Israelis "use three times more water a day in their households as West Bank Palestinians do," in her latest effort she charges that:
On average, the Palestinians consume 73 liters per person per day. Below the recommended minimum. Israelis consume a daily 180 liters on average, and there are those who say even more.
She also charges that "Israel sells the Palestinians water that it first stole from them," and:
With the Oslo Accords, Israel imposed an outrageous, racist, arrogant and brutal division of water sources in the West Bank: 80 percent for Israelis (on both sides of the Green Line), and 20 percent for the Palestinians ...
Hass is dead wrong about the relative usage of water by Israelis and Palestinians, and about her other charges too, but before getting into details and numbers, it's important to illustrate a deeper distortion in her claims.
BBC R4 reveals what ‘really’ threatens to reignite Hamas-Israel conflict
Listeners also heard from a similarly unchallenged porter whom Hosken asked “what he thought about the attack in Tel Aviv”.
“I feel happy because they have taken Jerusalem, they have taken our land and it’s right to defend ourself. The operation is a natural because they took our land and look what they are doing in Gaza: they cut the electricity, they close the border.”
Hosken did not explain to listeners that the electricity cuts in the Gaza Strip have nothing at all to do with Israel and are the result of a dispute between Hamas and the PA. He went on:
“…but could there be another war soon? Even before Tel Aviv there was concern at the appointment as Israeli defence minister of Avigdor Lieberman – a hawk when it comes to the Palestinians and a man who has supported the assassination of Hamas leaders in the past.”
Mapping changes in the terminology used by the BBC to describe Temple Mount
Earlier this month the BBC Trust’s Editorial Standards Committee responded to an appeal concerning a complaint about the inaccuracy of the statement “It’s [Jerusalem’s Old City] home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, sacred to Muslims and Jews” with findings which support the earlier response from BBC Complaints:
“They note your points and accept that [the reporter] shouldn’t have said that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was sacred to both Jews and Muslims. She meant to say the compound (which includes the Mosque and the Dome of the Rock).”
In addition to promoting its preferred terminology “al Aqsa Mosque compound”, the PLO document from November 5th also states:
“Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound, sometimes referred to as the Noble Sanctuary (“Haram al-Sharif” in Arabic), is the compound that contains Al Aqsa building itself, ablution fountains, open spaces for prayer, monuments and the Dome of the Rock building. This entire area enclosed by the walls which spans 144 dunums (almost 36 acres), forms the Mosque.”
A response from BBC Complaints received by BBC Watch earlier this year suggests that the BBC has internalised that claim:
“In the context of the interview “the area” he was referring to was the expanded prayer plaza which Muslims believe is an inseparable part of al-Aksa Mosque…”
So despite the BBC’s style guide not having undergone any changes, we see that de facto the BBC has adopted both the language – ‘al Aqsa Mosque compound’ – and the political ideology found in the PLO’s November 2014 recommendations. Apparently BBC editorial staff do not grasp how that compromises the corporation’s supposed impartiality.
‘Holy of Holies’ Apparently is as Washington Post Does, Not Judaism Says
Heard the one about the Holy of Holies? At The Washington Post, when it comes to Christianity, yes; Judaism, no.
On June 16, CAMERA requested a clarification from The Washington Post to an article headlined “Israelis parade through Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter,” which ran in the Post's June 6 print edition (as “Israeli revelers give Palestinians the finger in march through Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter,” online June 5).
The article, by Post Jerusalem Bureau Chief William Booth with Jerusalem correspondent Ruth Eglash contributing, said, among other things:
“Earlier in the day, Israel's High Court of Justice turned down a last-minute appeal and ruled that the annual parade could take place on its schedule route through the Muslim Quarter to the Western Wall, a site of Jewish prayer and devotion.
“But hundreds of marchers could be seen wearing T-shirts that showed the destruction of the al-Aqsa Mosque and the imagined rebuilding of the Third Jewish Temple on the raised esplanade in the Old City that is holy to both religions.”
The wording emphasized was not only vague where specificity was called for, but implicitly diminished the Jewish nature of and connection to the locations noted.
Context missing from BBC News’ backgrounder on Strait of Tiran
On June 21st an article was published on the BBC News website’s Middle East page under the headline “Egypt court quashes Red Sea islands’ transfer to Saudis“. At the bottom of that article concerning an internal Egyptian debate appears a background insert titled “Why the Red Sea islands matter”.
There, BBC audiences were correctly informed that:
“Sanafir and Tiran are islands that lie about 4km (2 nautical miles) apart in the Red Sea. Tiran sits at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, on a strategically important stretch of water called the Strait of Tiran, used by Israel to access the Red Sea”
However, they were also given the following context-free information:
“Israel captured the islands in 1956 and 1967, subsequently returning them to Egypt both times”
The BBC did not bother to inform readers why that was the case.
Four Publications Fix False Michael Oren Quote
The New York Times, Telegraph, Huffington Post, and Daily Caller have all corrected or pulled an inaccurate quote following communication with CAMERA and its British department, UK Media Watch.
The misquote of Israel's former ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, originated on Twitter and quickly spread to the media organizations. (For details, see CAMERA's fact check.)
The Telegraph, Huffington Post, and Daily Caller each pulled the misquote shortly after it was brought to their attention and replaced it with the actual quotation.
NY anti-Semitism exhibit shows how history repeats itself
In 1938 Helga Fränkel carefully filled out a detailed questionnaire, requesting permission to marry the father of her children. Her request was denied: She was Jewish and he was not, and in Nazi Germany that violated the Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor, which forbade marriages and extramarital relations between Jews and non-Jews.
Today that questionnaire sits under glass, one of 50 objects on display in “Anti-Semitism 1919-1939,” an exhibit at the New-York Historical Society. But more than history is on display in this narrow gallery — the exhibit serves as a reminder about what happens when authorities tap into reservoirs of hatred, bigotry and fear.
“When we decided to do this exhibit anti-Semitism was once again on the rise in Europe; but it was not yet so apparent that anti-Semitism was again on the rise in the US. It is important to see how hate can be transmitted, and how present and dangerous it is today,” said Dr. Louise Mirrer, President and CEO of the New-York Historical Society.
For those who see a link between the objects on display and continued increase in anti-Semitism here in the US and abroad means the exhibit is fulfilling its mission, Mirrer said.
'Anti-Semitic' rhetoric in NY Congressional race
Accusations of anti-Semitism have arisen in the congressional race for New York's 13th district.
Last week Assemblyman Keith Wright shared an article accusing an opponent of not helping his district because the opponent is Jewish. Councilman Mark Levine accused Wright of using anti-Jewish hatred in an effort to appeal to Dominican voters.
Levine's office translated part of the article, which was in Spanish, as: "In 2013 he did not support the community leader Luis Tejada for a seat on the City Council for District 7 and supported the Jew Mark Levine, among other slights the Dominicans remember."
At first a spokesperson for Wright countered that charges of anti-Semitism are "absurd" because Wright did not write the article himself. Later, however, the assemblyman said that the staffer responsible the tweet "violated protocol." It has since been taken down.
"I've come to expect this kind of ugly rhetoric from the gutters of New York politics. Shame on Assemblyman Wright for peddling it" Levine told Jewish Insider.
Jewish man beaten in Berlin anti-Semitic attack
Unknown perpetrators kicked and beat a 21-year-old Jewish man wearing a kippah after slurring him with anti-Semitic insults.
The victim, identified as Oliver Geffers of Bonn, was slightly injured in the Tuesday evening attack but did not seek medical help, according to the police report on the incident. The state criminal police agency is investigating.
Geffers is not Orthodox but wears a kippah in public because he strongly identifies as Jewish and believes Jews should not be afraid to show their identity, a source close to Geffers told JTA. Geffers works as a volunteer at a refugee center in Cologne and said he does not experience open anti-Semitism from refugees, according to the source.
According to the police report, the incident occurred Tuesday at approximately 9:30 p.m. in a park along Puschkinallee, a main thoroughfare. The victim said the three attackers appeared to be Middle Eastern. They commented on his yarmulke and insulted him with anti-Semitic comments. One of them then beat and kicked him, he reported, before all the men fled.
Lithuanian mayor dismantles building made from Jewish headstones
The municipality of Vilnius in Lithuania began dismantling a Soviet-era structure made from Jewish headstones.
Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius removed the first stone from the structure housing an electricity and heating generator on Olandų Street Wednesday, the mayor‘s office said in a statement.
The generator was built by the Soviet authorities of Lithuania between 1965 and 1968, when it was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR. The headstones had been removed from a Jewish cemetery on Olandų Street.
“After 26 years as an independent country it is now the time to remove these stones, which are a clear mark of disrespect to our Jewish community,” said Šimašius. “The stones will be removed from the generator and moved to a memorial, which will be built on Olandų Street with the cooperation of Vilnius’ Jewish community.”
Sarah Silverman target of anti-Semitic rant by ex-reality TV star Tila Tequila
Former reality TV star Tila Tequila accused Sarah Silverman and the Jews of killing Jesus before saying the comedian was next on a “celebrity sacrifice” list.
Tequila, born Tila Nguyen, was responding on Monday to a fan’s suggestion that a Donald Trump presidency would bring Jesus back to life.
“Jesus will come back too just don’t tell the Jews about it,” Twitter user Kaiser Poopfist I tweeted at Tequila.
The former “A Shot at Love” star wrote back that Silverman and the Jews should be informed.
The triple parentheses around “(((People)))” is known as the echo symbol, which is used by white supremacists and anti-Semites to identify Jews online. It was added to the Anti-Defamation League’s hate symbols database earlier this month after it appeared in a publicized anti-Semitic attack on Jewish New York Times editor Jonathan Weisman.
Silverman responded to Tequila’s attack in comedic fashion on Twitter.
Assyrian Bishop Wants Friendship With Israel
“Israel has stability, the ear of the world community, and the ability to be a modern state in the Middle East. Israel has withstood the test of time,” says Mar Awa Royel, the first American-born Assyrian bishop in history. Born David Royel in Chicago, Illinois on July 4, 1975, His Grace Mar Awa, Bishop of the Assyrian Church of the East, who presides over the Diocese of California, conveys his desire for friendship between Israel and the Assyrian people.
Noting that “we’ve had a long history,” he cites prophecy in the Book of Isaiah in order to provide a biblical foundation for his desired brotherhood with Israel, and describes several church-organized pilgrimages that he has led to Israel.
While there are very few Assyrian Christians in Israel, until 1853 the Assyrian Church of the East shared a part of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Numerous records and Assyrian manuscripts are now in the possession of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Israel.
Bishop Royel also described the relations and commonalities between Jews and Assyrian Christians in Iraq prior to the establishment of the state of Israel. Even after the Arab Muslim conquest of the Middle East, which installed Arabic as the lingua franca of the region, Assyrians continued to speak Assyrian.

Israel’s Airobotics raises $28.5m for operator-free drones
Israeli start-up Airobotics said today it has built a new kind of drone platform that will allow companies to operate drones without the need for expensive and skilled drone operators.
The Petah Tikva, Israel-based company said it has raised $28.5 million in funding from investors including California’s BlueRun Ventures; Noam Bardin, the former chief executive of Waze, the navigation app that was bought by Google; and Richard Wooldridge, Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects chief operating officer.
By taking the drone pilot and operator out of the equation, Airobotics removes the most expensive and hard-to-find component of industrial drone operations, the company said in a statement.
The system is made up of three major parts: a drone, which can fly 30-minute missions at a time while carrying a one kilogram payload and using videos to provide customers with real time aerial insight; the airbase, a completely automated base station from which the drone launches and lands on its own, without needing human intervention, and software, which enables users “to control and manage missions with one click.”
Off The Beaten Track: Urban Navigation App Sidekix Bases Walking Routes On Your Interests
Have you ever unintentionally stumbled upon a hidden gem along the way to a main attraction when exploring a new city? A new Israeli app seeks to intentionally lead people to these lesser known spots that are worth a slight detour.
Called Sidekix, this urban on-foot navigation app customizes routes based on the interests and needs of its users. “Sidekix is an app for people who walk, which is different from other navigation apps that are primarily geared toward driving,” founder Jenny Drezin tells NoCamels.
Unlike many other popular navigation apps, Sidekix prioritizes unique routes over fastest routes, always by foot. According to Drezin, “the idea behind Sidekix is that there are many ways to get to the same point, and often taking a different route or going a bit out of your way can give you a completely different experience.”
Before embarking on your trip, you can select among a wide variety of interest spots on Sidekix: Historical landmarks, art galleries, restaurants or bars. Once you define your set of passions, the app will lead you through a personalized journey, using recommendations from social media, lifestyle websites and local bloggers.
Israel Military Industries Inks $39 Million Deal with US Civilian Market
The Israel Military Industries (IMI) weapons manufacturer confirmed Tuesday that it has signed a $39 million deal to supply the US civilian market with small caliber ammunition.
The deal includes supplying US-based distributors with light munitions used for hunting, sports, and in shooting ranges, the company said.
The order was placed by distributors that IMI has been collaborating with for more than two years, and is based on a business strategy seeking to direct one-third of the company’s sales to the civilian market.
“Working with the Israel Defense Forces and various special forces gives the Small Caliber Ammunition Division a significant advantage in the international market,” said Israel Shmilovitz, head of the IMI Small Caliber Ammunition Division.
Meanwhile, the US Army has recently increased its orders with IMI, including key components for its flagship Modular Active Protection System program.
Accenture buys Israel’s Maglan, sets up cyber security R&D lab
Accenture, a New York Stock Exchange-traded professional services and consulting company, said it has acquired Maglan, a privately held Israeli cyber security company, in a move to increase its ability to provide clients with cyber defense services using Israeli innovation.
Accenture, which has been active in Israel since 2001, also said it has set up a new research and development lab in Herzliya, focusing on cyber security projects. Both announcements were made at Israel’s 6th Annual International Cybersecurity Conference taking place in Tel Aviv this week.
Maglan specializes in offensive cyber simulation, vulnerability countermeasures, cyber forensics and malware defenses, Accenture said, without disclosing financial terms of the deal.
Based in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, Maglan was founded in 1998 and has a number of clients in the financial services, telecommunications and automotive industries, Accenture said in a statement.
LightCyber raises $20 million to boost sales globally
LightCyber, the Israeli cybersecurity company headquartered in Los Altos, California, has raised $20 million from investors to boost its sales and marketing efforts.
Investors included US-based Access Industries, through its Israeli technology investments entity, Claltech, and Shlomo Kramer, the founder and chief executive of Cato Networks, the company said in a statement. Existing investors Battery Ventures, Glilot Capital Partners and Amplify Partners also participated in this second funding round, bringing the total amount of funds raised to $34 million.
LightCyber says its Magna platform “accurately and efficiently” detects attacks on companies regardless of the kind of attack, reducing the length of the event and minimizing the damage. Using behavioral and active breach detection, the platform continuously monitors the network, its users and device behavior to find attacker activities. Once the system alerts customers about an attack, it is an actual meaningful event and not a false alarm, the company says on its website.
Lloyd’s of London has estimated that cyberattacks cost businesses $400 billion a year while Juniper Research says that the average cost of each data breach will top $150 million by 2020. Today, less than 1 percent of enterprises have the capability to find an active attacker at work on their network before theft or damage occurs, the company said.
New high-tech weapon in the war on cervical cancer
In the 1940s, George Papanicolaou’s Pap smear was introduced and became the standard cancer screening test for cervical cancer, then the number one killer of women and today the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide.
Incredibly, Pap remains the standard despite severe drawbacks. The smear must be sent to a lab for analysis (which takes several days), has a high rate of inaccurate results, and samples only the outer surface of the cervix although cancer begins in the inner layers.
Furthermore, the Pap test isn’t readily available in developing parts of the world such as India, Africa and China, where cervical cancer is still the leading cause of death among women.
The Israeli company Biop Medical is designing and testing a better alternative: a state-of-the-art colposcope, the instrument used to check women for gynecological disease. Colposcopy is usually performed after a positive Pap smear, and if it detects suspicious cells the woman must schedule a biopsy.
Biop’s device does everything in one visit. It optically scans the inner layers of the cervix for early signs of cancer, analyzes the images instantly and indicates where to perform a biopsy if necessary.
Israeli Spokesman in New Delhi: Indian Water Minister’s Upcoming Trip to Jerusalem Signifies Additional Boost to Bilateral Agricultural Ties (INTERVIEW)
The upcoming visit of India’s water minister to Israel is a “very important step forward” in furthering bilateral ties, a spokesman from the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi told The Algemeiner on Wednesday.
Ohad Horsandi said that one of the main purposes of Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti’s trip to Israel is “to gain first-hand knowledge of Israeli technologies and expertise in the water sector — including desalination and urban water systems — and how these techniques can be implemented back in India.”
According to Horsandi, one of the most significant aspects of the relationship between the two countries is the optimization of Israeli agricultural expertise and technology — and water conservation. As India grapples with the latter, he said, “This year, water has been at the center of our attention.”
And Israel, he said, is a world leader in making agriculture flourish in an arid environment with limited water.
Horsandi told The Algemeiner that 80 percent of Israel’s domestic wastewater is treated and recycled for agricultural use, with nearly 50 percent of total water used for agriculture. India is one of many countries to have adopted the Israel-pioneered drip irrigation system, which provides just the amount of water needed, drop by drop, to the roots of plants, thereby conserving water.

Kuwaiti paper: "Jews are the top terrorists in history"

Today's example of blatant antisemitism in Arab newspapers comes from Al Jarida in Kuwait, which headlines an article "Jews: Top Terrorists."

In case you think this is about "Zionists," the photograph should set you straight:

The article goes through history to "prove" that Jews have been the ultimate and original terrorists, going back to the times of Joshua up until today's ISIS terrorism which is of course, we are told, connected to Jews.

The article starts its proofs by quoting a Midrash that "the Book and the sword descended from Heaven entwined together." This is proof, to the author, that violence is inherent in Judaism. (The point of the midrash is that the Book is meant to conquer the Sword, or alternatively if the Jews didn't accept the Book, then the Jews will be punished with the sword.)

We then learn that the Talmud identified terrorism as a legitimate tool to get what Jews demand.

Jews are identified as anti-Roman terrorists as well. The Jews who committed suicide at Masada were anti-Roman terrorists as well, and since the legend says that they first killed the women and children before killing themselves then this is more proof of their terrorism. When the IDF sends soldiers to Masada, according to the article, it is to imbue them with this tradition of Jewish terrorism.

See? It is all so obvious!

We have lots of ideas, but we need more resources to be even more effective. Please donate today to help get the message out and to help defend Israel.

Why we can’t just get along (Vic Rosenthal)

 Vic Rosenthal's Weekly Column

This happened on Tuesday: Palestinian terrorists spilled oil on highway 443 between Jerusalem and Modi’in and threw rocks and firebombs at passing vehicles, as they do on a regular basis. The IDF responded and opened fire at what they thought were the terrorists, killing one Palestinian teenager and wounding two others. Although all the facts aren’t available as I write this, it appears that the soldiers were mistaken about their target, and the people they shot were innocent.

Palestinians are understandably enraged, but it’s also understandable that an Israeli might ask, “what do they expect?” Every day they try and sometimes succeed to kill Jews with their rocks and firebombs, their cars and knives, and sometimes their guns and explosives. Of course we are going to fight back, and mistakes happen.

But how did we get here, to the point that our peoples are killing each other?

The Arabs and their supporters will tell you “nakba, occupation, blah blah.” That isn’t true. It is a rationalization but it is not an explanation. Here is the explanation in two words:

The PLO.

In 1979, I drove with my wife and two-year old son from Jerusalem to Afula. I took route 60, through Samaria. Today I doubt that we would survive that trip, but when we got lost near Shechem (Nablus), local Arabs gave us directions to get back on the right road. They treated us like guests.

Later, during the first Lebanon war, I had a conversation with an Arab from Abu Ghosh, a town that had chosen to be loyal to Israel in 1948. What is the solution? I asked him. We need a state of our own, he said, but not run by the PLO. They are killers and they don’t care about Arabs either.

The PLO was created in 1964 by the Arab league as a club to beat Israel with. It was taken over by Yasser Arafat’s Fatah faction in 1967. Its policy has always been to ‘liberate Palestine by armed struggle’ (although Arafat claimed during the Oslo period to have changed the PLO charter, this was not actually done).

The PLO was funded and armed by the Soviet Union and carried out numerous terrorist actions against Israel during the 1970s, including the massacre of the Olympic athletes in 1972, the Ma’alot massacre in 1974, the Coastal Road massacre of 1978, and many more. The IDF invaded Lebanon in 1982 in order to eliminate the PLO, and at the end of the war had the PLO fighters and leadership trapped in Beirut. But a European/American brokered agreement allowed them to escape. French Foreign Legion troops and US Marines escorted Arafat onto a ship, and the PLO reestablished its headquarters in Tunis. Ariel Sharon later said that one of the things he most regretted was not killing Arafat when he had the chance.

Although it perpetrated a few terror attacks from Tunis (notably the Achille Lauro hijacking in 1985), the PLO became more and more irrelevant in exile. But in 1993, Israel made the greatest political mistake in its history and signed the Oslo Accords, breathing life back into the PLO.

In January 1993 the PLO was outlawed in Israel and it was even illegal for an Israeli to meet with PLO representatives. But Yossi Beilin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs under Shimon Peres, began secret negotiations with the PLO without informing the Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin. Rabin only found out about the meetings in May, and although his conception of an acceptable deal with the Palestinians was very different than that of Peres and Beilin, he had no choice but to embrace the negotiations, especially once the Americans became involved.

The Oslo accords recognized the PLO as the representative of the Palestinians, brought the execrable Arafat and his gangsters back to Israel (first to Gaza and later to Ramallah) and created the Palestinian Authority, a pseudo-government for the territories, run by the PLO.

Arafat immediately proceeded to kill or expel his enemies – including anyone who did not agree with the PLO program to destroy the Jewish state – and to turn the Palestinian Authority into a massive machine, fueled by money from the US, EU and Israel, to train future soldiers and martyrs for the Palestinian cause.

The PA did nothing for ordinary Arabs, stealing literally billions in international aid to enrich PLO big shots. It did not create the infrastructure for a future state.

The PLO has always been ideologically flexible. It was Arab nationalist while its patrons were Egypt and Syria, Marxist when it needed Soviet aid, and today it is pleased to incite Muslims to murder over the alleged plans of Israel to destroy the al-Aqsa mosque. It even pretends to be interested in building a Western-style democracy to impress the Americans.

But the one aspect of its ideology that has always been the same is its commitment to violently ‘liberating’ Palestine from the Jews, and it has turned all of its institutions to this purpose: schools and universities, mosques, media, arts, literature, sport. All of them focus on teaching the lesson that all the land from the river to the sea is ‘Palestinian’, and the Jews have no claim on any of it.

Israel does not appear on their maps, and they name public squares, schools and sports teams after ‘martyrs’ who have died killing Jews. Their TV programs for children encourage young people to die for the cause, while their adult fare repeats blood libels against Jews from the Middle Ages. Although the PLO under Arafat and now Abbas has promised since the early days of Oslo to stop incitement against Jews and Israel, it has never taken even the smallest step to do so.

The PLO created the generation that goes out every day hoping to kill, and left us no choice but to send armed soldiers against them. The PLO made the bloody world that Israelis and Palestinians are living in today.

But apparently neither side has learned the lesson of the last two decades. The Palestinians have not learned that terrorism will not make us leave, but will only cause us to take stronger and stronger measures to protect ourselves.

And the Israelis? Well, a few days ago it was revealed that Yitzhak Herzog, head of the Labor Party (I can’t bring myself to call it the ‘Zionist Union’), following in the treasonous footsteps of Yossi Beilin and Shimon Peres, carried on secret negotiations with Mahmoud Abbas, and proposed a deal in which Israel would transfer all but 4% of Judea and Samaria to the PA/PLO, divide Jerusalem, give the Arabs sovereignty on the Temple Mount, and (my favorite part) ‘fight terrorism’ with a combined force of Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians! Luckily, Herzog lost the election, and recent polls show that the Labor Party is at a historic low in voter approval.

All this is a tragedy. Jews and Arabs can live, if not together, at least in proximity. But not if the Palestinian leadership will continue to be the eliminationist PLO. And certainly not if Israel continues to support and empower the PLO, instead of crushing it for once and for all.
